We continue offering items from a consignment that have been in a Southwestern New Hampshire family for years. As we have now discovered, back into the first half of the 19th century. My consignor explains; To the best of my knowledge my family were primarily farmers in Dublin. NH. There were several generations living on the farms at the same time. Farm income was supplemented by various means. Hiriam Carey was the Dublin carriage driver for Mark Twain and my Grandmother was a seamstress who also made costumes for the likes of Amelia Earhart and Joseph Linden Smith during their stays in Dublin. Though there may not have been a lot of money to purchase luxuries' or non essential items sometimes the family was given small things for either payment or in appreciation. My mother and grandmother were founders of a local button club and since ... moremy grandmother was a seamstress who made costumes for the Dublin Art Colony plays many of their special collected buttons were remnants of other peoples' purchases. Here we have a card approx. 9 3/4" X 12 1/2" with 10 buttons ranging from 3/8" to 1 1/4" across. An interesting mix of buttons. 8 with metal shanks, 1 four hole and 1 two hole These buttons are in good condition with a hairline crack that runs through ¾ of the top shell on the third down on right and a bit of rust on same button. And take my time designing just the right piece. In some of my creations I also use vintage jewelry parts. Stampings and findings. Again, nothing modern is used. Several pieces have 14K gold or sterling silver chains. A good portion of my vintage brass findings were obtained from a woman who purchased them years and years ago from a vintage costume jewelry manufacturer who had gone out of business. These gorgeous brass findings had been sitting in their warehouse for years before being bought. They are vintage. And yet they are unused. Most of the findings are from the 1940's and 1950's. A very nice set of 5 Victorian Metal buttons. Stamped tinted metal in a copper color of a foliate or leaf pattern on one side. On the other are stamped imitation cut steels over a mirror back. Classed as a twinkle button by collectors. Each button measures just a nudge over 1/2" in diameter. The backs have a wire loop shank and are Japanned(painted black) While the mirror back was very difficult to photograph it is strongly visible in hand. Not always easy to find matching sets. Most of the buttons have the loop shank(see photo of backs) The largest button is the glass one at the top and that is 1 1/4" in diameter(and has a chip on the edge) The majority of the rest of the buttons are in good condition. The metal loop shanks on a lot of them are bent but could, easily, be bent right. Some have matches but most do not.
