Here is an absolutely gorgeous antique mahogany desk with lovely burl mahogany veneer and border design inlay. Circa 1840 and American made. This slant front desk drawers. The desk stands 43 inches tall and measures 38 inches wide by 21 inches deep, front to back. The writing surface itself is 36 inches wide by 21 inches from front to back. The surface is beautiful and in very good condition. The inside of the desk also reveals 16 small drawers and an additional cubby with lovely inlay door as shown. Below the desk slant front. T here are four large drawers. Each 31 1/2 inches wide and 18 1/4 inches front to back and then 2 3/4, 3 3/4, 4 3/4 and 6 inches deep respectively, in descending order. Incredibly detailed hand carving on the drop down front as well as very nicely carved throughout the front. Claw feet legs. An appraiser from the Antiques Road Show stated it was an English piece from the early 1800s or late 1700s. However the scene looks like the men are possibly spanish. She stated that if the bookshelf that should be on top were there it would be worth around $5000, but as is it should be worth between $3,000& $4000. Really, very nice piece. I believe it is mahogany, but I'm not an expert on wood. The scene carved into the drop down piece appears to be soldiers on horses helping to corral women& children to get to safety. This beautiful 19th century Chippendale drop front secretary is in original condition including the knobs and hinges. Drawers have hand cut dovetails. There are many small drawers and 2 file drawers. There are some scuffs and wear due to age but overall the surface is very good. There is a split in the drop front caused by shrinkage of the extra wide board. There are also cracks at the hinges caused by not using the pullout supports. Desk front and lower cabinet doors with ribbons& garlands together with fine trim lines and geometrics. These inlays may be period or may have been added in the later Edwardian(1890-1920) The top of the drop front is trimmed all the way around its perimeter in satin wood. Both right and left sides of the three components display a rectangular accent trim inlay. Desk drop front. And upper and lower cabinet doors have large keyed case locks, which date the desk to the late George III period. Original keys are included. This is a superb example of English cabinet-making art at the highest level. The desk is in very good condition. With few dents.
