The interior of the desk is laid out in a step back semi amphitheater form with drawers possessing molded bases and a nice series of document cubbies. The case is completely correct and absolute original to the frame. Its simply a remarkably beautiful piece we couldn't possibly be prouder of. It is 38 1/2" long, 19" wide and 41 1/2" tall just perfect in scale. Salem Massachusetts, in the manner of John Chipman(b. 1746-1819) It features solid Cuban Mahogany case, each side crafted of a single solid plank, through-dovetailed at the top and dovetailed at the bottom. The slant front lid features an original keyhole escutcheon over what appears to be the original brass lock, falling onto arms that slide out with brass knobs- one original, the left one replaced. The open writing surface is clean, with what appear to be two original brass hinges, though curious patching is noted below flaking each hinge. Above the writing surface is a collection of nine small drawers, the centermost shell carved, each with brass knobs, below which a gallery of six pigeon holes rest in perfect symmetry. The case has four graduated drawers. Each of which feature period bail pull brass hardware flanking a replaced lock with original brass keyhole escutcheon. The drawers are hand dovetailed front and back, the front dovetails hidden behind applied cockbead molding. The drawers are yellow pine secondaries, the bottom being deeply chamfered along the perimeter to rabbet into the frame. They slide easily in and out of the case over replaced drawer runners, the drawer dividers running into the sides behind a mahogany facade, effectively hiding what are probably dovetail joints. The back of the case has all original backboards, though many nails are replaced. The molded apron features a carved shell drop down medallion in the center that mirrors the design of the middle drawer. The case rests over scroll cut bracket feet, each with an incredible flowing design in the manner of John Chipman. We do not believe the desk was executed in the shop of John Chipman. As his cases will typically feature exposed dovetail drawer dividers in the Newport manner, and the pidgeon-hole gallery will regularly featur

Great 19Th Century Formal Mahogany Hepplewhite Slant Lid Lap Desk. Hidden Draws
For sale is a great late 19th century formal mahogany Hepplewhite slant lid lap desk. The lap desk is an overall good condition with some areas of repair as noted in the pictures. This lap desk has several areas of hidden compartments and we've taken pictures of those areas before your consideration. The grain of the mahogany is a very nice with lots of green shelling in a medium brown wooden tone. There are two holding handles on each side of this piece. We are unsure if they are original to this lap desk. The escutcheons looked to be all original with original natural material. The draws all contain original dovetail joinery with what looks like poplar or pine as a secondary wood. There are a few original pieces left in this lap desk including some old glass inkwells a quilt pen and a small holding box. They will be included in the ... moresale but will be packed separately. They are not in the best condition so we are mainly selling it just this lap desk. The left portion of the top lid was at one point glued and repaired back together. There was also repair on the bottom right corner of this lap desk. Please see the detailed pictures of these areas. This lap desk is the very sturdy and an overall good condition. 19th C. Diminutive Primitive Slant lid Writing Clerks Childs Desk Spanish Rustic
Not sure what this really is but questions and comments welcome. Looks kind of fancy to be a child's desk but at 21x17x44-1/2 tall it makes a small adult desk. Possibly was it was meant to be portable and it does have a hasp lock on the lid.So some kind valuables were meant to be kept inside. It is very well made and sturdy,someone took the time to cut and joint this together,its not just a bunch of boards nailed together. Even the top board has a slight bevel the goes all they way around the bottom of the board. I'm thinking it may be Spanish or European and from the mid 1800 judging by the few nails that you can see. Beside the bottom wire hinge on right top door needing fixed all it needs is a quick dusting,it have a great old natural wood patina that does not need any color added to it.
