Early Gutta Percha Hard Rubber Flower Button - Goodyear Patent 1851
Here we have a old vintage gutta percha or hard rubber flower button. It is marked on the back N. R. Co. Goodyear Pat. May 6 1851. It is 1 inch in diameter. Obviously one knows that Mr. Goodyear was involved in experimenting and coming up with new products and materials. He was a real thinker! His invention or improvement to gutta percha and hard rubber spawned an entire new production of nearly every possible everyday item. Here is an example this button. It is fine condition with no chips or cracks or marks. The markings on the back are very visible and ledgible. The center post on back is very strong and attached. It is a nice flower design and a nice addition to your collection any questions please ask and thanks for looking.

Very Rare Goodyear IRC Co.1851 Button (India Rubber Company)
This button is from the India Rubber Co. using the Goodyear patent. It is marked IRC Co. Goodyear, 1851, Collectors call hard rubber buttons"Goodyear buttons" Charles Goodyear held the patent but did not make any buttons. A relative of Charles Goodyear did produce pewter metal buttons much earlier than rubber buttons made an appearance. His name was Amasa Goodyear. Charles Goodyear's vulcanization patent expired in 1865. However. The Goodyear hard rubber patent of May 6, 1851(covering buttons, combs, etc. was extended(by Nelson Goodyear) in 1865 and did not expire until May 6, 1872. After the patent expired in 1872. The largest manufacturers still put their names on items they made. Many later Novelty Rubber Co. buttons are marked with only"Novelty Rubber Co. Additionally. The India Rubber Comb Co. IRC Co. used their name ... morealong with"Goodyear 1851" as a trademark and their successor, The American Hard Rubber Co. filed this as an official trademark in 1906 and used it at least through 1917.

Up for auction is a very nice selection of five early hard rubber buttons. Made by GOODYEAR. All five have GOODYEAR backmarks; and four of the five have patent dates(all of 1851) HOWEVER the secret to dating these hard rubber buttons is the company that made them. Ignore the 1851 patent date. Many sellers on Ebay will only see the 1851 patent and try sell them as 1850s buttons or as potential"Civil War" era relics.If you see something on the back that says N.R.CO; then that means you are looking at an early rubber button made by the NOVELTY RUBBER COMPANY; which operated only 1855-1870. So indeed, at least those ones could have come from the American Civil War era. However there are others you will find marked with"I.R.C. CO" which stands for the INDIA RUBBER COMPANY that was in business only during the 1880s- 1890s.Hope ... morethis information helps. Now for my buttons. BUTTON IN UPPER LEFT CORNER OF PHOTOS; Has a neat raised boss/ disc design. It has a pair of sewing holes in center. The backmark says; N. Goodyear's P=T. 1851. NR CO" It is apx 1 inch in diameter(apx 25 mm) Date therefore on this button is 1855-1870. BUTTON IN UPPER RIGHT CORNER; Plain. With four sewing holes in center. The backmark says; Goodyear. 1851. IRC CO. It is apx 22 mm(just under one inch in diameter) Date would be from 1880s-1890s. BUTTON IN CENTER; Has very tiny lines that pass across its body. As decoration. It has a self-shank back. The backmark says; Goodyear. 1851. IRC CO" The date for this button would therefore be 1880s-1890s. This is a large, splendid button that measures apx 37mm in diameter(That is just under 1 1/2 inches) BUTTON IN LOWER LEFT; The design is an interlinked chain of small circles around the edge. There are some sets of graduating sizes, pairs, mother/daughters and singles. There are plain buttons, designs, imitation fabric, ink wells and more. One button is an unusual two tone and there is a large 1 3/4" top row, center) There seems to be a true brown(same color brown on front and back) but we are not experts. Please see the photos. Four RUBBER BUTTONS. Possibly military. The smallest 1/2" button has a slightly domed center engraved with a flower& a raised ring around it; the shank is a brass loop. The 9/16" button has a raised ring around it's two sew-through holes& edge. The largest 13/16" button has an indented center with two holes, and raised rings from this center to the edge. These three buttons are marked in raised lettering"Goodyear's P=, N.R.C0. The largest button of these three also has a date of"1851" One button is 7/8" diameter with edged knob on the back and the numbers"151-400" on the front(is this a button?
