2 Antique Brass? Copper Light Picture type buttons Japan Mt. Fuji and Robed Man
We have inherited a button collection from Minnesota. There are over 83.000 buttons. They were started by a woman in 1867, who, as a child, began her first charm string. We understand she was 7 years old when the collection was begun. Her name was Mrs. Underleak. She exhibited her collection at the Minnesota State Fair in 1939. At that time, she had over 13,000 buttons. She and her daughter determined to have the largest collection in Minnesota, and it appears, they kicked it into full gear in the 1940's because many of the cards of buttons are dated during that decade. We are not sure when Mrs. Underleak died but her daughter died in the early 1970's and our mother purchased the whole collection as part of the daughter's estate. It is very possible that our mother added more buttons to it, but, when our mother counted the collection ... morein around 1999, she came up with the total of 83,000 buttons. We have now inherited it, and are beginning to sell it. We are not sure whether it ever was the largest collection in Minnesota. But there are several newspaper articles, with pictures, that show Mrs. Underleak surrounded by her buttons in 1939. She was in the St. Paul Paper and the Pine River Journal. We have no experience with buttons, other than using them, so we are trying to learn about them as quickly as we can. We would love to hear from you experts when we mis-categorize something. Up for sale is a beautiful 2 pc metal picture button set or coat Latch Buttons with a stamped Face of what I think is Queen Victoria Of England? I may be wrong and if I am please email me so I can update my information. This set is very old and is either bronze or brass but it looks like bronze? They measure 2 3/4" wide when hooked together. The one with the hoop measures 1 1/4" wide the other side with the hook measures 1 1/2" wide. The round part is about 1.1" wide or just over 1" wide. these have slight wear like oxidation and one round attaching hoop on the back of one is bent, not sure if it was made this way but they look great and can be used now as is. these are the real deal and vintage.
