This antique early Victorian Davenport desk is fabulous quality& in excellent original condition. It's walnut all over. Consisting of burr walnut, figured walnut& solid walnut. The front of the slope is serpentine shaped& beneath this are boldly shaped cabriole legs, with wonderful carvings. There is a gallery on the top, which lifts up to reveal some compartments inside. There are drawers on the right hand side& on the left hand side there are dummy drawers. The back is finished off as nice as the front& it has ... morebun feet with concealed original casters underneath which look as if they are wooden. I've had the leather replaced with a hand coloured brownish black tooled leather. The inside is all original, with two small drawers, two dummies& it's all sycamore lined. Rising from bun feet with semi-concealed white china castors into the main body featuring four drawers with mahogany linings and original turned knobs. An inlaid knee panel shows boxwood double stringing which is matched on the upper writing surface. A very fine and unusual antique. Circa 1880, Renaissance Revival Davenport lift top desk. The solid walnut case has burl walnut veneers in recessed and raised panels. There are four drawers on the left side with brass ring handles. There are matching faux drawer fronts on the right side that are decoration only. The top brown leather writing surface on lid opens to a pine and maple compartment, the cubbyhole with two burl fronted drawers. The bottom front doors have burl veneer panels. The right door opens to a compartment with stationary maple shelves. The door reverse has a birdeye maple veneer panel. The left door is faux and does not open. There is a nice top spindled walnut gallery, and carved walnut front scroll feet and drop finials. The desk measures 40" tall by 31" wide by 26" deep, the leather writing surface 26-3/4" ... morewide by 14-1/4" deep. From bottom of desk overhang to floor is 25-1/2" tall. Davenport Victorian Ship Captain Antique 1880 Walnut Desk. This style of Victorian desk was called a"Davenport" after its English inventor or a"ship captain's" desk because it made efficient use of space on board. Solid walnut. This American made furniture was restored some years ago. The gleaming hand rubbed finish is in excellent condition, there is a shrinkage separation from age, see photos. Side drawers have"racetrack" moldings and carved walnut motif pulls and were rebuilt. The writing surface is leather with gold tooling. Underneath are tiny cubicles for papers and a velvet lining. Measurements of this jewel of a desk are 24" wide. 24" deep, 35" tall to the top of the gallery, and the desktop slopes up from 29" at the front.
