Antique Buttons- Smoked Pearl, Hand Carved MoP~ Jet? Onyx? Late 1700's?
Set of 3 mother of pearl antique buttons. The mother of pearl is a smoked pearl and is hand-carved. The center is a metal setting with black jet or onyx cushion cut stones. Which are abraided. Two of the buttons are 1/2 inch and the center button measures 1 inch. The only examples I find similar to these are dated in the 1700's from a museum database, these are similar to one's dated around 1775- 1785. The metal backs are intact, but somewhat bent flat. Antique Set of 5 Buttons Japanese Meiji Hand Carved Cow Bone Macaque Monkey
This is a quick listing for something completely different. I found these at an Estate Sale a few years ago. I bought them because they were so cute and unusual and I have a habit of Impulse buying. It does get me in to trouble at times. I never did find any use for these so I'm offering them to someone who might appreciate the delicate detail and quality of work. The Buttons are probably from the turn of the century during the Japanese Meiji period. They are hand carved figural heads of Macaque Monkeys. During my research for these I did find a small thread box that had the exact same depiction of the Monkeys. Same coloring just a little larger and probably the same artist. I did include photos of the size scale and they measure about 15/16" They are a little different in sizes but that might be due to the fact they are of hand ... morecarved. I also did the Hot Pin test to confirm that they are not Plastic but Bone probably Cow Bone. This selection of buttons have 3 each left and 2 each right profiles with some of the coloring still vivid. Please study the photos carefully and ask any and all questions before placing a bid. 15 Antique Hand Carved Wood Buttons, Bird, Indian Chief, Different Woods Pre1935
Listing 123 A. 15 Wooden Buttons. They are cut or carved into various shapes. Each one is from a different type of tree or bush or cactus. There are two spots with missing buttons. Largest button is 1 3/4 inches across. Cholla. Suguara, Iron wood, Cotton Wood, Grease Wood. Etc. Birds, Insects, Indian Chief, 4 leaf clover, etc. No, information about who made them. Most of the Underleak collection was completed before and during the early years of the Second World war. So most of the collection would have come before 1941. These buttons have been boxed up for 60 to 75 years. They were used and displayed prior to being put away. Please see pictures to determine the condition. Ask questions or ask for more pictures if you want to see an additional views. We have inherited a button collection from Minnesota. We have counted over 70.000 buttons ... moreso far. They were started by a woman in 1867, who, as a child, began her first charm string. We understand she was 7 years old when the collection was begun. Her name was Mrs. Anna Underleak. She exhibited her collection at the Minnesota State Fair in 1939. At that time, she had close to 40,000 buttons. She and her daughter determined to have the largest collection in Minnesota, and it appears, they kicked it into full gear in the late 30's early 1940's because many of the cards of buttons are dated during that time. We are not sure when Mrs. Underleak died but her daughter died in the early 1970's and our mother purchased the whole collection as part of the daughter's estate. When our mother counted the collection in around 1999-2000, she came up with the total of 83,000 buttons. We have now inherited it, and are beginning to sell it. We are not sure whether it ever was the largest collection in Minnesota. But there are several newspaper articles, with pictures, that show Mrs. Underleak surrounded by her buttons in 1939. She was in the St. Paul Paper and the Pine River Journal. We have no experience with buttons, other than using them, so we are trying to learn

Another item from my Special Treasures display case. These outstanding hand-carved buttons are made of staghorn rosette. From the section of the horn where it connects to the skull. They were often used on the German leather Lederhosen. The delicate carving depicts two bucks facing each other. A beautiful collectible. These are rarely found. RARE ANTIQUE HAND-CARVED ABALONE SHELL BUTTONS LOVELY 6 FEATHERS 1 LARGE OVAL
This fabulous group of 7 unique and matched antique abalone buttons came from the estate of a wealthy Hartford. Connecticut family. They were from a pair of riding jodhpurs worn in the early 1900s. The smallest of the hand-carved feathers is about 1-1/2" in length and the largest is about 2" long. They have two small holes at the top(see photos) The oval button is 1-5/8" x 1-1/8 and has two holes in the middle(see photos) They are all in very good condition particularly considering their age.
