When we found it the bibliotheque was used as a buffet and for this transformation ... morea mirror was added to the back of the top section and the wooden shelves were replaced with two glass shelves. I am selling it as found. With one key, two glass shelves for the top section which are not original to this item, and one wooden shelf for the bottom section. The only flaws being a few scratches, and nicks, as shown in pictures. Otherwise there is absolutely no damage or breaks or cracks, and all hardware is original brass, that definitely needs to be polished to look brass again, incredible for a piece from 1885. The description as read on an 1980 appraisal of actual value,NOT INSURANCE, reads as follows. Buffet, oak, American, circa 1850s-80s, 92"wide, 36"high, 19"deep, brass hardware, 5 top drawers, pretty large some with dividers for silverware, etc. and 5 doors. I do have an appraisal for this from 25 years ago. The original key is also included. As all the drawers and cabinets have key holes to be locked. Carved and paneled cabinet doors, a candle shelf with ornate bracket supports, fluted accents and decorative bail and drop pulls. The mirror for this piece has been replaced with a new bevelled edge mirror. There are two drawers and two cabinet doors. This piece would make a lovely addition to any dining room. Condition: The lock hardware is missing from the inside of the cabinet doors The shelf is missing from the left side cabinet but the supports are intact so it would be fairly simple to return a shelf to that side if desired. There is a separation on the left side of the cabinet. The bottom of the left drawer has a separation also. The mirror is new as mentioned in the description above. The surface of the piece has age appropriate wear(circa 1890) and a separation running the full length of the piece that is most likely a seam since it is very straight and consistent. The work surface is trimmed with well-preserved carved roping design and has a warm patina finish. All drawers are tongue and groove construction and operate in fine working order. One drawer is sectioned for silverware. The center cupboard features a middle shelf and voluminous storage. There is some veneer loss on the front of one drawer. Other veneer has mild aging/deterioration. Surface has a non-structural crack. It was filled/repaired at one time. Another vertical crack exists along the side and has been similarly repaired.
