Museum Owned Lot Charmstring of 238 19th Century Antique Victorian Buttons
This 3' x 1' display contains 238 antique buttons of all types- enamel- glass- metal- mirror backs- shell- mother of pearl and abalone- pictorials and more. And was lovingly and painstakingly put together by volunteer Hazel Hadley for the Milton Hershey Story Museum in Hershey, PA. It is marked as such on the reverse. The examples on it are among the best of the best. Not all appear in close-up. As I only get twelve photos. It was on display at the museum for several decades. Then put in storage for about 15 years. I purchased it at auction about 2-years ago and was awaiting the paperwork/cataloguing of it from the museum, but it does not appear to be forthcoming. These gorgeous brass findings had been sitting in their warehouse for years before being bought. They are vintage. And yet they are unused. Most of the findings are from the 1940's and 1950's. One pink and one cranberry and the third is a 5/16" turquoise ball. All three have tiny little rosebuds in the glass. They are all in very good condition. Listing 51. 30 Antique Tiny and diminutive Glass. China,MOP Swirlback, Paperweight, Pairs. Largest, about 3/8 inch in diameter. Swirlbacks, 1 that is sort of a translucent beige with black and yellow decoration on the top, shot with thin gold lines. The other is purple gray, marbled with lighter lines.Paperweight is 1/4 inch in diameter with blue background, pink rose, and leaves under glass. Also, there is a button, bead that looks like jade. Please check out pictures carefully. Most of the Underleak collection was completed before and during the early years of the Second World war, so most of the collection would have come before 1941. These buttons have been boxed up for 60 to 75 years. They were used and displayed prior to being put away. Please see pictures to determine the condition. They were started by a woman in 1867, who, as a child, began her first charm string. We understand she was 7 years old when the collection was begun. Her name was Mrs. Anna Underleak. She exhibited her collection at the Minnesota State Fair in 1939. At that time, she had close to 40,000 buttons. She and her daughter determined to have the largest collection in Minnesota, and it appears, they kicked it into full gear in the 1940's because many of the cards of buttons are dated during that decade. We are not sure when Mrs. Underleak died but her daughter died in the early 1970's and our mother purchased the whole collection as part of the daughter's estate. When our mother counted the collection in around 1999-2000, she came up with the total of 83,000 buttons. We have now inherited it, and are beginning to sell it. We are not sure whether it ever was the largest collection in Minnesota. But there are several newspaper articles, with pictures, that show Mrs. Underleak surrounded by her buttons in 1939. Listing 49. 2 Neat buttons with a horse's head over a fence. The design appears to be brass over another metal. Just about 5/8 inch in diameter. Backmark is Solidaire Paris. Plus a few numbers and letters that Begin with a B. Even magnified I couldn't be sure what they said. It also says Paris AP& C. I took pictures with flash and without. These very small buttons are just as I got them. One is blown glass with a perl like color inside. Twelve are cleare faceted beads. 13 are black glass, 12 are round metal, 2 are metal with a green pantina, and 1 is a faceted black iridescent bead(not a button) They are strung on a cotton cord. LOT OF 2 ANTIQUE CHARMSTRING GLASS BUTTONS. THESE ARE STUNNING! BOTH BUTTONS HAVE EMBEDDED FOIL. THE WHITE CONE SHAPED BUTTON MEASURES A HAIR OVER 3/8 INCHES ACROSS. IT HAS A SWIRLED BACK WITH AN INSERTED METAL SHANK. THE WHITE GLASS TIP IS BACKED WITH SILVER FOIL WHICH REALLY CATCHES THE LIGHT. THE LEMON YELLOW BAQLL SHAPED GLASS BUTTON MEASURE APPROX. 7/16 INCHES ACROSS. IT HAS SCREEN DESIGN SOIL IN THE BASE PAPERWEIGHT STYLE. THERE ARE SOME TINY BUBBLES WITHIN THE GLASS.
