Really don't know where to start with this Museum Quality Lovely Marketry Vitrine Secretary Desk but here goes: From our research in Miller's Antique Price Guide, it hails from Holland. Although this is not the Exact Piece of Furniture, the characteristics remain the same. We believe it to be made of Rosewood with hand Marketry inlay lighter colored wood. Antique Georgian Federal(?) Secretary Slant Front Desk Four Drawer Bureau 1840
Family lore has it that this was made in 1840 but I don't know for sure. This was my father's father and. Given to me but I'm headed to. South America and none of our children want it. All the drawers and top are joined. With dovetails at the corners. All the drawer bottoms have chamfered. Ends that fit into a tight track in the drawer. Sides. I'm guessing that drawer facewood. Is cherry(mahogany? and hinder parts of drawers made from boxwood. All the drawers fit precisely. The large drawers have grooves worn in them. From riding over guidance rails in the front of. The drawer entry points(see pics) It looks like. This was by design to accommodate the heavy. Drawers(which are prob mahogany. Not cherry) Veneer is poor in several areas. Esp the slope top front. The back view pic shows two arrows pointing out the width of a single ... moreboard which is a whopping 21 1/2 inches wide. Included in this pic at the bottom are shown. The three pieces of molding that need to be glued back onto the'ankles' The brass balls in the feet at each corner rotate. Here is an absolutely gorgeous antique mahogany desk with lovely burl mahogany veneer and border design inlay. Circa 1840 and American made. This slant front desk drawers. The desk stands 43 inches tall and measures 38 inches wide by 21 inches deep, front to back. The writing surface itself is 36 inches wide by 21 inches from front to back. The surface is beautiful and in very good condition. The inside of the desk also reveals 16 small drawers and an additional cubby with lovely inlay door as shown. Below the desk slant front. T here are four large drawers. Each 31 1/2 inches wide and 18 1/4 inches front to back and then 2 3/4, 3 3/4, 4 3/4 and 6 inches deep respectively, in descending order. This wonderful cabinet travels easily in two pieces and stands 68 1/2 inches tall by 42 1/2 inches wide and 20 inches deep front to back. The top ... morebookcase section measures 33 1/2 inches tall by 42 1/2 inches wide at the bonnet by 12 3/4 inches deep front to back. It has 12 panes of glass in it's upper cabinet doors and three small drawers run across the bottom within the top cabinet just below the two display shelves. The bottom bureau section measures 36 inches tall with a 35 inch tall flat surface height when the desk is closed and a 3/4 inch recessed space along the back for the upper bookcase to rest in. The base is 42 1/2 inches wide and 20 inches deep front to back and had three drawers. Inside the top bookcase the cabinet measures 25 1/2 inches wide by 8 1/2 inches deep and 28 inches tall. Replaced back feet Sturdy Very good overall condition, This antique bureau desk was hand-crafted in Victorian England around the year 1860. Today the antique mahogany remains as beautiful as ever. With a rich complexion and a striking grain. Satinwood string inlays and flame mahogany crossbanding adorn the fall, providing a lovely contrast. Each drawer features ... morehand-cut dovetails and solid brass pulls(recently replaced) The brass escutcheons. While quite attractive, no longer house functioning locks except on the fall which does lock and includes a key. Each side has a horizontal line where the piece was obviously cut in half to remove from a home and put back together. These lines are purely cosmetic and don’t affect the structural integrity of the piece. During a past restoration, a line of black stain was applied to these separations to complement the actual dark inlay around the bottom. Inside the bureau desk part is a very nice mahogany work surface that measures 37″ wide x 22″ deep x 31.5″ from the floor. There are three small drawers and eight nooks for storing as well. When closed. The fall does not completely close(there are small gaps on either side) but does lock. All of the drawers open and close easily. You will see from the pictures that they do not close flush to the bureau, as we often see with solid wood antiques. Finally there are a number of minor wear marks throughout and the back feet were also replaced during the previous restoration.
