There is a name and year written on the bottom of the desk, but it is very faint and can only be seen while hold the desk at a certain angle to the light. I tried to capture the writing in a picture, but could only get the first part of the name. The name stands out the most. The rest of the writing, I believe would be where the owner lived and the year is much fainter. It looks like Maggie C Farr(something) something) 1876 or 1896. The box measures about 11 ¼” x 7 3/4” x 3 ½” closed) Opened and lying flat the desk measures about 16” long. The inside bottom felt writing surface that lifts up is tight and strong while the top felt writing surface that lifts up is wiggly, but still very much intact. Very nice old lap desk. Beautiful Antique Writing Lap Desk with Monogram
This is a great old piece with gold painted letters on the top. The lap desk is large and measures 14 1/2" long x 10" wide x 4" deep. The box is in good antique used condition. With the exception of a crack in the top of the box(see photos) The interior matrial is a dark blue velvet. Please let me know if you have any questions about this great piece. This is a very neat old travel lap desk. I would guess hand made. Neat inlays and borders. it measures 12.5 long by 8 wide by 5 tall. the inside has compartments, and hinged covers on the inside. the hinge on the left side of the top inside is loose, and the felt has disintegrated from the boards on the inside and the bottom. there is a removable pencil holder. the desk is solid and has no damage other than the broken hinge on the inside. see my other auctions for more neat old items. Antique Lap Desk: American, Federal Period
This is an extremely rare American Made grain painted slope from the 1780-1800 Period. Almost all the slopes in this period were imported from England and just a few from France. It is all original including lock(no key) Handles, hinges, and finishes. The only contemporary component is the covering on the wiriting board which was carefully chosen to duplicate the original fabric which was disintegrated when we purchased this box some two years ago(a swath of the original material is include for comparison) The condition of the box is very interesting. It shows years of use and some of it hard use. Wood is worn to groves and polished sufaces by the passing of fingers. Ink stains substantial portions of the interior wood, grease stains are evident, penciled numbers are writen on the back of the writing boards. And, five receipts and notes dating ... morefrom 1866 to 1871 have been shellacked to the back of one of the writing boards. The notes refer to purchase of horse hardware and trips with wagons to various destinations indicating that this box at one time was owned by a teamster. Surely this was the property or a fairly well to do individual initially as were most of these artifacts when new. It appears that it transitioned over time to be a working box for a person who drove horses for a living. I am sure that if only it could talk it indeed would tell some interesting stories both about our post colonial period not to mention our Civil War period. All the brass are of the proper hand made varieties for the period and the basic material of the box is white pine. Suggesting a North Atlantic origin. One of a kind for the seriouse collector of slopes. Classic 19"X10"X7" measurements. The original owner(1866-1936) was wheelchair-bound. So this desk was well used and loved. It has remained in the same family ever since. The box measures 15" wide, 10½" deep, and 5½" tall(I believe this is large for a writing box of this age) You must look at the photographs to appreciate the beauty of this piece! The top is adorn with delicate designs. Separated by thin strips of metal. Gold gilding, mother-of-pearl, and various shades of inlaid wood make up the floral/vine-like center and the borders around it. Even the ... moretop's edges feature a gold& mother-of-pearl star design. There is a diamond-shaped brass plate around the key hole; the original key is included and still works to lock& unlock the box! There is also an inlaid brass notch on the box's top to lift the lid with ease. Amazing craftsmanship! The box has a hinged lid and opens fully to reveal a rich purple velvet-covered inclined surface. The purple is now faded around the edges with age(as you can see in the photos) There are five cubbyholes. One of which is rectangular(with a lid) to accommodate pens/pencils; and four square cubbies perfectly sized for the two ink bottles(included, although one is missing the cap) as well as other writing supplies. Other features include a spacious storage area in the base for paper or small books This is opened by the pull of a green ribbon(now faded) And last(but not least) is a hard writing surface that flips down from the lid. This compartment has a small latch-mechanism to keep it shut when not in use. This box is made of a wood veneer. Here for bid is a 19th century folding lap travel desk. I was told that this size of box was often used by sea captains saving room in there tight state rooms. Maybe just a theory not sure. I would consider this box desk in pretty good condition for its age and compared to others I have seen. However as you can see in the provided photos it is not perfect and has wear. Nicks, cracks and chips that one would expect to see in this old of a piece. It needs inkwell replacement so forth and so on. I have no key for this desk but they are easily found. Some of the brass or copper inlay has been tacked a few small pieces missing. This type of scowling inlay is very hard to find for they took a lot of skill and work to make I am sure. This is one gorgeous piece of wood. It is burled walnut and is from the early 1800s. It is a lap desk or maybe used as a bed tray. It is 32" long and 14" tall. It is in really nice condition. You can obviously tell it is a true antique but I don't see any chips on the edges, etc. Please ask if you have questions. I usually do not take returns but if you are not pleased with this desk I will gladly refund your purchased price, but you will need to cover the shipping both ways. I also realized I have one negative feedback and did not realize it. I am talking to ebay now about getting that removed. It was for a $5.00 set of door knobs and to a new buyer. Gorgeous Antique Inlaid Writing Lap Desk
This is a fantastic old wooden lap desk with inlaid design on the top and the front. The lap desk measures 11 5/8" long x 8 3/8" wide x 5 1/8" high. The box is in antique used condition. The inlay is in very good shape. The box is done with veneer over wood. It looks like the little shield on the top and the piece around the key are done with gilding. It is worn as shown on the photos. The veneer is cracking a bit on the top front left corner and a bit on the side in the same area. There is a piece of veneer missing(about 1" long x 1/4" wide) Otherwise there are a few stress cracks in the veneer on the top. Generally the outside of the box is in good condition. On the inside of the box. There was probably velvet covering the wooden desk sections. Antique Walnut Gold Embossed Leather Top Dovetailed Lap Desk
This is an Antique Gold Embossed Leather Top Lap Desk. The wood has a beautiful patina. It appears to me that the top frame of the desk is walnut and the secondary woods of the side and back panels is pine. The back corners have beautiful hand cut dovetails as seen in a pair of closeup photos. That attest to the age and hand made nature of this piece. The desk was purchased in England. And we are pretty confident it was made there as well. We do not know the age specifically but we are pretty confident it is a 19th Century or older piece. The total size of the desktop frame is 18 3/4" x 13 3/4" The leather clad writing surface is 15" x 10" The height at the back corner is 3" Transitioning very slightly higher at the edges transition to the upper surface. The three sided framed out support measures 17 1/2" x 12 ... more1/4" The desk weighs 3 1/2 pounds and it is a substantial, solid piece. You can see the construction in the photo of the underside and the two photos of the dovetails. The three panels are attached with screws. There are some remnants of some sort of paper covering on the bottom as seen. I do not know what this was from. With the warm glow of the walnut. The beautiful leather, and the great hand cut dovetails, this fine desk would be a wonderful addition to your home for decor and/or actual use! Condition Overall. The desk is in excellent overall condition. The walnut top has a beautiful patina with dings and wear consistent with its age and use. The leather top has a couple very minor scratches that the photo flash highlighted making them more apparent than they actually are. The top is firmly and uniformly glued to the wood. In some of the photos, you can see some slightly wavy appearance that is an artifact of the original creation of the piece, but we will guarantee your satisfaction that the writing surface is as you would expect it to be. This is a Beautiful 19 th Century Traveling Lap Desk. The box is covered in a wood veneer and has an inlay circle on the lid and around the key hole. The writing surface is covered in green velvet and is original to the piece. The hinges are original and in good repair. In addition to storage under the writing surfaces. There are four compartments, one of which is covered. The bottom of the desk is covered in green felt. The box is in very good aged condition. There are few places were the veneer has broken and there are some age or shrinkage cracks to the wood(see pictures) The box is 14” across. 9” wide, and 5” tall. Another unique item from Indelible Curiosities Antique Early 19th C Brass Mahogany Lap Desk w/Hoffer Docs Fnd In Hidden Drawers Description: This lap desk contains no ordinary so-called"hidden" drawers! We purchased this at an auction only to discover when we brought it home that this mahogany with brass inlay lap desk has a hidden locking mechanism which when released springs a thin board off the inside of the desk revealing two small drawers. Like something out of a treasure hunter's dream. The hunt did not end there for when we opened the drawers we found- no, not gold coins(darn it) but several folded documents all from the early 1800s! There are four papers in total. One of which is the original instructions for opening the secret compartment, the other three are all related to one person, Selina Hoffer a.k.a. Selina James ... moreand later as Selina Hall(the latter two are her married names) Two are her original marriage certificates dated 1825 and 1834 and the third is a less formal all handwritten original document stating who, where, and when(August 26, 1794) Selina was baptized. We have scanned these separately into one pdf file and will include the original documents as well as print-outs for the buyer(happy to provide the pdf files as well) Please note the last image is of all four scanned images of the papers but combined using Adobe Photoshop into one image- this is not representative of our scanned pdf files as we did those scanning each paper separately. We will include the objects we found in the two inkwells: orange pellets which are possibly ink pellets intended to be dissolved in water and a broken into two pieces red hard somewhat flat rectangular object with what appears to be some black ink on it- possibly also dissolves or is meant for mixing ink. Antique Mahogany Lap (Travel) Desk - ca. 1800 - w/secret drawer,ink bottle,more
Here pictured is an antique mahogany lap desk. Circa 1800. Probably English. Measures approx. 20" across x 10" wide x 6" high(closed) No key. Several compartments. Ink bottle intact but top of neck is jagged(see photo#6) Photo#4 shows a secret drawer on one side only accessed by removing the metal dowel pictured on the felt. If the desk were closed and locked the drawer would be inaccessible. The ledge on the far back of the top surface is removable as are the lids of the middle small compartment and the compartment to its far right. I believe the metal parts are brass and the knob on the middle compartment is bone of some sort. There are ink stains on one of the lower compartments(see photo#8) The wood bottom of the'secret' drawer is split. And the felt. Which seems original, is split(approx. one(1) inch) along the ... morecentral seam. We obtained this from my mother in laws estate few years ago. My wife said that her mother inherited it from her father and her grandfather had it so this is old! Antique Wood Roll Top Lap Desk, Travel Writing Slope Box w Drawer, Nice Patina
Beautiful Antique Roll Top Lap Desk. Writing Slope Up for your consideration is this truly beautiful antique lap desk. Made of wood. I am uncertain of the actual type of wood but has nice graining. This is just great in every way, it is intact and very secure when completely shut and when you pull out the drawer at the front, it will open the roll top portion in the back to expose a three section area inside. Once the roll top is open, you can unfold the desk portion which flips open from back to front and leans securely on the open drawer for stability, the desk has a purple or a worn blue felt top with brass hinges. Again, the wood is very nice inside and out, the drawer opens nicely as does the roll top portion. There is a large transfer decoration on the wood desk top, there is also the very slight remains of one on the top of the roll ... moretop framed area. There are only two areas with minor problems, first is the lower right corner which is missing a small corner wood piece, and the upper left corner of the framing of the roll top where there is also a small piece of wood missing; otherwise, working very well and looking very good. There is a brass lock in place for the drawer but no key and the hinges are brass as well and seem to be original. It measures 12 1/8" wide, 9 1/4" deep, 5 1/2" tall. It is very clean, no major breaks, cracks, or discoloration. Nice patina, nice scroll design in wood at the top roll top framing, transfer decoration is wearing and almost gone on the top portion, and of course, the two missing pieces mentioned earlier. Nice Antique Circa late 1800's walnut slanted lap desk/writing cabinet. Brass hinged cover flips open to a removable felt writing surface with storage for documents and paper underneath. Two individual inkwell compartments are separated by a long compartment that stores pens and other writing materials. It is removable and does need some reinforcement(gluing) One glass inkwell remains. Very good condition with a minor crack in wood where it meets the left corner. This is an antique Victorian 1800s solid wood sloped travel lap desk with working brass lock and key. Featuring. Brass hinges and lock, blue felt writing surface with two storage compartments underneath. It has two inkwell compartments and the center section for pens lifts out. Found inside the center compartment was six nice quill pen ends and what appears to be some sort of pencil. The lapdesk wood looks beautiful and is undamaged. There is an inscription inside the box it is pictured and says that" This box was presented on December 25th 1852" So obvioulsy a Christmas gift. This is a one-of-a-kind handmade Antique Lap Desk. One of my favorite things that I have ever owned. I hope that someone finds it that appreciates the work that went into making something like this in the 1800's or better yet if the maker's descendants could find it. It measures 15.5" in length. 6" tall and 10" deep. It has thousands of tiny pieces of wood inlayed to create a beautiful scene which I believe may be from Germany. When you open the top it lays all the way back reveling the leather writing area. It has storage compartments in the top and bottom halves. It comes with two ink bottles. Under the section where you keep the pen is a secret compartment. Underneath the pen compartment is where the maker has recorded his name and date. Antique Walnut Lap Writing Desk Brass Inlay Drawer 1800s Old Inkwell Period
Just found at an estate sale here in Boston a really really nice and completely original American Federal 1820s writing desk with side drawer. Nice Period inkwells. Amazing condition for being almost 200 years old. Nice period piece and very hard to find. All of the hinges are strong including the writing compartments. Nice ivory inlay on the skeleton key face and a wonderful lock mechanism. I've been told this is military because of all of the brass reinforcements. I think it still could be a desk for very wealthy individuals. the very long drawer pulls out smoothly and on very solid condition. Great dove tailing and nice chamfered areas on the drawers backside. Both ends have a drawer handle but only one opens it up. The writing surface blotter board looks original. A little veneer loss on left inside edge. The top of the desk has areas ... morewhere the wood curves down then up. Not that noticeable. Dimensions are 21 1/2 long x 11 deep x 7 high. The last owner appears to have been an Elizabeth M Updike. Recently acquired it at an estate sale. Would make a great gift or keep it for yourself. The lap desk is probably English made. But that is just a guess, you be the judge. F or your consideration is this walnut antique lap desk in very nice condition. The walnut case has a great luster to it. What makes this piece really unique is the secret slide drawer compartment. It can be opened by opening the case and then taking the brass rod out of the left side of the box that"locks" it in place. The previous owner was an Elizabeth M Updike from Princeton NY. The famous writer. John Updike, had a daughter named Elizabeth, ... morebut correspondence is too old to have been hers. Possibly and earlier family member as John was born in 1932. There are some wedding invitations from the early 1900s in this drawer, a letter that has Princeton 66 on it. Not sure if year, for 1966 or means something else. There is a letter to a Mr. E. M. Updike in the drawer as well from a Turnbull that accompanied a Liberty Bond Medal for WWI efforts in gather funds for the war effort(Princeton NJ Victory Liberty Loan Committee) It probably meant Mrs. but you know the government, they can't even get the sex of a party right in correspondence, eh? Another piece of paper with genealogical information on it talking about Updike's grandfather Samuel Montgomery(1816-1878) married to a Matilda Stockton. Also a mention of a Samuel Updike and his children in this same piece. Also correspondence to Elizabeth Updike in 1927 from Wm Ball& Sons in West Chester. PA. Price lists and pictures of hardware which me thinks was probably to address the missing handle on the one side of the lap desk. ENGLISH made burr Walnut writing slope lap desk from the victorian era approx 1860-1880.lots of inlay. It is in fantastic condition and ready to use. It has had its leather writing surface replaced at some point in its life. Looks good. There have been repairs done in bits on the sides of box.nothing terribly bad and not terribly noticeable. felt on bottom has been replaced. The ink well comparment on one side has dividers and due to a bit of wood shrinkage. They will fall but they stay put if you put them in place and set the lap desk somewhere.the hidden comparment is missing the long piece of wood that has the trigger mechanism on it to hide the 3 drawers.it doesnt take away from the charm or beauty of it.one tiny drawer knob is missing.over all, its in great usable, sturdy condition.ready to be used to write your letters.i have 3 and ... moream keeping two.hard to let one go but i dont write enough letters to justify keeping 3. This is a cool item. ... moreA Lovely Antique Lap Desk I believe it is called, circa late 1800's made of wood with Brass bands and has 2 glass Ink bottles with lids and even a Secret Compartment, if you lift up one side of the flap on the inside there is a button that releases the wood flapinside and exposes the two little drawers.also there is some initials of a"J.S" just inside on the brass edge scratched into it, could be old owners initials too though.now for condition, it does have some issues, first is there is a crack in the wood along the whole top(see pic) and also the same on the bottom piece, then there is a small sliver of wood missing from the inside flap that covers the secret compartment but it still works. also the leather on the two inside flaps are deteriating here and there.and on the outside end on the top edge there is a piece of wood missing.also has some nicks and scuffs. The brass Keyhole cover comes off but not a big deal.looks like lock would still work.No Key.I know I make it sound terrible but It really is a cool antique piece of history.Please look at pictures closely and bid accordingly. THE PREVIOUS OWNER SAID IT BELONGED TO HIS GRANDFATHER IN ENGLAND. F or your consideration is this walnut antique lap desk in very nice condition. The walnut case has a great luster to it. What makes this piece really unique is the secret compartment with 2 small drawers. There is a board that runs the length of the case just under the inkwell and pen holder section. The secret compartment board still in place and you Just push down on right side and it springs out. Amazing that it is all there and still works. All still there behind the secret panel and there are white bone knobs on each drawer. My guess is this pieces dates to the early to ... moremid 1800s. You be the judge before buying. This lap desk is beautiful with only small surface scratches. The corners have brass corner pieces. One of the leather pieces needs re gueing but i am leaving that too the new owner. Very nice wood and graining. The inside folding pieces are still all there as well. The lock and latch is there and comes with a key that operates the lock. That does not happen very often with a piece of this one's age anymore. The top of the desk has leather dark material on it which is hard and shows some wear. Both sides of the lap desk open for storage. Has open areas for two ink bottles in the well areas. One on the left and one on the right. Very RARE that both ink wells are with the piece obviously one had red ink and the other black. And a storage area for the pens that has a wood cover. Two other storage areas between the pen area and ink holder, The brass top piece is in place, cannot see any engraving on it and the brass piece around the lock keyhole is also in place. F or your consideration is this Asian Antique lap desk in very nice condition. The wood case has a great luster to it. The veneer on top of the case shows some cracking. What makes this piece really unique is the great mother of pearl. Metal and wood inlay that it has on it. The case has some dings in it and some veneer chipped off. Some of theinlay is missing, but the desk still looks and shows well. There is also an old metal lock still on the top of the case. Unfortunately no key comes with the desk. My guess is this piece dates to the mid to late ... more1800s. You be the judge before buying. This lap desk is beautiful with only small surface scratches. The corners have brass corner pieces. A small piece of wood is missing on the left side where the secret drawer comes out. Very nice wood and graining. The inside folding pieces are still all there as well. The hinges are all there. The rod the goes thru one of the hinges is not and will need attention. The lock and latch and the brass piece around the key hole are there, the case did not come with a key. The top of the desk has a green felt fabric on it which shows wear. The pull is on the secret drawer to pull it out. The other side has the brackets to hold the pull, but the pull is not there. Both sides of the lap desk open for storage. Has open areas for two ink bottles in the well areas. One on the left and one on the right. And a storage area for pens that has a wood cover and a brass handle to remove it with nice detailing. The bottom of the case of the lap desk has green felt on it. I see no maker's mark on the lock mechanism. The two top covers that hinge out are still securely attached to the base of the case by their hinges. The lap desk measures 15-7/8" wide.
