Antique Georgian Federal(?) Secretary Slant Front Desk Four Drawer Bureau 1840
Family lore has it that this was made in 1840 but I don't know for sure. This was my father's father and. Given to me but I'm headed to. South America and none of our children want it. All the drawers and top are joined. With dovetails at the corners. All the drawer bottoms have chamfered. Ends that fit into a tight track in the drawer. Sides. I'm guessing that drawer facewood. Is cherry(mahogany? and hinder parts of drawers made from boxwood. All the drawers fit precisely. The large drawers have grooves worn in them. From riding over guidance rails in the front of. The drawer entry points(see pics) It looks like. This was by design to accommodate the heavy. Drawers(which are prob mahogany. Not cherry) Veneer is poor in several areas. Esp the slope top front. The back view pic shows two arrows pointing out the width of a single ... moreboard which is a whopping 21 1/2 inches wide. Included in this pic at the bottom are shown. The three pieces of molding that need to be glued back onto the'ankles' The brass balls in the feet at each corner rotate. This fantastic Walnut Victorian Slant Front Secretary Desk Bookcase with Burl Accents and Large Fancy Crown breaks down into three pieces for transport(crown, bookcase top with desk, and bottom base) is full of character, has many lovely design details, original wavy glass, and a spectacular warm finish which appears to be original. This is a gorgeous. Early 1800's, American Federal style secretary. Solid wood made from cherry and tiger oak. Has a beautiful tulip inlay. It has some slight cracks on the slant top of the desk shown in photos but is in great condition for being 200 years old. The right pull-out support for the desk is missing the knob but an easy fix. Here is an absolutely gorgeous antique mahogany desk with lovely burl mahogany veneer and border design inlay. Circa 1840 and American made. This slant front desk drawers. The desk stands 43 inches tall and measures 38 inches wide by 21 inches deep, front to back. The writing surface itself is 36 inches wide by 21 inches from front to back. The surface is beautiful and in very good condition. The inside of the desk also reveals 16 small drawers and an additional cubby with lovely inlay door as shown. Below the desk slant front. T here are four large drawers. Each 31 1/2 inches wide and 18 1/4 inches front to back and then 2 3/4, 3 3/4, 4 3/4 and 6 inches deep respectively, in descending order. The lock sets are original and in working order and the keys are replaced. The drawers are all still lined with a thin blue paper.certainly a Victorian ... morething. The desk is in very good early 19th century condition in that it has had some restoration through the years.ie veneer and stringing inlay repairs and replacements. Hardware is old, however, not original, and there is some restoration to the drawer slides. All in all, very sturdy and ready to use! Cherished and not abused, from a non-smoking home. My parents bought it in Charlottesville, VA in the early 1970s. Beautiful striped veneer vertically across the slanted top. In exceptional condition for the age. Some small losses and light cracks in veneer, very small, I'm happy to send photos. Slant top desk that has tight brass hinges and longer elaborate hinge guides on each size of the slant plank Lovely inside. With drawers, and scalloped/scrolled cubbies. Four horizontal drawers. Measures approximately 53-1/4" ... morewide. 29"tall at bottom of slant/40" tall, and 19" deep at fold of slanted area, top is 8-1/2" I was just researching the dovetail joints on the 4 large drawers to see if I could better date this desk. The dovetails are not hand cut and irregular. But are consistent. Online I found this description: A close inspection shows no irregular saw cuts or variation from a skilled craftsman, but rather a precise and identical manufactured machined joint. These machine-cut dovetails are as strong and long lasting as the hand-made joints, and became the standard of better American furniture ever since the late 1890's. So this desk may be very late 1800s or early 1900s. Another indication is that the back is not multiple boards. But appears to be an early plywood? There is a tiny hole drilled in the back where I think my dad had our phone(land line) cord come in so the phone could be in the desk. Regardless, it is a beautiful old desk. This piece is in wonderful condition although it has one unprofessional aesthetic repair on the right side of the book shelf pictured. Antique Plantation Desk. 19th Century, Secretary, Slant Front, Presidents. Amazing 19th Century plantation desk from what we believe to be the late 1800's. Has turned legs with a slant front desk top that lifts up and a secretary style top with doors that open and cubbies inside. Not sure of history of this piece. We obtained it from an estate sale in Johnston County, North Carolina. One of the most interesting thing about this desk is that in the upper corner of the right door there is a piece of paper taped inside that lists the presidents of the United States and has 24 of them with Woodrow Wilson being the last one and the date listed is 1893. This piece looks like perhaps the top may have been added later, not sure, and also where the slant top is looks like it was altered at one time as well. An amazing piece, all pegged. This slant front desk has 4 drawers and a fitted interior. The desk stands 46 inches tall and measures 46 inches wide by 21 inches deep. Dovetailed case as shown in the photos. The surface is beautiful and in good condition for her age. The inside of the desk also reveals a 6 drawers interior and an additional cubby holes Below the desk slant front. There are four gratuated drawers, The lock sets are original and in working order but no keys. We are selling a lovely antique secretary drop front desk with an inlaid design on the front. As you can see the inlay pattern is quite nice and incorporates mother of pearl. The desk stands approximately 40" high by 28" wide by 15.5" deep. While the desk is a little rough around the edges- it could use a thorough cleaning and does have a number of scuffs and dings. As well as some loss to the back panel and the lower right edge of the front- it has a nice shape and patina with a little TLC will have a lot of use left to offer.
