This beautiful table features an ogee bevel edge, round corner top, and is all tiger sawn oak with a large dove tail drawer in the front. It has cabriole legs that come down into a bottom shelf support and terminate in a detail toenail claw foot. The desk is 38 inches wide, 26 inches deep and 29.75 inches high. Antique French Renaissance Revival Library Walnut Table Desk 1800's
This is a genuine solid walnut library table desk with a walnut veneer top. It was made between 1850-1899. And was used in the Druillard Library of Madison, Tn. I know the history of this library and of this desk because 4 generations of my family went to this school. This library was part of a private church school where you could start out in diapers in the nursery school building and continue through all of elementary, junior high,high school and 4 years of college in one school. The library was shared by all. It got the name Druillard from a lady whose name was Charlotte Druillard, who gave the money to the school for the library to built close to the turn of the last century-1900. She was the wife of the man who founded the famous Belmont College and University in Nashville. Both of my parents went to this school who met there and married. ... moreIn the mid 1970's the school thought the library building was too old and needed to be torn down. My father(who was very sentimental) purchased this table from the library. He immediately loaned it to the school alumni association to place in their entry way. It remained there until Oct.1985, when after my father's death, my mother asked for it back. She gave it to me for my home. I have used it as a desk in my home since 1985. It has been well taken care of and is in excellent condition. A quality made piece with two drawers across the front. Not a lot of wood carvings, but a beautiful design though a more simple elegant piece to look at that is also very practical. Large in scale and has a variety of potential uses. The measurements are: 54 1/2"long x 32" wide x 28" high. It is finished on all sides so it can be placed in the center of a room.There are two dovetailed drawers that go across the front of the table, that slide in and out easily. It is an English antique that was originally made around 1890 featuring barley twist legs and stretcher. It is hard to believe all of the wonderful carved features in this writing desk. Each of the four sides is meticulously carved to great detail. These carvings are the most prominent feature of ... morethe desk. The next thing your eye is drawn to are the barley twist turned legs and stretcher. Using a stretcher between the legs allows the heavy desk to remain sturdy even after all these years. The table top is finished with a nice black leather that has gold tooling. This leather is not the original desk leather. The front of the desk has two drawers that work easily. Their handles are part of the carvings on the drawer fronts. The fully finished and carved back has two faux drawers so it looks just like the front. This antique writing desk is really in excellent condition. It is sturdy and strong and we did not find any repairs or breaks on the carvings. The black leather is near perfect. The table top around the edges shows some old minor signs of wear(tiny dents here and there as you would expect to see) Otherwise this desk has stood the test of time remarkably well and would go great in a variety of surroundings. LOCAL PICK-UP ONLY* Up for sale is this beautiful old library table or writing desk made out of quarter-sawn. Or quarter-cut white oak. The wood is cut in such a way to reveal the large flaking pattern found in white oak(Quercus alba) that has been quarter sawn. Once stained, the wood has a rich golden color as seen in the photos. The table measures about 26 inches wide, 42 inches long, and stands about 30 inches tall. There is a drawer on one side and a shelf across the bottom. There is a burn mark along the edge as shown in the 5th photo, but otherwise the table is in good condition for its age. The inside of the drawer seems to have been replaced with some plywood at some point in time. The drawer doesn't slide smoothly, but may be an easy fix.
