Antique Asian Red Painted Kitchen Cabinet or Bedroom Dresser c. 19th Century
Please note. We have a very large collection of additional images of this piece available for your enjoyment below. Description: This listing is for a Asian Red Low Cabinet with Three Drawers over Two Doors. Probably Chinese circa the late 19th to early 20th Century. It features what appears to be a solid Elm frame using traditional construction throughout, utilizing full mortise and tenon construction throughout the entire cabinet. It has a glowing red lacquer finish in outstanding condition, already forming a nice patina throughout. It does not appear to be an original finish, with some flaking in corners- likewise, a stain has been added to drawer secondary woods and an ebonized finish to the back of the chest, all of which help preserve the aging process. Each drawer is constructed with hand cut dovetails at the front and a through-tenon ... moremortise joint at the back. The underside of each drawer still bear evident rought straight saw marks from being cut by hand into a thin drawer bottom. Then being chamfered by hand along the edges to rabbet into the drawer frame sides. The hardware on each drawer is replaced. Two doors swing open to reveal a single shelf space. Also with replaced hardware. The hinges are developed to remain invisible from the outside, using what is probably a dowel on the top and bottom of the inside of the door to tenon into the cabinet, allowing the door to swing without revealing the mechanism. Over time, what probably was a very smooth mechanism is now a little tricky- while it swings easily and closes easily, it is not a smooth function. This is a gorgeous cabinet. Working flawlessly with any modern decor or with any collection of Asian antiques. In excellent condition throughout and timeless hand craftsmanship in every aspect of the chest, this will last you and your family several lifetimes. Note. Offered here is a gorgeous Antique Highly Carved Oak Brittany Marriage Cabinet circa 19th Century. This French piece is fantastic! An absolutely stunning corner vitrine. We are pleased to bring this piece back to the market. You are looking at a diminutive flemish art burnt wood corner cabinet. This is a 2 tier velvet lined case with a glass shelf and a glass front door. It has an A shaped frame and an architectural boxed gallery. There is a lower tier shelf as well. The cabinet stands on three legs that are covered and carved with burnt wood decorations that include: winged angels. Putty with garlands, griffins and lilies of the field. This piece measures 62.5" x 19" x 15" It is signed R.A. Weed and dated 1898. This piece does have decorative wear and imperfections including losses to the finish. She proudly displayed this cupboard in her lovely farmhouse in the country. This is piece has beveled doors with evidence of worm holes. Square nails were used in the construction. It even has a till where someone could hide his or her precious valuables. It's in well worn condition. I'm unsure of the wood type, it might be butternut. And a mirro red hinged lockable door below. W hich has an intricate fretwork border. Internally there are two short top drawers and f o ur large draw ers(some with partit ioned co m partments) Where the lower drawer contains a removable hinged writing slope with orig inal valour lining. See photos 6, 7& 8. The top moulding at the top reveals a s mall secret drawer. See photo 4. The drawers have litt le bone knobs which differ very slightly in size. Please take time to study the photographs to gain an appreciation of this unusual and very col lectable cabinet. The rosewood grain and colour looks rich in real life. Flash photo graphs do not do this cabinet ... morejustice. I believe this cabinet is all original including the brass hinges and lock which is in working order with replacement key provided. The con dition of th is very unusual and rare piece is quite exceptional considering the age with no major damage. Cracking, warping or restoration work, I bel ieve that it has not been touched(repaired/ items replaced) since the day it was made. Up for sale is a late 19th Century Jumu Natural Elmwood Chinese Tapered Cabinet. It's dimensions are: H 72" W 37 1/2" D 22" It is in very good condition. It was purchased by me in 1994. It is constructed according to traditional Jumu furniture techniques. The doors are in excellent condition with brass fittings and a brass pin for closure. At a time when mass production and reproduction defined the furniture industry, as the Victorian age enjoyed machined and factory processes in most aspects of the business, the Aesthetic Movement was a distinct rejection of the homogenized industry. Seeking to bring art back to the furnishings, works of the Aesthetic Movement are characterized by intricate inlays, complex veneer work, reinterpretations of 17th and 18th Century styles- particularly Chinese Gothic and Chippendale. This is a great old stepback cabinet from the Appalachia area West Virginia it has a great old patina I think this is the original finish that someone put a coat or 2 of varnish over some years ago! Square nail construction! The hinge pockets for the doors were a lot worn out as often is the case with cabinets of this age! The only way I could secure the doors without changing hinge location was by attaching with long screws the hinges are period appropriate but not original! The hardware was replaced with other period hardware. It has repairs that were made in the 19th century and appropriate to the time. I had a craftsman"putty" the glass in the manner that it was done in the 19th century- I believe the glass to be original- The wood that fit into the shelves is warped. I have all of the glass that was bought to display books or dishes and electrified the upper case.

A piece that is more aimed at the decorator over the collector, being at least somewhat adjusted with 19th century elements, it is a very convenient form with fine proportions. Not being overwhelming in any way, the highly appropriate depth and form work to repress the natural glamor of the form. Years of enjoyment in a bright room have mellowed the mahogany into a nearly cognac tone, the warm brown-red of the grains perfectly complimented by the naturalistic burlap backing inside of the glass cabinet- ... morenoteworthy and of great charm is the original pane of glass still retained in the door; the light rippled surface of hand blown glass is unmatched by modern craftsmanship and adds immeasurably to the nostalgia of these pieces. Mounted with medium-fine cast gilt bronze embellishments of neoclassical influence. There is a refinement about the overall form that is very striking. The construction is true to the period, the backboards chamfered along their edges to rest in the mitered stiles. While the top is lacking shelves, the"notched" system for the shelves runs along either side to readily accept new glass or wood shelves if you choose to have some crafted.
