Antique Davenport style desk purchased at an auction in New Jersey many years ago. It has original finish with green material(like oilcloth) writing area on top. It has beautiful graining on the inside with shelves and a small drawer. There are three pull out drawers on the right side as seen in the picture. They all have working locks as does the slanted top and the key is necessary to open the drawers as there is no knob on any of them. Desk measures 28 inches across the front. 21 inches back to front, 33 1/2 inches to the top of the small rail in the back. Fine Brass Bound Mahogany Travel Writing Desk Ship Capt Signed James London 1814
Antique Ship Captain's Writing Desk Estate find from the home of a collector with with a New England family provenance. This is a large heavy Ship Captain's Traveling Writing Desk. It has decorative brass bound corners and edges, side handles, lock front and inscribed monogrammed plaque on top with the initials"JL" Inside there is a top surface piece that fits into the top with a small latch(the second latch is missing) Both the top and bottom inside pieces have crisscrossed ribbons on one side to hold paperwork. In the front is a rows of compartments- two small ones have lids and the center longer section has a curved wood lid with a handle. On the reverse side of this longer lid there is writing that says"James London August 1814" There is another name in the middle but I can't make it out. There is a Brass ... morepiece on the side that lifts up to hold the top of the desk up. The one on the other side is missing. Under that piece is a small brass dowel that when lifted out allows for a bottom drawer to be opened and pulled out- the drawer runs the length of the inside of the desk. Beautiful Mahogany Wood finish on the outside. In very good condition for the age. There are some small missing parts inside, but the piece can still function as a travel desk. Makes a beautiful display piece and collectible. Inside the desk was an early newspaper article about a Captain John Julius Guthrie who was the executive officer of the sloop of war Saratoga who captured a slave ship at the mouth of the Congo River in 1861. It says this was the last slaver captured by an American warship and the captain then resigned and entered the confederate service. The article is a letter to the newspaper written by the son of the captain and he points out that the slave ship was owned, manned and equipped in the city of Boston, Mass. It is possible that the desk was later used by this man, but I am not sure- it was left in the desk, and I can include it if the buyer is interested. Desk measures 20" long. 11&

When used at sea on a Clipper Ship the desk was securely bolted down to prevent movement. The hinged desk top is 21" X 15" and 3/4" thick. It opens up to reveal two interior drawers with knobs. The drawers are each 9"X 5"X 2" The open area inside of the desk when the hinged top is open is 18 5/8" X 13" and the depth of the opening at the front of the opening is 2 1/2" Gradually increasing in depth to 4 3/4" at the back. There is an open lid hinge on the left side of the desk that holds the top of the desk in an open position. The two(2) hinges that connect the desk top to the base both work smoothly and easily. Sitting on top of the desk top at the rear is a box with attached lid that opens to reveal seven(7) individual compartments that were used for stationary. Ink, etc. The top of the desk is leather with an embossed design running along the perimeter. The top and front of the desk are beautifully designed and decorated in old world workmanship enhanced with inlaid designs that are both elegant and masculine in appearance. This rare and beautiful campaign cabinet is made of quarter sawn English oak. And has German silver hardware and decorations. It is 16-1/4" high, 17-1/2" wide, and 11" deep. It has many little cubbies of varying depth, and a top filing section for business transactions. There is a pull out section in the top for an inkwell. 1800's Captains- Davenport Desk. Rare inlay details. While the desk has a few chips. Inlay pieces missing, etc. it is extremely solid and has an exceptional historical appearance. Fine drawer dovetail detail. Original white stone wheels in good condition. Original leather top remains is secure. Appears all original except the inside bottom of one drawer and one knob on one of the false side drawer faces. All drawers have lock mechanism. Note desk lock face has been repaired. Davenport Victorian Ship Captain Antique 1880 Walnut Desk. This style of Victorian desk was called a"Davenport" after its English inventor or a"ship captain's" desk because it made efficient use of space on board. Solid walnut. This American made furniture was restored some years ago. The gleaming hand rubbed finish is in excellent condition, there is a shrinkage separation from age, see photos. Side drawers have"racetrack" moldings and carved walnut motif pulls and were rebuilt. The writing surface is leather with gold tooling. Underneath are tiny cubicles for papers and a velvet lining. Measurements of this jewel of a desk are 24" wide. 24" deep, 35" tall to the top of the gallery, and the desktop slopes up from 29" at the front. 1800's Primitive Wood Ship Captains WRITING LAP DESK for restoration or parts
Offered for sale is this early to mid 1800's wood lap writing desk for restoration in poor overall condition. It has a real primitive look to it and would be a great piece if restored. I purchased it at a Maritime Nautical auction in the Finger Lakes Region of New York State. The desk does have much wear and tear. And is missing some of its hardware. The lock and handles are missing and there is a loose board that needs to be re-glued under the small compartments. There is wear on the felt surface and the edges of the wood. It is a little unusual in the sense that it has a"lift top" panel that comes off as the pictures show. The box measures about 17" long by 10 1/2" deep by 7" tall. The desk has a great old antique look to it and could be a really fine looking desk with a little work.
