Leather writing surface measures 13" x 10 1/2" One side of the writing surface is spring-loaded for opening. It appears to have been repaired at some point. top can be opened with a small screwdriver inserted and sliding sideways from left to right. The second side opens easily with a fingernail. Revealing a second wood panel. This second panel is removable by pulling up the small side wall that houses the inkwell. This action releases the wood panel below& within there are two secret compartment drawers. These hidden drawers are seen in photos. One brass inlay is missing at one bottom corner. No key. VERY NICE ANTIQUE FOLD OUT WRITING SLOPE/ DESK- LATE 1800's? MAHOGANY? Up for sale is this very nice writing slope. We don't know the age of this item but it looks like it's from the late 1800's. It might be oak or mahogany. But whatever it is it's very nice. It has a little drawer below the writing slope area. The slope folds out and has a leather surface, this may have been replaced at some point. The hinges on the side also don't look original and were probably replaced. You can tell around the hinges where the wood failed and they replaced the hinges. The top flips up too to allow access to the slots for papers and envelopes that is in the back. Behind the writing slope is a wider area to hold other things. We've tried to show how the whole thing works in the first five pictures. The top has a lock but it doesn't ... morehave a key. The drawer has a lock on it and it does have the key as you can see in the pictures. It's very nicely done. The drawer is dovetail mortised on the sides. It's a very nice size and would be fairly portable if you needed it to be. It measures 14.5" W x 9.25" D x 10.25" H. The slope part is 13.75" H by 13.25" W. It weighs 9 lbs. Antique Civil War Era Fold Up Lap Desk Wood Veneered Traveling Writing Slope
This is a Beautiful 19 th Century Traveling Lap Desk. The box is covered in a wood veneer and has an inlay circle on the lid and around the key hole. The writing surface is covered in green velvet and is original to the piece. The hinges are original and in good repair. In addition to storage under the writing surfaces. There are four compartments, one of which is covered. The bottom of the desk is covered in green felt. The box is in very good aged condition. There are few places were the veneer has broken and there are some age or shrinkage cracks to the wood(see pictures) The box is 14” across. 9” wide, and 5” tall. It was procured at an Antique Estate Auction in Central Kentucky.

Antique Wood Roll Top Lap Desk, Travel Writing Slope Box w Drawer, Nice Patina
Beautiful Antique Roll Top Lap Desk. Writing Slope Up for your consideration is this truly beautiful antique lap desk. Made of wood. I am uncertain of the actual type of wood but has nice graining. This is just great in every way, it is intact and very secure when completely shut and when you pull out the drawer at the front, it will open the roll top portion in the back to expose a three section area inside. Once the roll top is open, you can unfold the desk portion which flips open from back to front and leans securely on the open drawer for stability, the desk has a purple or a worn blue felt top with brass hinges. Again, the wood is very nice inside and out, the drawer opens nicely as does the roll top portion. There is a large transfer decoration on the wood desk top, there is also the very slight remains of one on the top of the roll ... moretop framed area. There are only two areas with minor problems, first is the lower right corner which is missing a small corner wood piece, and the upper left corner of the framing of the roll top where there is also a small piece of wood missing; otherwise, working very well and looking very good. There is a brass lock in place for the drawer but no key and the hinges are brass as well and seem to be original. It measures 12 1/8" wide, 9 1/4" deep, 5 1/2" tall. It is very clean, no major breaks, cracks, or discoloration. Nice patina, nice scroll design in wood at the top roll top framing, transfer decoration is wearing and almost gone on the top portion, and of course, the two missing pieces mentioned earlier. We estimate that this is from the mid 19th century. The box opens up to create a flat writing space which is covered with gilt trimmed leather and some little compartments. The writing surface lifts up to reveal more storage on both sides. If you know the secret of the box. You can make a panel pop out which reveals two small secret drawers. It is obvious that the upper compartment with the secret release has been reworked at some point in the past, and as a result there are some small pieces of wood and a metal band(spring? that go into that compartment to keep it functioning properly. The stand is an interesting addition to the lap desk. It is open when the desk is not present, and features a little pull out tray on two sides. The desk is made with a wood veneer and brass inlaid hardware. You can see that there is some veneer separating in one place, a crack on the front, and a crack in the wood on the bottom of one compartment as well as some assorted minor nicks and chips as you often see with things that have survived for over 160 yea

ENGLISH made burr Walnut writing slope lap desk from the victorian era approx 1860-1880.lots of inlay. It is in fantastic condition and ready to use. It has had its leather writing surface replaced at some point in its life. Looks good. There have been repairs done in bits on the sides of box.nothing terribly bad and not terribly noticeable. felt on bottom has been replaced. The ink well comparment on one side has dividers and due to a bit of wood shrinkage. They will fall but they stay put if you put them in place and set the lap desk somewhere.the hidden comparment is missing the long piece of wood that has the trigger mechanism on it to hide the 3 drawers.it doesnt take away from the charm or beauty of it.one tiny drawer knob is missing.over all, its in great usable, sturdy condition.ready to be used to write your letters.i have 3 and ... moream keeping two.hard to let one go but i dont write enough letters to justify keeping 3. This is a beautiful antique campaign lap desk in very nice condition. There is a repaired hinge(see pics) and the ink well top has stripped threads. The finish is in good shape with some scratches and small dings. The wood appears to be mahogany. It is complete with 2 storage compartment dividers. The pen case cover and one original ink well. In the 19th century. British deck officers kept the daily log and traveling civilians wrote letters on lap desks like these. A gorgeous 19th Century(Regency era? burr walnut folding travel desk with brass inlay and two secret drawers. At the top of the writing surface are three compartments for stamps. Inkwell and pens. Included is the original inkwell with brass cap, and writing instruments and accessories which came with the box. There an open storage area beneath each half of the writing surface and a panel that hides two secret drawers, which are accessed by the careful removal of panels next the inkwell to activate the release spring. Condition as noted above: This writing slope is in very good to excellent condition for its age. The exterior wood and brass inlay and hinges are in excellent condition. NOTE: the key is missing. The interior is in very good to just shy of excellent condition. The brass hinges all work fine. The secret compartment latch and boxes ... moreall work fine.
