This fine 19th century desk features its original brass Eastlake hardware with the key working all the locks on the drawers. The large flat desk top has vintage green felt on the writing surface with a center drawer below with divided compartments and four locking drawers on each side of the knee hole area. This desk is equally lovely on all of its sides so therefore could be a free standing desk in the middle of a room or office. This rare Victorian walnut cylinder desk c1885 belonged to Connecticut Governor Henry Roberts B 1853 D 1929. Roberts became alderman of Hartford. Connecticut in 1897. He became a member of the Connecticut House of Representatives in 1899. He held that position till 1901. He also was a member of the Connecticut State Senate from 1901 to 1902. He became lieutenant governor of Connecticut in 1903. He held that position till 1905. He became the 44th Governor of Connecticut on January 4, 1905. Antique Traditional Rolltop Desk S Curve c1880 - 1910 - Oak - Museum Quality
This is the"holy grail" of oak rolltop desks according to my preferences. When you look at it. It's like looking into an old cathedral or old library. This is a truly stunning piece of art. Origins: My great grandfather established a retail business in Massachusetts in 1895 and the store survived three generations in the same location. When my father(third generation) closed the business in 1978, I(fourth generation) gathered up all of the treasures and had them painstakingly restored. Included was this desk, an 1800's brass National Bar Cash Register, a large Victorian Oak Book case and other pieces. The desk, when I got it had been painted green. The restorer, a master craftsman, E.P. Lavelle of Holyoke, MA took one year to completely restore this masterpiece. This is not your typical finish. The wood was stripped, the ... morepores were filled, the wood stained, then multiple coats of varnish/shellac? were applied, rubbed polished and caressed to perfection. Even the tambour strips were individually finished and then applied to new canvass to create the ultimate S roll top. The desk has been with my family for a hundred years and sad to say, I have no family that can take this heirloom. If you are a dealer with a good home in mind or a successful executive looking for a great traditional desk- this item is for you. Recently, the last ten years, this item has been in storage. I have a crate for the top and the bases were wrapped in soft material and then padded with bubble wrap. It took me the better part of the day to put it back together for the photos and it has a fresh coat of paste wax. There is a small brass plaque with my grandfather's name, restorer and my name on the panel to the rear- facing the front of this unit. very very heavy- has been in storage for approx. 18 years must have been taken apart before moving into storage- 4 main pieces(2 ends with drawers. Wood top and custom 1/2 thick curved edges glass top) the center drawer and front cover piece for the center drawer are not connected- it seems all wood pieces and hardware(screws) are there but cannot guarantee. hand carved floral design drawer pulls has worn areas along bottom edges most likely from chairs/feet rubbing along bottom has scratches. About the item: Fine quality antique large 19th century oak partners desk. C1880.It is a great size and proportion and is a very decorative and functional piece of furniture. The desk is intricately carved in the Gothic/Green man style with lion masks and scrolling foliage etc. It stands on lovely bobbin turned supports,has 3 single and one double drawer and a leather top which is edged with nice scrolled carving. It has great colour/patina and has aged beautifully with only minor surface wear/marks.
