The black glass border around the mosaic scene has some wear -- including several chips and dings. Card of Antique Picture buttons. Plastic Glass MOP Deer, Squirrel Boats Indian
We have inherited a button collection from Minnesota. There are over 83.000 buttons. They were started by a woman in 1867, who, as a child, began her first charm string. We understand she was 7 years old when the collection was begun. Her name was Mrs. Underleak. She exhibited her collection at the Minnesota State Fair in 1939. At that time, she had over 13,000 buttons. She and her daughter determined to have the largest collection in Minnesota, and it appears, they kicked it into full gear in the 1940's because many of the cards of buttons are dated during that decade. We are not sure when Mrs. Underleak died but her daughter died in the early 1970's and our mother purchased the whole collection as part of the daughter's estate. It is very possible that our mother added more buttons to it, but, when our mother counted the collection ... morein around 1999, she came up with the total of 83,000 buttons. We have now inherited it, and are beginning to sell it. We are not sure whether it ever was the largest collection in Minnesota. But there are several newspaper articles, with pictures, that show Mrs. Underleak surrounded by her buttons in 1939. She was in the St. Paul Paper and the Pine River Journal. We have no experience with buttons, other than using them, so we are trying to learn about them as quickly as we can. We would love to hear from you experts when we mis-categorize something. We will make every attempt to photograph our listings well, so you can determine what the buttons are, even if we can't tell you. A wonderful collection of antique and vintage black glass picture buttons. Several have lustre finishes. Half of the buttons have metal shanks indicating they are from the 1890's or so. The other half have self shanks and are thus a little newer. The images include warriors. Lizard, arrows, vase, anchor, shield, letters etc. All appear to be in very good to excellent condition. Vintage Glass Enamel Metal Brass Picture Buttons
Vintage Buttons The largest button which is the black glass one. Measures about 5/8" and the smallest which is the enameled rose one measures about 5/16" The one with the bird appears to be inlaided enamel and measures about 9/16" The little black one measures about 7/16" and appears to be made out of some type of plastic with cut glass inside. The little gold picture button measures about 7/16" as well. The brown button measures about 1/2" and is made of some type of metal with a glass interior. The last one is very pretty with an open stamped metal design and measures about 1/2" None of the buttons have stamps/marks and I am unsure of the type of metal. Card of 25 Fabulous Antique Glass and Metal Dog Picture Buttons
9" X 12" Cardboard card with 25 different antique buttons on it. There are buttons ranging in size 1/2" to 1 3/8" The largest one is in the center. All of the buttons are dogs or pictures with dogs in them. Six are glass picture buttons. Two silver colored. Three iridescent, and one black glass. There are five metal buttons with dog portraits on them. One of these has a black enamel coating and scratched in the enamel is a dog head holding a bird in his mouth. The rest of them are metal with pictures with either one or two dogs in them. These buttons are amazing and all seem to be in great condition. The black glass button is glued to the board because the shank is missing. All of the others seem to have the shanks in place and poked through the board with paperclips or wires holding them in place. Card 28 Antique Picture, Military, Jewel, Glass Buttons Helen Moody Tennis star
Listing 73. This is a card of 28 buttons. Of all sorts, beautiful sparkly ones, military, Southern Pacific, Big Silver colored picture button, Celluloid, brass, glass, and more. Large silver button is about 1 1/2 inches in diameter. The interesting thing about these buttons besides how pretty they are is that a woman by the name of Helen Moody, Santa Monica, California, gave them to Mrs. Underleak in 1939. There is a small news article taped on the back about Helen Willis Moody, tennis star, in 1937, winning a doubles tournament with Baron Gottfried Von Cramm, Most of the Underleak collection was completed before and during the early years of the Second World war, so most of the collection would have come before 1941. These buttons have been boxed up for 60 to 75 years. They were used and displayed prior to being put away. Please see pictures ... moreto determine the condition. They were started by a woman in 1867, who, as a child, began her first charm string. We understand she was 7 years old when the collection was begun. Her name was Mrs. Anna Underleak. She exhibited her collection at the Minnesota State Fair in 1939. At that time, she had close to 40,000 buttons. She and her daughter determined to have the largest collection in Minnesota, and it appears, they kicked it into full gear in the late 30's early 1940's because many of the cards of buttons are dated during that time. We are not sure when Mrs. Underleak died but her daughter died in the early 1970's and our mother purchased the whole collection as part of the daughter's estate. When our mother counted the collection in around 1999-2000, she came up with the total of 83,000 buttons. We have now inherited it, and are beginning to sell it. Waterfall, rocky hills, birds, trees, and smoke coming from the mill's chimney. How do they get all that detail into a little button! The scene is impressed into the center of each button. The frames are square with round edges. The bigger button has a small. Small chip on the lower right side of the frame, while the other button has a tiny one on the right side on the outside rim. Buttons measure 7/8" and 5/8" Both buttons are backmarked: Patd Dec 28th 1880. Which is in reference to the metal u-shaped loop and plate shank. Antique Victorian Button Collection, Jet Black Glass Buttons Picture, Mourning
This is a collection of Victorian jet black buttons that a lady put on a tree to give her sister as a present 44 years ago. I doubt you'll ever see another like it. unless she had more than one sister. It is a certainly a one-of-a-kind piece. The picture. Surrounded by a black satin ribbon, is about 7 1/2 x 10: and the frame is 11 x 13 inches. But. It's the buttons that are the neat thing. They are genuine Victorian buttons from the 1800s. There are 30 unique antique jet black buttons, each different. All are fancy, some having an aesthetic appearance with leaves, etc. I've looked closely, and see no two that are exactly alike. All look perfect. Except for one that showed up in a picture as having a brown spot on it. I didn't see it with my naked eye. If you would want the picture. There are mostly metal buttons, some with pictures, some with cut steels, and others just very unusual. There are a few glass buttons and some Mother-of-Pearl with set cut steels and carved. Most of the buttons have the loop shank(see photo of backs) The largest button is the glass one at the top and that is 1 1/4" in diameter(and has a chip on the edge) The majority of the rest of the buttons are in good condition. The metal loop shanks on a lot of them are bent but could, easily, be bent right. Some have matches but most do not.
