This is a Mid 19th Century Napoleon III Boulle Bureau Plat(Bureauplat) Better yet Bronze Mounted Tortoise and Scrolling Brass Inlaid Leather Top Desk. This work of art can still be used for the purpose it was made for, however it is an eye candy with a writting surface covered in original dark(navy) blue Moroccan tooled leather(gold edges) wich has darkened with age to almost black appearance. Quality of bronze mounts is a 10+. They are classic French III Empire mounts, on the edges with saboes on the bottom. Cabriole legs matching in front and back, flanking a single drawer. Greatest feature of this desk is in it's inlay which carries many different prescious stones and metals, you will see in the photos(lapis, etc) There are areas of inlay where metal is other than brass, ... moresome silver in nature as well as copper. Hidden compartment for inks and quills and slide out candle shelves. The top lifts to reveal a storage area with fake drawers with little ivory knobs. A lovely carved molding is around the bottom of the desk. Fully turned columns with carved capitals support the desk. Beautifully carved corner brackets can be found under each corner. 1860's Flame Mahogany Late American Empire Desk with Carved Corner Columns and Feet This estate item is ready to use as is. It has beautifully carved front corner columns and feet. The inner desk case and all drawers are dovetailed construction. The front dovetails of the drawers have been bulked up with added strips of wood that cover them up. but they are there! The back corners of the drawers are dovetailed as well. I pulled the inner case out so you can see the construction. Also there is rough cut wood on all drawer bottoms and back of inner case. The plinth column bases are connected by four serpentine stretchers to a center oval with footrest. The case sides and front drawer have ormolu brass mounts with swords, wreaths, rosettes, anf palmettes. The drawer handles have rosettes. Desk measures 30-3/4" tall by 48" wide by 29-1/2" deep. The distance from bottom of drawer to floor is 24" Very good plus condition: mahogany boards without chips or cracks, original glossy finish. All five drawers are hand dovetailed oak secondary woods with a chamfered bottom set in grooves on either side and nailed(modern nail) along the back edge for stability. The writing surface is clean and remains in fine condition with a replaced leather top; the surface is probably not ideal for functional use, as the weight of arms and leaning would not be healthy for the long term preservation of the desk, but it is very much a stable and strong surface for presentation. Above the surface is a broad single drawer. Tucked beneath the mahogany top and flanked by beautiful round columns and seven-pointed stars on either corner. This drawer, as well as the drawer beneath the writing surface, is constructed in a manner identical to the interior drawers. The whole of the desk is raised on a pair of thick tapered mahogany columns with pressed brass rings capping and footing the columns; these are exceptionally well detailed with a series of impressed stars and foliage over the checkered cylinder. Circa 1830s/1840s Mahogany Secretary Abbatant- Excellent Condition. This particular Secretary Abbatant belonged to Governor William J. Northen and was used in the executive mansion while he served as Governor of Georgia from 1890- 1894. Comes with a skeleton key and working lock. A 1950 will and codicil from Northen's grandson. George Northen, accompanies the desk to serve as proof of its former owner. The codicil in George's handwriting specifically states"I bequeth my Grandfather's mahogany desk pull down front, used in the executive's residence[Governor's mansion] during his administration until his death. Also included in this auction is a 1938 copy of George's tax return and a 1937 list of personal property of Ruth Northen(George's older sister) which lists the desk. Also. It has hand cut dovetails in the drawer and a carved style border around the skirt. It measures 30 1/4" tall. 42 1/4" wide, and 24" deep. It is sturdy and in good condition. This 19th century secretary is positively a sweet Empire piece with all the design elements of a larger desk but a smaller size. This desk features its working locks with a tasseled key that works the locks on the bookcase top and the cabinet at the base. The bookcase top has three original shelves for display and appears to have its old glass. The fold out desk portion reveals the writing surface and the desk cubbies at the back.
