Leather writing surface measures 13" x 10 1/2" One side of the writing surface is spring-loaded for opening. It appears to have been repaired at some point. top can be opened with a small screwdriver inserted and sliding sideways from left to right. The second side opens easily with a fingernail. Revealing a second wood panel. This second panel is removable by pulling up the small side wall that houses the inkwell. This action releases the wood panel below& within there are two secret compartment drawers. These hidden drawers are seen in photos. One brass inlay is missing at one bottom corner. No key. There is some staining. And a few minor rips to the black and blue velvet on the inside. There is scuffing and scratching on the bottom. An amazing. Substantial piece weighing twenty-eight pounds. This is a wonderful and hard to find original Chinese portable desk. Many people do not know to this day that there were compartments to these desks that did not divulge themselves to the average person. In fact. We are not certain we have found them all so a buyer might want to examine it more closely. Forgive us but we are considerably busier than we anticipated in selling our collection for retirement. The desk we were told through the estate from which it was acquired was used down through several generations. It could use some touch up work here and there that while showing its heavy and continuous use also displays the fact it is genuinely very old. However. We chose to use it as it is— more for display purposes than use. The multitude of mother of pearl inlay work diffuses the appearance of bumps and chips. In looking at the photo of the open position with the green blotter, you can then move to another photo that shows the top green top can be lowered to reveal a hidden compartment across the top which has a some lovely M-O-P flowers on green leaved branches. Further. The photographer found a drawer that opens from the left side and runs along the bottom. When it is pulled out, it can keep a large number of items. The whole piece can use a good cleaning- a task that the buyer will have to decide upon doing or not. Qing Dynasty Court Hat with finial and Fitted Hatbox including secret compartments. Condition as shown in pictures: Outer box material has some wear and is a little dull. However bottom of box is in good condition with only minor wear. S ome water damage. Signs of age and wear on pink silk in box where there is overall fading. Some disintegration of silk. Secret compartment silk is bright and has no fading as has the bottom of the middle section which is enclosed in false or secret bottom of box. Consisting of 4 pieces: HAT: Hat with gilded metal finial. Bottom of finial retains gold colour but top is dull. Red cords cover the the hat. Rim has a black cord and then constrasting chinese character type material edge. Inside red silk lining has a slight floral like pattern. In between the outer material and inner silk there seems to be a very ... morefine paper layer and also maybe one of two other layers. I can see a cane layer which is in a criss cross diamond like pattern a few layers in where the silk and paper have come away a little. LID: Lid which has chinese characters(writing) on the small top. Inside of top has cavity for egrit plume which is missing. MIDDLE SECTION: Middle piece which has the hat ring. Underneath is chinese(mandarin? writing in two places. BOTTOM SECTION: Bottom piece of hatbox includes fitted five secret compartments which would probably have held a box in the middle for the plume. Inside silk lining is pink. Inlaid Wooden Box W/Multable Secret Compartments
I don't know how old this box is but I'm guessing early 1800's or older. It's construction shows that it was hand made and has multible secret compartments some of which are pictured. Over all size is 12" wide. 7 1/2" high and 8 1/4 deep. It has all it's hardware and appears to be original including the lock and key. Over all conditon is very nice for it's age however it does have some flaws. One compartment on the inside is missing it's lid. The top lid and inside hinge covers need to be reattached. Box measures 1 1/2"4 1/2"H x 13 5/8"W x 18 1/2"D. Leather writing surface measures 13" x 10 1/2" One side of the writing surface is spring-loaded for opening. It appears to have been repaired at some point. top can be opened with a small screwdriver inserted and sliding sideways from left to right. The second side opens easily with a fingernail. Designed to withstand military campaigns and travel. The box has drop down carrying handles on the two sides which are the early form of handle. There is a side drawer which pulls out when a brass pin is pulled out with the box in the open position. The top has two brass inserts designed to receive a reading stand which is not with the desk. Antique Brass Peacock with secret compartments
This Brass item is a real beauty. It caught my eye when I first saw it and started asking around the Shop to see if anyone could tell me what it was. No one at the place seemed to know. I really liked the look and feel of it so I bought it anyway. I did some research to see what I could find out and found that it was made in India and found that by unscrewing the center Peacock each of the smaller birds opened to reveal a secret compartment. It is what they refer to as a KumKum Box that was used to hold Saffron and other colorful powders used in ceremonial beauty rituals. The legs are represented by one elephant leg and a small elephant head on top of each leg. The center Peacock is what locks the compartments. It measures 4 1/2" across and 4" at tallest point. Antique Gimmel Ring with 3 parts. Partly joined together and partly linked and locked. When locked, they form a single band with colette-set floral gemstones. Date: 15th- early 19th Century: These rings were made from the 15th century as engagement rings(see An Illustrated Dictionary of Jewelry) The table cut of the gemstones was the earliest form of gem-cutting known in Europe and hints at an early date. Materials: the ring is made of gold and gemstones. The gold acid tests between 14 and 18k. The gems are not diamond or paste. According to our Presidium gem tester. Florida from a single piece of Eastern Red Cedar driftwood or old dead standing cedar. Dried thoroughly and then precision crafted to hide it's true purpose- hidden compartments. Can be used for decorative purposes. and for hiding precious trinkets, money, and/or jewelry. Crafted in 1985(30 years ago) and finished with a semi-flat laquer finish. It has 3 hidden compartments, each lined with a plush red velvet like material. The bottom has a protective brown felt cover with a sticker with the number 2334 stuck to it. It stands a full 7 inches tall and is around 5-1/2 inches in diameter. You’ll see the tray with many figured wood lidded compartments, each having a tiny carved bone knob, but in order to lift it out you must remove a little curved tray between he front 2 compartments and slid the lock to release, but that’s not all. You must then lift out the front board which has ribbon tabs in order to lift out the tray. Under the tray is a large area for storing valuables. There is also a secret drawer in the bottom of the box that can only be slid forward from the bottom of the box. Someone tried to pry it out and chip the front lower corners, not bad& probably an easy fix. Both of the large compartments are lined in hand marbled paper and the sewing tools velvet tray is a later addition. The mirror ... moreshows just a little aging and the moulding around the mirror matches the exterior moulding. The keyhole has an bone escutcheon and the lock is in place. I have two hand carved wood trinket boxes up for auction. They were made by the late Gordon O'Bleness. One is an example of when he first started. And one is a wonderful show of how great he became at his wood working. Very rarely do you receive two boxes like this together. Highly collectible, especially now that he has pasted away. The first piece(but the last 3 pictures) is a small box. 3 1/2 inches in each direction. Has the puzzle piece stick to remove to allow the lid to come off, which also has two puzzle pieces carved into it. The lid is slightly thicker, and there are nice reinforcements in each side corner inside. There are beautiful swirls in the wood and this is a great piece by itself. Has his signature on the bottom along with the year 91' There is a little wear on this box. Has four pads on the bottom also. The second ... morebox is an absolutely exquisite trinket box. Very large.7-10 inches long. 5 3/4 inches wide and 4 inches tall. Signed by artist Gordon O'Bleness. After his name is written, Redwood 2000" All wood made of Redwood. Feels wonderful to the touch.all the natural curves and grooves of the Redwood. In it's natural state you can see so many swirls and designs in the wood.it is really hard to give up this piece of artwork! The lid has puzzle piece shapes to slide it off. And a puzzle stick to lock in the lid in place. Once you take that stick out and slide the top piece off then you reveal another top layer to pull off. Once that is off there is another stick to remove on the side. Then there are two pull out drawers on the sides which can be removed fully. Once those are taken out two more secret drawers are slid out from the sides of the drawer holes(last picture) One of those extra drawers looks like it had broken in the center and was glued.seems very solid now. That is the only damage I noticed. Back up in the top main compartment there are also two fake walls that slide up and reveal two more hiding places. This is such a stunning piece of artwork.
