The top rolls over the open desk and locks with a key; doing so also locks the top drawer as well. The lock is made by CCL(Corbin Cabinet Lock) they've been around since the 1800's. It is a two piece unit; the roll top desk area can be separated simply by lifting it from it's base(drawer area) It's also easy to move around due to base mounted wheels. There are far more than enough'cubbyholes' for all your knickknacks; including three rarely found vertical side slots(1@ 17" 2@ 8 1/2" There are two small drawers and dual pen holders in this area as well(see photos) The desk top surface area has wooden bumper guards at both sides. The base leg/feet area is of a'closed architecture' type(as opposed to ... morean open back style; see photos) and sports 8 drawers with 2 hidden sleeves on either side that you pull to extend(~18" The desk top itself has various glass/cup ring stains(see photos) There is a two piece spring loaded internal mechanism which serves to prevent the top from moving around. One of these pieces has come loose(part is included) and looks to be fairly easy to repair. Even still. It's function is basically unnecessary, due to the weight of the roll top(it won't be moving/sliding around) Being internal, this mishap is entirely hidden from any viewpoint angle. One of the four wheels is missing. The framework of this wheel is still intact, but the'wheel' itself is not there. The other three wheels are fine; the desk can still be easily moved around by the remaining three. The only history on this desk that I could dig up was from the previous owners that say it was owned by their friends Great Grandfather; a North Carolina abolitionist politician who also apparently wrote books. Up for sale is a antique C roll top desk. It is paneled oak. It looks to still have it's original finish on it. This was shipped over from Europe years ago. The desk is 47 1/2inches wide,28 1/2inches deep and 43 1/4inches tall. The desk does show some damage and is dirty. It has some cigarette burns on the flat pull outs on the one side. It also has damage from the key being lost and someone using a screwdriver to pry it open. Some other minor dings and scratches. Here is an awesome rolltop desk that is about 100 years old. $695 or best offer. The photos show the desk utilized as an electronic device station. Very cool. The back and sides are gorgeously paneled. Too. Needless to say. It's not factory-fresh. Sold as is. My own Dad bought it in about 1953 from a pharmacist William Votteler in Louisville. This postmaster's desk was created by Standard Furniture Co. of Herkimer, NY. The chair was made by W.H. Gunlocke Chair Co. of Wayland, NY. Both are tiger oak, I believe. The desk is comprised of 4 sections: base. Top, cubbies and rolltop. There are some stains and scratches, but the desk is in incredible shape for its age. There are some pieces of veneer missing, but we have some of them. Two brass foot casings are missing in back, but we do have one of those, also. The desk has pullout panels left and right. It is finished on all sides, four cabriole legs, two front drawers with maple interiors. The maple cubbyhole has two flame birch veneered drawers, the interior back also of flame birch veneer. The roll is in working order, with the lock and key(Vetter Desk, Rochester, NY. It measures 3'9" 45" tall by 3'6" 42" wide by 2'6" 30" deep. The photographs must speak for themselves. I have limited knowledge in the world of Antiques. What I know. The desk is original. It has all its original hardware and drawers. The owner restored it himself. By restored he means that he merely cleaned it and then put the clear? finish on it. So this desk has never faded or worn. I love it and think it very special. Antique Traditional Rolltop Desk S Curve c1880 - 1910 - Oak - Museum Quality
This is the"holy grail" of oak rolltop desks according to my preferences. When you look at it. It's like looking into an old cathedral or old library. This is a truly stunning piece of art. Origins: My great grandfather established a retail business in Massachusetts in 1895 and the store survived three generations in the same location. When my father(third generation) closed the business in 1978, I(fourth generation) gathered up all of the treasures and had them painstakingly restored. Included was this desk, an 1800's brass National Bar Cash Register, a large Victorian Oak Book case and other pieces. The desk, when I got it had been painted green. The restorer, a master craftsman, E.P. Lavelle of Holyoke, MA took one year to completely restore this masterpiece. This is not your typical finish. The wood was stripped, the ... morepores were filled, the wood stained, then multiple coats of varnish/shellac? were applied, rubbed polished and caressed to perfection. Even the tambour strips were individually finished and then applied to new canvass to create the ultimate S roll top. The desk has been with my family for a hundred years and sad to say, I have no family that can take this heirloom. If you are a dealer with a good home in mind or a successful executive looking for a great traditional desk- this item is for you. Recently, the last ten years, this item has been in storage. I have a crate for the top and the bases were wrapped in soft material and then padded with bubble wrap. It took me the better part of the day to put it back together for the photos and it has a fresh coat of paste wax. There is a small brass plaque with my grandfather's name, restorer and my name on the panel to the rear- facing the front of this unit. The inside compartments move around and are not attached. The roll top lid which is actually more like a lever than rolling. Sticks some times. There is wear to the wood, nicks etc. as can be expected with an antique piece. I believe the wood is maple but I am not sure. I was told that this is antique circa 1880's to 1890's writing desk or secreta riat and I bought it from a high end east coast estate. If anyone knows more please let us know-wood. Selling a very nice SMALL SCALE c 1880 American made antique oak roll top desk in the original finish. The desk has paneled sides and is extremely well made. The drawers are all dovetailed which is the finest drawer construction. This handy roll top/ tambour desk is the smaller version of the huge roll top desks you see in old offices and Victorian libraries. This nice example is without the drawers on the left side which makes it more practical for smaller spaces; it measures 34 inches wide by 43 inches high by 25 3/4 inches deep. Some people call this a"lady's roll top" because of the diminutive size. There are plenty of cubbies for storing all your love letters. Bills, death threats or whatever. There is a"magic" latch which keeps the top drawer locked unless you know the secret. BUY THE DESK, WE DISCLOSE THE SECRET ... moreTO OPENING THE LOCKED TOP DRAWER. The roll top/ tambour portion is in good shape and rolls easily open or shut. This wonderful antique roll top desk retains the original finish. THIS IS EASY TO MOVE BECAUSE THE ROLL TOP PORTION LIFTS OFF AND THE BASE, HAVING ONLY DRAWERS ON ONE SIDE IS NOT REAL HEAVY, TWO PEOPLE CAN MOVE IT EASILY.
