This fine desk measures 45 1/2 inches in height to the top of the gallery at the back.Height to the top at the front measures 46 inches, with a total width of 48 inches, total depth of 26 inches and this desk weighs approximately 200 lbs. The pull out writing surface measures 41 inches wide by 21 inches deep and height from the floor to the top of the writing surface measures 30 inches. The knee hole height of the desk portion measures 25 1/4 inches and knee-hole width measures 18 3/4 inches. The cylinder portion of this desk raises and lowers very smoothly and has a large brass lock mechanism on the bottom which is marked: Indianapolis Cab. Co Pat. The lock is intact but we do not have the key. The inner desk portion is beautiful maple with a multitude of various sizes of storage drawers and cubbies.The old green felt on the pull out writing surface appears original and does show some wear and some spots. The left offers a stack of four storage drawers with period dove-tailed ends and the original pulls. To the right another drawer is found with a storage cabinet below. The lock is missing from the cabinet door. As you can see in the pictures this desk could easily be in the center of a room for it is as lovely on the back as the front and is finished beautifully all the way around. This Victorian Eastlake cylinder roll desk circa 1880 is in fabulous antique condition. French Louis XVI Style Bonheur Du Jour Antique Writing Desk France c. 1890-1910. Mahogany Veneers with Brass Stringer Inlay Cylindrical Top Desk with Mechanical Movement Item# 120012OWP03 This is a simply gorgeous French Louis XVI style Bonheur Du Jour Cylinder Top Antique Desk. A wonderful visual accomplishment. This desk revives the Napoleonic tastes of the late 18th Century, in every way capturing the Neoclassical taste for clean lines and stoic structure juxtaposed with lavish ornamentation. Mounted with precisely executed brass and bronze hardware and embellishments, the desk is mutually reserved and royal. Crafted almost entirely by hand, this is a stunning and highly complex work, using gorgeous mahogany veneers to cover all visible surfaces of the desk. The cylinder top has an interesting mechanism whereby the opening of the lower ... moredrawer opens the roll top. Once the cylinder top is opened. The desk lid is accessible, now easily opened to lay supported on the open drawer- this reveals an original tooled black and gilt leather writing surface, three small hand dovetailed drawers, a pen rest flanked by inkwell cubbies and a storage space inside. Resting over that are three larger drawers. Again each hand dovetailed with solid mahogany secondary woods, the bottom of each drawer chamfered along the sides to rabbet into the frame and nailed at the back with tiny nails. A curious inscription on the pine beneath the middle top drawer is a possible attribution to it's maker, an upside-down V with an S scrolled inside- the same inscription appears in very large proportions on the backboard as viewed by removing the top drawers and peering back into the antique french desk. The interior is inscrutable unfortunately. Much of it being locked up with the dust boards, roll top and lower drawer that is not removable. Each drawer is framed in brass tubular molding around the gilt bronze drawer hardware. The top is a piece of mottled red and cream marble. Fantastic Victorian era cylinder top desk. Made from oak with pine secondary woods. Panelled back and sides. The large upper cabinet has flexible. Movable shelves and period glass doors. It rests atop a cylinder or roll top desk area with a small drawer and several pigeon holes. The writing surface is covered in black felt and pulls out to provide a larger area. There is a large overhanging drawer as well as two smaller drawers and a cabinet below, for even more storage. All of the drawers have brass pulls and escutcheons and dovetail joints. The lower area is spoon carved in a charming leaf pattern. This piece most likely dates from the late 1800's. This piece is in good condition. This intricately detailed piece has definite Eastlake influences including a decorative grid pattern that borders the panelled sides and back and elaborate scroll decoration below the writing surface. Cylinder top conceals pigeon holes and a pull-out writing surface covered in emerald green felt. Brass hinges. Diamond-shaped escutcheons and rosette-mounted bail handle drawer pulls. One long shallow top drawers as well as three half-size drawers and a generous cabinet space. Dowel construction throughout including the drawers, top and back. The locking mechanisms in the drawers have two patent dates- April, 1875 and August, 1882. No maker's marks. Over all this piece is in very good condition. Especially considering its age. These desks are supposedly rare and can be quite expensive. Unable to locate maker's marks. But it looks as though it could have been made by Edwards& Roberts, an English woodworking firm established in the 1840's and active throughout the 1850's as furniture and cabinet makers and retailers of fine furniture. 1stdibs has a similar desk listed at $6800. This is an older desk so it has some nicks, chips, and older repairs but is in good condition for being over 100 years old(it is likely from the 1850's, but I will leave dating of the piece to the purchaser as I am not an expert in this type of furniture) The cylinder works well, the desk surface pulls out easily, and the drawers work well. It is a beautiful piece of furniture. It also breaks down into 3 pieces for transport. The top lifts off from the two base, drawer ... moreportions. Satinwood, tulipwood, mahoghany and other rare exotic woods in painstaking inlay. Measures 18 3/8" D x 29 5/8" W x 39 1/2" H. Surface features a basket weave motif with 1”x 1” squares on diagonal. Central medallion contains over 100 insets alone; depicts musical instruments from Renaissance(lute, drum, clarinet, flute and pipes) with ribbon and flowers. Features bronze ormolu: decorative flowers; lock plate and one remaining accent on right front foot. Five drawers(3 outside and 2 inside) sport tiny bronze knobs. Inset pin striping and hand-cut dovetails. Top rolls up to reveal slide-out work surface with original burgundy leather, three ... moredrawers and two cubbyholes. Cabriole legs with tiny feet. French Louis XVI Style Cylinder Top Writing Desk c. 19th Century Item# 130009GFL22 This is a gorgeous little treasure; crafted during the 19th Century. This French Louis XVI Style Ladies Writing Desk features a Cylinder Roll top that functions in conjunction with the opening of the single drawer. This effectively allows you to lock the desk and all contents with a single lock, because with the drawer being locked there is no access to the roll top; with the roll top being closed, the slant front is unable to open and the compartment beneath is sealed. The desk does not come with it's key, though these keys are often not difficult to come by. Retaining a warm cognac-mahogany tone throughout, a patina slowly developing under many layers of wax, the piece is delightful to look upon. The slant front drops to reveal a pink-red tone leather ... morewriting surface with gilt highlights, this likely a replacement. The back of this lifts to reveal a storage compartment. Three small hand dovetailed drawers with brass molding rest beneath a pair of inkwells flanking the concave pen channel. Antique Solid Oak Cylinder Desk circa 1875-1890
This is a solid oak hand carved work of art that anyone would have proud to adorn their home. A cylinder desk that purportedly was once owned by the tobacconist Philip Morris. His name is stamped in the upper right hand drawer of the desk. This unit is a handcarved and handcrafted work of art and was built between 1875 and 1890. There is one lock missing from one of the drawers and it cannot be replaced with an original as we were not able to locate one. In addition. The top of the desks surface has had an insert set in as the desk once had some mechanical device mounted in the top two drawers of the main part of the desk and apparantly rose through the top and was later replaced with matching oak boards, however, this was done before the turn of the century. This rare Victorian walnut cylinder desk c1885 belonged to Connecticut Governor Henry Roberts B 1853 D 1929. Roberts became alderman of Hartford. Connecticut in 1897. He became a member of the Connecticut House of Representatives in 1899. He held that position till 1901. He also was a member of the Connecticut State Senate from 1901 to 1902. He became lieutenant governor of Connecticut in 1903. He held that position till 1905. He became the 44th Governor of Connecticut on January 4, 1905. It's hard to find descriptive words when you buy and sell cool stuff. So here is for a words sake. A massive double cylinder executives desk. Awesome desk with the cabinet modesty panel in the center of bottom section, all original hardware on the drawer bottom and on the full interior section. It has killer burl walnut panels on the surfaces and the back is paneled out so it could be set in the middle of the room and be beautiful. The condition is stellar and we have cleaned it and it retains it's original finish. It is very large and the writing surface pulls out for a large work area. Victorian cylinder or barrel roll- top secretary desk and bookcase - 1800's
Antique high top desk/bookcase. The top and bottom come apart at base of glass door book case. This is a warm- toned walnut wood with burled walnut panels. My parents purchsed this as an antique in the 1950's from previous elderly owners- not antique store. They did not replace any of the hardware or the glass during the time they owned it and I believe these to be the original. But have no way of telling- glass has tiny bubbles, but I don't see a wave. The desk appears to be in good condition. The top of the desk pulls out for a writing surface. The writing surface is rough on top and some of the drawers have ink stains. as mentioned- this item has pretty much been left in original state. This is a very attractive and interesting piece. The little white handles/pulls and keyhole covers are made from bone or ivory. I have the original key for the little door in the center and the original key for the cylinder and drawers. Missing one bone keyhole cover and there is a few spots missing a small piece of veneer. As with all antique furniture expect to find some scratches and rubs from age and use. Antique French Directoire Mahogany Cylinder Desk Circa 1810 Description: A gorgeous French Directoire period cylinder desk. Circa 1810. The desk is mahogany and mahogany veneers with fine string inlay work. Secondary woods are oak and pine or fir. The interior has four functioning drawers and four dummy drawers. All have ivory pulls and string inlay. The drawers show an unusual mix of dovetailed and pegged construction. The sides are also paneled in an unusual manner. It's possible the desk is Russian but we are erring on the conservative side with French) The desk has a fine old finish, possibly original, and old hardware. There are some condition issues. The main one being the slight warp of the top section. The original leather writing surface has a large ink stain and there are some finish problems here and there. Eastlake 1875 Antique Cylinder Roll Top Secretary Desk& Bookcase. From the late Victorian or Eastlake period about 1870. This classic secretary desk has a cylinder or barrel roll with a bookcase above. Solid walnut with burl panels. The finish is in extremely fine condition with warm antique patina and very minor mars and shrinkage separations from age. Bookshelves are adjustable on this American made furniture. The roll has beautiful book matched burl. It glides smoothly open. Inside are cubicles and a locking drawer for papers. Inset with leather, the writing surface pulls out. Lower drawers have original nickel ring pulls and characteristic round or pin and cove dovetail joints of the era. Attributed to Daniel Trotter, Philadelphia, c.1810 This desk has a striking resemblance to a desk illustrated in Federal Philadelphia. The Athens of the Western World, Beatrice B. Garvan(Plate#20) Note the treatment of the molded sides that hold the tambor and molding just above the legs and drawers. We have seen no other forms like this and its relationship in design et al leads to our attribution. The craftsmanship is top drawer. Interestingly. The party that we acquired this from thought this was a Boston(i.e. Seymour) piece, because of the fine, English style cabinet work. Note the interior ... moredrawers retain their original ivory pulls. The drawer pulls are original, as are the side handles. This desk is of good size. And we picture this in an executive suite, or private study, wherein it can be closed for privacy and easily opened for usage. The desk’ base section is formed with it being made mostly of rosewood. The cylinder top lifts to revile a pull out desk section. Which is covered in green baize and set with various pigeonholes and drawers. Below the desk section it is set with two good storage cupboards, with a shelf inside. The top section is set with moveable shelves. They are behind two glazed doors. These are next to, two large column supports with acanthus mouldings. It has a shaped cornice and is raised on a caddy base. It may have been converted from something else originally, but is basically c1870. Size. Height 76” Width 46.5” Depth 24” Condition. The condition of the cabinet ... moreor desk is ok; the top section has been cut off and isn’t the neatest when separate but looks good when together.
