It has the original heavy bold brass hardware, and is in really nice shape. The pull-out writing surface has green felt on it. Antique Late 19th Century Walnut Secretary Desk Original Hardware England
This antique secretary in solid walnut and burled walnut veneers came to us from England c1880. It is in beautiful condition and boasts three adjustable shelves(spaced at 2 ½” apart) in the upper unit along with the original glass front doors. There is a key for the upper cabinet and it works in the lock. But the locking mechanism does not work(missing the catch) There are some surface scratches to the bottom of the upper cabinet and also to the writing surface. Solid brass teardrop knobs complete the drawers which vary in depth(top at 4 ¾” middle at 6 ½” and the bottom drawer at 8 ½” Drawer fronts are a burled walnut veneer in excellent condition. Overall height is 85 ½” and the bottom section is 36”w x 19 ¾”d with the pull down substantial writing surface at 35 ½”w x 23”d(there are narrow panels on either ... moreside of the lower unit that pull out and support the writing surface) There seems to be some very slight delamination of the burled walnut veneer on the pull down panel– this is not noticeable unless scrutinized up close and should probably be left as is(refer to photos) as it does not affect the integrity of the piece. There are some slots for mail and smaller drawers as well that have the original brass knobs. The upper section is 34 12”w x 9 ¾”d. It comes apart in two pieces for ease of transport. This is a nice antique 19th century Victorian era burl walnut cylinder/ roll secretary desk bookcase. In pretty nice shape as the pics show with various wear throughout like that shown from age and use and comes exactly as shown. It has a little tag on the piece that says"Best Wishes of Brothers Francis. John, George April 19th 1887" It measures 38" x 23 1/2" x 92 1/2" It comes in 3 pieces the lower section being one piece, the upper bookcase section being another and the crown on top. It has 3 shelves as shown and a little lever that tilts the writing section up so it's easier to write on the letter and the interior drawers are a bird's eye maple veneer. Offered for auction is this very nice circa 1870's-1880'sWalnut Victorian Eastlake style drop front secretary/bookcase. Top of secretary has a spindle like crown pediment over the glazed doors. Adjustable shelves for books or displaying glassware. This top part of the cabinet is removeable. The desk has a large carved design on the front of the fall front desk top and opens to reveal pigeon holes. Slots and two small drawers within the desk itself. The fall front provides a large writing surface. The desk portion sits over a full width single drawer with two half width drawers and a cupboard base w/ door underneath. All drawer fronts have applied rectangular panels with walnut burl veneer covering the entire panels. 1800's Walnut Cylindrical Roll Top Secretary Desk With Bookcase
This is a very unique. Historic, piece possibly involved in 1906 California earthquake. It is a tall, dark walnut cylinder or barrel roll top glider desk with burled walnut. Dating from 1800-1890- time period uncertain. The bookcase is a separate piece for moving around. There are three(3) shelves that adjust on wooden supports. The bookcase measures 43 5/8 inches tall, 31 inches side to side and 12 inches front to back. The bird's eye roll top desk measures about 30 inches high(will need to remeasure to be certain) 30 inches side to side. The writing area measures 29 1/2 inches wide and 9 3/4 inches from front to cubbies, 6 inches of well worn felt(front to back) that is 23 3/4 inches across. Inside the roll top are 4 cubbies(5 inches by 5 1/2 inches) and one larger cubbie measuring 8 1/2 inches height, and 9 1/2 inches from side to ... moreside. Key holes, but keys are not available. The hardware includes square nails. More pictures available to show the detail clearer) There are three drawers with large brass and ebony wood knobs. The top drawers has two dividers. It is 4 inches top to bottom. 14 1/2 inches front to back. The dividers measure 7 1/2 inches, a larger one in the middle- 13 1/2 inches and another 7 1/2 inches. The other two drawers are both 8 1/2 inches top to bottom. It has wheels and it is in overall good condition but does show some signs of age. HISTORY There is a lot of mystery surrounding this piece and there is still research being conducted. Some clues are a Bank of America envelope with a.03$ stamp on it. A San Diego State College Envelope, postcards from Pacific Novelty Company and a collection of black and white photos with people and landscapes of China town, the San Francisco Bay area, and other picturesque scenery along the Pacific coast. The piece definitely has an unusual energy and most likely was involved in a very serious earthquake because of psychic visions.

Two small interior desk drawers have small round nails, some interior scratches, hinges have been moved on the drop front desk lid, some missing burl veneer and splits on bottom corners of drop front lid, some missing burl veneer on bottom right, a small piece of wood missing on bottom left. The Victorian secretary is all walnut with burl walnut highlights. Incised design on drop front lid, original wavy glass, chamfered panels on interior of bottom doors, original chamfered panels for secretary back. The secretary measures 79" high, 48" wide, and 18" deep. This a very nice quality piece of early Victorian furniture worthy of repair. And priced reasonably. Incredible find.beautiful old Plantation Desk top. In lovely condition. Not abused, from a non-smoking home. Usually the only the bottom part of the plantation desks survive. But this complete top is in lovely, age-appropriate condition. I believe the wood is walnut with pine as a secondary wood. There is a top section that lifts that goes the entire away across with the molding. Revealing pigeon holes/cubbies. On either side of the piece are large doors.the left side has a grid of cubbies. The right side has horizontal dividers, with pretty ogee divider detail for vertical file storage. Four drawers with horizontal beaded details.they no longer have their pulls but move freely. An age-appropriate pull would be wood. So it should be easy to replace. The fold down writing surface has an older repair near the hinge areas on each side. This is a Victorian burl walnut butler’s secretary desk. Purchased from a local estate, this gorgeous solid black ... morewalnut butler’s bookcase desk is in original condition. All we did was polish it up, and some minor wear shows here and there in the finish, but it adds charm and character. We did replace the felt on the desk because it was in rough condition. This is called a butler’s desk because back in the old days, the butler was an important person in the household. He took care of the house, paid bills, and did all the food shopping. He would get the groceries, and he would make the list on this desk. It was also used as a dish cupboard in the dining room. This one has lots of burl on it, lots of rosettes, burl trim all over, and racetrack moldings on the doors, which retain their original brass hardware. The beautiful solid black walnut case has a carved crest on top, which is normally missing on these pieces. There is truly burl all over this piece: on the top, the face of the bookcase/china closet, rosettes and buttons. The handles and burl walnut on the drop down lid are unbelievable. Antique Traveler's Folding Walnut Writing Desk/ Box/ Secretary* All Original This is a late 19th century portable. Or traveling, writing desk. It is 13 3/4" wide, 8 3/4" deep when closed, and 4" high closed. It is made of nicely figured walnut with brass reinforcements. Everything is completely original. The exterior finish has very fine crazing which is not obvious- you must view it at an acute angle in the light- and VERY few of the minor marks these things usually pick up over a century. There is no real damage or dings. I do not have the key. The hinges are completely solid. The interior wood finish is in nearly the same condition but has about a half dozen wear spots. The velvet pad is original. It is split across the boxe's hinge but I believe it may have been made that way- there in no fraying- and the tab to ... morelift the bottom section is missing. The only real problem is that the velvet, which acts as the hinge for the two compartment lids, is loose from the frame of the box's lid as seen in the fourth pic; this is easily repaired. The compartments are clean and include the original dust. There are two ink bottles- one with its original pewter collar and lid and the other is missing the pewter pieces. The lid for the pen/pencil compartment has ink spilled on it(seen in the pics) but this should clean off if you know how to do that. The original glossy finish has been revarnished over the years and is very well preserved with enough wear for warm antique patina. There are stains. Mars at the edges, shrinkage separations from age and ink stains for character. Waxed and polished, only an occasional wipe with a soft dry cloth is needed to maintain its luster. We are pleased to be offering today this true Victorian burl walnut secretary bookcase desk that dates from the Eastlake era of the 1870s to 1880s. This desk is truly Eastlake as it has the circular dove tail that was used for a short period of time and really pin points the date range of the desk. It came out of a pretty nice estate on the east coast. It appears to have been refinished years ago in a medium walnut stain finish. It has all the hardware intact. All the burl walnut panels are intact. The only thing we did was replace the felt on the pull out tray as the other one was stained. The desk comes with the original wavy glass on the bookcase glass doors top. Three adjustable shelves that appear to be true original shelves, the doors have burl panels on all four sides with ... morerosette covers and even comes with a key. It has a crown molded top, beautiful burl walnut center and the pull tray. The base cabinet sports three graduated drawers with the circular round Eastlake dove tail and carved columns coming down both sides and lots of burl walnut. The overall size is 40 inches at the widest point, 23 inches deep, 31 inches high to the writing surface and 87 inches high overall. One thing I would like to add is that these desks usually have white wood sides or non walnut sides, but this one is truly all walnut as you can see in the numerous pictures. The original backboards are all in place. The desk is a nice original desk. The more I look at it, it appears like they just put a clear coat of shellac on it to brighten it up back years ago.
