Condition: Used Location: Fairfield, United States We are pleased to be offering today what I believe to be a bench made custom solid tiger sawn oak Chippendale raised panel all the way around cabriole ... moreleg flat top desk that dates from the 1890's. The desk comes with four raised panel dove tail drawers that retain all the original hardware. The center where the legs go have a reverse cove carving, which I have never seen in oak. It has a scallop bottom trim base, raised panels all the way around and a wide bevel edge on the solid tiger sawn oak top. The only negatives I see on the desk is that there is a little wear on the edge of the top from rubbing against something and there is a split going down the center of the top. We most likely could pull the top off and repair the top, which wouldn’t make a huge difference, but it is an expensive repair. The desk itself is high end quality.

It has 3 hidden compartments and lots of pigeon holes and small drawers. It comes with the keys for the upper hutch. The fold down desk and the small door inside but not the drawers below. It has the original glass, which is wavy and has bubbles in it, in both panels on the left side but not on the right side. One pane is missing on the right side but would be easy enough to replace. Lots of character on this gorgeous old piece. It measures 81 inches high, 47 inches wide and is 23-1/2 inches deep at the bottom. It comes apart in two pieces so the bottom part is 41-1/2 inches high, 47 wide and 23-1/2 deep and the top part is 39-1/2 inches high, 47 inches wide and 12 inches deep. American Chippendale (1910-1920) Ladies Writing Desk and Matching Chair
This American Chippendale Ladies Writing Desk is elegant in every detail. It has North wind Lion motif on all five of the drawer handles and on the sides of the curvilinear legs. The legs extend gracefully down into traditional claw and balls on the floor. Ii is deep relief carved on all surfaces. The upper desk surface has an exquisite mahogany top outlined with an even more beautiful burl mahogany border. There five fitted drawers that open from the front and there are two vanity drawers that open from the top of the desk. There is a curvilinear banded border around the entire top of the desk with extends 1/2” This gorgeous piece was made Circa 1910 to 1920. The desk measures 38” wide by 23” deep X 34.5” tall. Florida. This is originally from the est ate of Howard Frankland- Tampa Businessman who proposed the bridge named after him between Tampa and St. Petersburg. If it is needed I can find the original buyer of the estate years ago but doubt I can find the relative who sold the house contents out. Size of this desk is as follows: Height 44 1/2 inches Depth 17 inches. Base is 41 inches by 17 inches. Top of desk is 7 inches. Top of desk has a light spot from water from a flower vase staining the wood light. Drawer sizes are staggered: 1st drawer is 4 1/2 inches height. 2nd drawer is 5 1/2 inches height. 3rd drawer 6 1/4 inches height. 4th drawer 7 1/4 inches ... moreheight, I did not measure the drop down lid or the cubby holes or the little drawers. measurements are pretty close with a ruler. I have been to a furniture refinisher who has dealt in early furniture for 50 years and the desk is cherry with poplar secondary wood. Meaning the drawer sides and bottoms of the drawers. The bottom of the desk or base board underneath with the dovetails extended through is pine. The brasses are later and one is missing on the bottom drawer. The period is 1840-60s. The photos were taken on a cloudy day with a flash and some look dark but it is a reddish color. There are a lot of square nails in the back some appear square some are round. The bottom underneath has square nails. Almost everything is dovetailed but the back boards. The foot is called a bracket foot. There is a crack in the top right side of the slant front. The desk was originally used by another business man also. The next owner was a business man also and the last user was a nice teenage daughter and has powder and dust in the cubby holes from makeup and play toys stored in all the neat drawers and the dresser drawers as well. This baby has crisp carvings and intricate construction. It stands on four high beautifully curved and carved legs, ending in ball and claw foot. Front lid carved to the max opens up and sets on the support slides that pull out on ends. This antique writing desk I believe it is from the very early 1800’s. There are some unique things that I think make the desk. I have the invoice From B. Manheim( The Antique Treasure House of The South) New Orleans. La. Sold to Mrs. Robert K. Drew Milwaukee Journal Co. 7/13/ 1964. Georgian Lap Desk 125.00 Chippendale style legs 50.00. Also there are small notes to show the buyer how to open things. So the buyer bought this 50 years ago. This I think is mahogany and inlayed brass with lock( I do not have the key) There are hidden drawers that many of these had but this one has a built in tee handle key to actually bolt it to a table with built in screws. I tried to picture these) I am not sure if the ink well is original but it had come with it 50 years ago. The outside has tempered to a light golden color and the top has some stains. I have never tried to recondition it as to me it enhances the antique look of the piece. It measures 16” wide by 12” front to back and is about 6 ½” deep. The Chippendale style legs are floor to bottom of desk 14 ½” So together it stands about 20” tall. This is an amazing Slant top secretary writing desk in great condition! It is antique white painted over genuine mahogany and gold painted edges for added detail! This Chippendale secretary desk has such details and charm as well as quality made! The overall paint color is a creamy white and in some areas you see the mahogany showing thru. There is some very minor paint loss at the bottom and some around the edges but in think it adds additional character and charm to this piece! The hardware is an antique look and dark brown almost black in color. The drawers are dovetailed at the edges which is a stronger way to connect the ends together! The drawers slide out on the tracks very smoothly. It is a slant top and has supports once you open the top. AMERICAN CHIPPENDALE STYLE MAHOGANY DRESSING TABLE OR KNEEHOLE DESK An Exceptional Benchmade Work After the Boston Originals. Circa Fourth Quarter of the 19th Century Item# 1408AWV10S This is a wonderful find. Crafted entirely with period techniques, tools and fasteners during the Centennial era of the late 19th Century. It is one of the truest representations of the Boston Kneehole Desk we've seen from this era, the craftsmanship positively impeccable. The dense mahogany planks for the top and sides of the case present a marvelous display of swirling grains and symmetry. Likewise, the boards used for the drawers have a fine swirling that augments the bow of each drawer to create a sense of greater bend and depth than actually present in the wood. The top is crafted of two planks of mahogany thumb molded of the solid, conforming to the ... morecase and projecting softly over all three sides- it affixes to the case by sliding onto dovetails along the sides, allowing the top to expand and contract over time without threat of splitting. The front of the desk features a broad single drawer over three graduated drawers on either side, flanking a single hidden drawer over the tombstone kneehole door. All drawers are crafted with great skill, the dovetails precise and perfect at each joint, the bottoms set perpendicular to the frame and affixed with tacks around all edges beneath applied runners on the sides. They retain their original hardware and working locks. The drawer bottoms, like much of the desk, are sawn by hand and lightly planed by hand- the kerf marks of the uneven saw are evident throughout these secondary surfaces. The feet are untouched and entirely original, the blocking still intact and in place other than a single missing corner block. An original Boston Kneehole desk would be beyond prohibitive in pricing- this fine object is as close to the original as is otherwise possible. Chippendale-style desk. Deep. Rich patina. Cherry front has turned a deeper brown due to age and oxidization. Appears to be mahogany on the sides. Four graduated drawers; interior has secret compartment. Hand dovetailed and planed. Ball& Claw feet likely replaced. We repaired the front piece of both support rails using an antique restorer. The piece was purchased at an Eastern Shore auction many years ago. It has been in a non-smoking home with other fine antiques. Although I have specified that this is for local pick-up. AMERICAN CHIPPENDALE WALNUT SLANT FRONT DESK. PENNSYLVANIA Probably Chester County. Signed illegibly four times and dated 1807 Item# 411IQL13P This fine example of Eastern Pennsylvania craftsmanship. Almost certainly originating in Chester County, has a distinct air of ingenuity about it. A departure from the typical corinthian fluted corner columns seen on these cases, the desk employs a quartered column with three graduated divisions of double-ringing in completion of the drawer blades they flank. This effective treatment softens the facade and introduces a certain magnetic rural character to the form. The interior is exceptional. The deep writing surface edged by a scalloped molding conforming with the serpentine of the ten blocked front drawers beneath ten pigeon holes. Instead of employing a prospect door, the center of the interior ... moreis a complicated little box that is easily drawn from the center- over the pigeon holes in this box, the valance actually is a tiny hidden drawer. By removing the entire dovetailed box from the interior, a previously hidden document drawer becomes visible. On the front it is signed illegibly"J. Sh.f.p Rat. 1807" the same signature seen also on the two hidden document drawers that flank this drawer and the two hidden document drawers that flank these as well- to bring out the deepest document drawers, a long string is attached and can be tugged to bring these unseen pieces forward. The front of the desk is composed of a pair of lopers. The fronts of which are set on tiny dovetails and sunk into the blades, and four graduated drawers retaining their original locks and untouched structure with replaced brasses. The top and bottom of the case are openly dovetailed, the back of the case with untouched half-lapped planks retaining their original rosehead and cut nails and a nearly black level of oxidization throughout.
