American Pine Jelly Cupboard. Pennsylvania Probably Lehigh Valley or Lancaster County. C. 1820-40 Item# 130102WPP16 This is a simply gorgeous Early American Pennsylvania Pine Jelly Cupboard crafted during the second quarter of the 19th Century. While a good quantity cabinets and cupboards of the period survive. This piece is characterized by the best of Pennsylvania craftsmanship. Featuring a single solid board of pine on the top, dovetailed along the edges with exposed joints to the sides of the case, the molding around the top is of unusually good quality. Tightly carved and pinned to the case at equal intervals, it projects over the overall square form embellished with multiple layers of molding and tight incised scratched-beading. The triple-paneled door is a work of art. Each panel deeply chamfered on the interior and set into rabbet ... morecuts in the frame. The entire frame of the door features pegged through-tenon-mortise construction, allowing the wood to easily expand and contract while maintaining control over the structure; the door swings freely on original forged iron hinges. The lock is absent and a later bracket was installed on the door to assist in keeping the cabinet closed, the round wooden knob above the keyhole likely also an addition. The sides of the case are solid planks of pine from top to bottom. The outermost backboards finished on the edges to become part of the case sides, also continuing down into full rear feet. The backboards run vertical to the case, each being tacked with neat even rows of large square forged iron nails. The interior of the case is a somewhat graduated shelved space, the full length solid planks creating outstanding depth to the cupboard. This form of cupboard is incredibly utilitarian in any home of matching decor. Easily utilized in any room: a display cabinet in the living room, a very easily accessibly chest of drawers in the bedroom, a linens and towel cabinet in the guest bedroom or dressing room and as a cupboard for the fine china in the dining room. Great looking Grain Painted Hanging Meat/Pie Safe-Primitive cupboard,cabinet
This hanging meat safe is a great primitive and can be either hung up as it was originally used or free standing as you see it. Years ago meat was stored in a cool basement but was hung high to keep out animals. This one is grain painted in a gold or light oak looking finish. There is wear to the paint since it is so old. There are also some stains to the top surface. It is constructed of pine with screen on 2 sides and the single door. The tabs at the top have holes for threading a pipe through for hanging. This is an Early Handmade Cherry Wood Pie Safe with all Twelve Original Tins Circa 1800s. Pie safes and jelly cupboards were pieces of furniture designed to be utilitarian. They were used not only for pies but also for breads. Jellies and jams, and baked goods. They are of Germanic influence which started out in Pennsylvania. Then worked their way into the valleys of Virginia, Shenandoah, and into the Midwest as in Ohio. Indiana. And Illinois. The earliest piece was the jelly cupboard or preserve or jam cupboard. As it was named in various parts of the country. It usually had one or two doors and several shelves. It was designed to store preserved food along with filled crocks of food. Pie safes were made ten to twenty years later. They were made to keep mice and flies away from baked goods but still provide ventilation to prevent mold and ... morespoilage. There are various different sizes. But traditionally one is used to seeing punched tins in the front with a variety of designs, sometimes three punched tins on both sides. Pine and poplar were common, but it is not unusual to find pie safes made of prized Cherry and Walnut Wood. It all depended on the locality and the availability of the type of wood. Pennsylvania cupboards made by country cabinetmakers were usually five feet high. Three feet wide with high legs and two doors. This Antique 12 Tin Pie Safe is Handmade of Cherry wood with the top being two board construction. The Cherry Wood Pie Safe has the original twelve punched tins. The Wide and Large Tins have a Punched Double Sunflower Wreath design. This is a very special. Early, pie safe from North carolina. Pie safe has punched tin screens on the sides and on the doors. Unique in size, pie safe measures 37" wide 17" deep 50 1/2" high. This piece is in good condition for its age and stands very sturdy. The top has two metal pieces covering up holes in the top where the knotted wood must have fallen out. This is wire mesh or screen that looks like bright copper but it could be a blend of copper. Brass or bronze but I'm not sure. It appears to be stiffer or harder than pure copper so I'm thinking it's probably a blend but I'm not sure. I purchased this from a woman in Hanover. Pennsylvania, which is about 30 miles from my location. I am not an expert on pie safes, so I had a local"expert" tell me some things about this piece. He informed me that the base is not original, the mesh on the front has been replaced(frame inside and out where the mesh is, is not original) He also stated that the"paint" is probably milk with some sort of dye, like mustard seed or dandelions. Not sure of the type of wood.probably oak. He also believed ... morethis dated around 1850, due to not having the tin/copper punch front and the nails used. There are some newer nails on the top, where the piece is missing. It looks as if someone used these to refasten the missing piece. The woman from whom I purchased this, could not find the missing piece. Structurally, the piece is decent with some gaps in the wood as seen in the pics. Lots of character, like the mice holes on the front and on the back at the base. It stands almost 4' high, 30" wide and 16.75" deep. The hinges on the door are loose and will need to be tightened. I like to describe what I see"wrong" with items, this way there is no surprises when your purchase arrives. This is a very nice antique piece. A wonderful example of New England charm. THIS IS NOT A REMAKE FROM RECLAIMED WOOD. I have had this cabinet for about 30 years. It is from Vermont. I do not know its exact age. But it has to be from early 1900's at least. Small cabinet. More likely for jelly than a pie. The front door is made of punched tin. The rest of the cabinet is wood. Inside are shelves that are fixed. Outer measurements are 16 1/8" wide by 16 1/4" tall by 8 1/2" deep. Inside is 11 1/2" wide by 13" tall by 6 1/2" deep. Shelves have varied space in height.

This antique cabinet was used as a kitchen cabinet to store food. This cabinet has the original wire mesh or screen on the upper portion that would have kept food safe. While allowing air to circulate and keep it fresh. The original painted surface on the cabinet is very vibrant. A combination of combing and sponging was done in what appears to be a mustard over pumpkin. Fabulous patina. This has a blind dovetailed one board construction. hand cut dovetailing at the base of the cabinet and constructed with square nails. Mortise and tenon joints. Original barrel hinges. See photos. Very interesting primitive punched tin cabinet. It has a wonderful colonial blue/gray paint I am not sure of its age but I would say before 1930 it has an identifying stamp embossed on the tin which reads PENNTREATY it has the Pennsylvania Keystone Mark as well and says copper steel. It looks like this possibly was a cabinet that originally hung from the ceiling It has typical age wear and dings you would expect of a cabinet that was utilitarian. Up for sale is anther great find from our grandparents 200 year old Indiana Farm Estate. We would love to keep this great piece. But need to make room for the next generations, so it is time for it to find a new home. This piece(not sure if it is considered a pie safe or china cabinet) belonged to our great grandparents, and may have been in the family longer, but we have photos of it in their farm house from the very early 1900's. I tried to upload some of these photos, but due to their age and point of deterioration, was unable to. This cabinet can be moved in two pieces. The piece is in amazing condition for its age. You are bidding on a very nice antiques walnut pie-safe with very early heart and star punched tin in the sides. This is what would be called a combination pie and jelly cupboard and it is from the early 1800's and was found in eastern Ohio. The cupboard stands 69" tall. 48" wide and 16" deep and has a rare galley around its top, one tin with a hole and the piece has been refinished to natural walnut. Please feel free to ask questions or for more pictures. This is pick up in Kankakee, Illinois, or the buyer can make arrangments for delivery and the cupboard is also for sale locally.
