This is a wonderful size desk that could be easily utilized in most any room of your home. This desk offers splendid incised carvings on each side. Applied carved buttons on the top and sides and lovely gingerbread carvings below the top shelf and the inside desk area, and with what we believe to be the original brass hardware. This desk measures 47 inches in height.26 inches wide,17 inches deep and the deepest portion and weighs approximately 50 lbs. The inside writing desk area measures 24 1/2 inches wide,19 inches deep and 29 inches in height to the floor when opened. The original owner(1866-1936) was wheelchair-bound. So this desk was well used and loved. It has remained in the same family ever since. The box measures 15" wide, 10½" deep, and 5½" tall(I believe this is large for a writing box of this age) You must look at the photographs to appreciate the beauty of this piece! The top is adorn with delicate designs. Separated by thin strips of metal. Gold gilding, mother-of-pearl, and various shades of inlaid wood make up the floral/vine-like center and the borders around it. Even the ... moretop's edges feature a gold& mother-of-pearl star design. There is a diamond-shaped brass plate around the key hole; the original key is included and still works to lock& unlock the box! There is also an inlaid brass notch on the box's top to lift the lid with ease. Amazing craftsmanship! The box has a hinged lid and opens fully to reveal a rich purple velvet-covered inclined surface. The purple is now faded around the edges with age(as you can see in the photos) There are five cubbyholes. One of which is rectangular(with a lid) to accommodate pens/pencils; and four square cubbies perfectly sized for the two ink bottles(included, although one is missing the cap) as well as other writing supplies. Other features include a spacious storage area in the base for paper or small books This is opened by the pull of a green ribbon(now faded) And last(but not least) is a hard writing surface that flips down from the lid. This is a fantastic and rare early school desk. Much larger than most of those you see. It has an incredible patina, and the key is still in the lock-works, too. It comes with its own antique skeleton key stamped Germany on it to use to open all brass locking drawers and cabinet door. All drawers are connected and interlocked with dovetails and feature protruding wood dowels to stick out of the back interior of the drawers to catch the drawers from pulling all the way out. Please read what I stated below about this gorgeous European cabinet's condition: Overall stable intact cabinet that is heavy strong and sturdy. There are wood crack splits on both sides of the cabinet that do not harm its integrity and is still all together and solid. The top roof of the cabinet was missing exposing the drawer below. I believe this lap desk original came from SPAIN. This travel lap desk has been used through the years so there are expected signs of wear from normal use. The wood on the bottom has a split. I am sure not too difficult of a repair. The red cloth writing surface is worn and a bit soiled. The wood is overall nice but there are some minor scratches and scuffs from age and use. The paper labels on the inside have some additional writing not original to the labels. This desk measures 16" x 11 1/4" when opened and 8" x 11 1/4" when closed. This is a beautiful antique piece made of rosewood from circa 1840. Brass inlay on the top. Front and sides makes this piece very stunning and a great conversation piece.It comes with the original ink bottles, pen, and key. There are some small chips on the lips of the bottles but still in great condition for its age. ROLL TOP DESK - Derby Desk Boston USA - Tiger Oak W/ Key 1890's - S Roll
Derby Desk Company: George H. Derby opened a small furniture company in Boston in 1872. By 1879 he was producing roll-top desks. A partner joined him the following year and his business became Derby and Kilmer Desk Co. Then Derby, Kilmer and Pond Desk Co. In the mid 1890s, the firm was incorporated as the Derby Desk Co. Its headquarters were in Boston, but it had a large factory in Somerville, Mass. just outside of Boston. The company expanded across the country until it was bought by another firm in 1931. Derby roll-top desks sell for a few hundred dollars into the low thousands, depending on style and condition. This desk was inherited by us from my brother-in-law who was an avid antique collector. It was in his home for many. Many years. It was probably purchased on the Northern East Coast. I do not know what profession may have used this ... moredesk as it has many, many drawers and pigeon holes. It is in really nice. Original shape. It is a locking desk. We have the key! It also has what they call a"secret lock" which locks all the desk drawers below. Beautiful Tiger Oak S-Roll desk- has 31 drawers including two pencil drawers. Drawers are tilt-out type and regular drawers. Also has many pigeon holes. And a doored storage compartment in top section. Also has places for paper, etc. Bottom drawers with file drawer- also has two slide out writing areas. Roll top rolls fine. Desk surface is in nice condition. A little cleaning and it will be a gem. We are moving and cannot take it with us. There are a couple wood splits on a couple panels. And there is a small area about 1.5" on the top of the desk that the oak veneer is missing. Overall- the desk is in beautiful. Original condition. Nothing has been done to it that we know of- or since we've had it. It has been stored. Beautiful Mahogany Governor Winthrop Desk w/ Key - Sacks Furniture
I can't date this piece. But can tell you the hardware looks very old. The screws appear to me to be handmade. This was worked on, the handles are threaded with a very small bolt. I'm not an expert, but that does not seem as if it would be original to me. There are a couple small condition issues that I have to get photos of for interested buyer, but this is in great shape and a wonderful piece. Recently acquired it at an estate sale. Would make a great gift or keep it for yourself. The lap desk is probably English made. But that is just a guess, you be the judge. F or your consideration is this walnut antique lap desk in very nice condition. The walnut case has a great luster to it. What makes this piece really unique is the secret compartment with 3 small drawers. There is a board that runs the length of the case just under the inkwell and pen holder section. The secret compartment board still works. Just push down on right side and it springs out. All still there behind the secret panel and there are white bone knobs on each drawer. My guess is this ... morepieces dates to the early to mid 1800s. You be the judge before buying. This lap desk is beautiful with only small surface scratches. The corners have brass corner pieces. A small piece of veneer is missing on the right side of the top next to one of the back brass corner pieces. Very nice wood and graining. The inside folding pieces are still all there as well. The lock and latch is there and comes with a key that operates the lock. That does not happen very often with a piece of this one's age anymore. The top of the desk has a purple fabric on it which is hard and shows wear. Both sides of the lap desk open for storage. Has open areas for two ink bottles in the well areas. One on the left and one on the right. And a storage area for the pens that has a wood cover and a brass handle to remove it with nice detailing. Two other storage areas between the pen area and ink holder, one is missing the curved insert.The bottom of the base of the lap desk has a split across it. Cannot see if it goes all the way thru as there is felt on the bottom. The brass top piece is in place, cannot see any engraving on it and the brass piece around the lock keyhole is also in place. The desk bottom has a drawer& keyhole. The top portion sits on top and pulls down to reveal 3 draws. Pidgeon holes, storage spaces and file like compartments. The 3 drawers have keyhole locks on them. The pull down top also has a lock. The skeleton key comes with it and all the keyholes lock and work except for the pull down top. It seems stuck and I'd rather not mess with it for fear of breaking the key or the mechanism. Antique Asian Inlaid Lap Desk with Old Lock No Key Here is a great Antique Lap Writing Desk for your buying consideration. Recently acquired it at an estate sale. Would make a great gift or keep it for yourself. The lap desk is probably Asian made. But that is just a guess, you be the judge. F or your consideration is this Asian Antique lap desk in very nice condition. The wood case has a great luster to it. The veneer on top of the case shows some cracking. What makes this piece really unique is the great mother of pearl. Metal and wood inlay that it has on it. The case has some dings in it and some veneer chipped off. Some of theinlay is missing, but the desk still looks and shows well. There is also an old metal lock still on the top of the case. Unfortunately no key comes with the desk. My guess is this piece dates to the mid to late ... more1800s. You be the judge before buying. This lap desk is beautiful with only small surface scratches. The corners have brass corner pieces. A small piece of wood is missing on the left side where the secret drawer comes out. Very nice wood and graining. The inside folding pieces are still all there as well. The hinges are all there. The rod the goes thru one of the hinges is not and will need attention. The lock and latch and the brass piece around the key hole are there, the case did not come with a key. The top of the desk has a green felt fabric on it which shows wear. The pull is on the secret drawer to pull it out. The other side has the brackets to hold the pull, but the pull is not there. Both sides of the lap desk open for storage. Has open areas for two ink bottles in the well areas. One on the left and one on the right. And a storage area for pens that has a wood cover and a brass handle to remove it with nice detailing. The bottom of the case of the lap desk has green felt on it. I see no maker's mark on the lock mechanism. The two top covers that hinge out are still securely attached to the base of the case by their hinges. The lap desk measures 15-7/8" wide.

What makes this piece really unique is the secret slide drawer compartment at the bottom of the case. It can be opened by opening the case and then taking the brass rod out of the left side of the box that"locks" it in place. My guess is this piece dates to the mid to late 1800s. Moore. Which were the type used by Thomas Barton, and is most likely from his workshop. Hinges are dated sept. 27, 1843. Domed. Hinged wooden box has brass straps and key/lock. 6-1/2" high. 9-3/4" wide. felted bottom. Inside box is wooden compartments for letters. Antique 1800s Lap Desk Sturdy Solid Mahogany Campaign Style w/ Lock and Key
This solid wood lap desk was made to hold up to heavy use. Probably for a Military Officer. A Traveling Official, or a Businessman that required a durable portable desk. Closed it measured 15 in. by 10 in. and 6 in. high. When opened it had a 13 ½ in. 5 ¾ in. writing surface and with another flip of the top would become a 13 ½ in. by 13 ½ in. surface. Made with solid Mahogany using hand cut dovetailed joints, it has Brass Handles recessed into the sides. Overall condition is good with wood patches in the back and along the inside edge. At some time in the past the felt was replaced and the leather hinges on the interior compartments are torn with the felt now supporting the writing surface. The top has a tight age crack, the felt has a tiny hole, and the old finish shows marks, scuffs, and fine scratches. It is sturdy ... moreand ready for use. This is a gorgeous antique. Circa 1840 rosewood lap desk. Includes the key. 2 silver ink bottles, porcupine quill. There is brass inlay across the top and sides. Approx. Measurements: 13 7/8" x 9 1/4" x 4 5/8" There are six compartments on the inside: 2 for the silver ink bottles. 1 to hold items such as stamps. 1 for the porcupine quill. Which also has a lid. 1 which opens up to hold the stationary. 1 which opens up to hold the envelopes. There is a small crack across the top of the box but still in very good condition for its age. Brass Bound Walnut Lap Desk Good Interior Secret Drawers Key Mid 19th Century. The box measures 13 3/4 inches wide by 9 1/4 inches deep by 6 1/2 inches high. It retains almost all of the original finish and the brass has a dark patina. The leather on the writing surface looks original. The lock is a very old replacement. It is broken but still has a working key. The key will come inside the desk. I believe the desk is built with blind dovetails because if it were not it wouldn't be holding together so well. The secret drawers are below the little compartments along the front of the desk. The mechanism to unlock the drawers stll works very well. You just lift up on the section between the little compartments and the board hiding the drawers pops out revealing two drawers. Estate ~ 1800's Fold Open Wood Writing Desk 2 original INKWELLS & KEY
This lovely antique writing desk/lap desk opens to a good size piece with 2 writing flaps that lift to expose storage underneath. The velveteen like material looks original with some staining and soil. The hinges are nicely folding open and closing the desk this is a wedge writing box if you look at the side photo you can see the wedge shape so it unfolds on a slant. There is a small brass placque on the top which has not been monogrammed. This is an interesting piece measuring approx. 14" long x 9" x 4" high in the CLOSED position. Open this beauty up to expose the 2 original glass inkwells along with a small storage space that has a lift out lid. Sturdy construction. Pretty wood grain that looks like rosewood. A gorgeous piece that was well constructed during the 1800's complete with original key. The key locks and unlocks ... morethe desk but the key does not remove from the lock ~ take a look I am not an expert on items we sell. I will tell you what I see when I look at the item for names. There is one small sliver of missing wood on the front right side. Not scary but I want to point it out you can see these in the photo if you look closely. This could easily be hidden with some dark stain coloring to blend it in. Inside the upper lid has torn away from the fabric that hinges it. There is a small piece of newspaper attached to the underside of this lid regarding someone's wedding. A great keepsake box or writing box. Just think of the letters that were written on this during the 1800's. The glass inkwells are in very good condition with no cracks. No chips. The metal tops have dings from years of use. ANTIQUE WRITING DESK– NO RESERVE Acquired at an estate sale in Virginia is this antique wood folding lap writing desk. Unknown type of wood- does have a cedar smell on the inside. Inside in many areas written in pencil is dated information from the 1800’s. Some of the writing with signatures is faded and difficult to read. Some the years can be read are“June 1894” 465 letters” March 15& 16 1895” March( 17, 1877” and“July( 18, 1875” There is no structural damage to the box. There are no apparent breaks or repairs. Hinges are securely in place. Closed the desk measures 3 ¾ inches tall. 11 ¼ inches long and 7 ¾ inches wide. Open the desk measures 15-3/4 inches long. 11-1/4 inches wide and 1-1/4 inches to 2-1/2 inches tall(slopes up) Writing area has ink stains and is loose in one area– see photos. Glass inkwell without cap ... moreis included. Two pencils are also included. When the desk is closed the top has some marks/stains– I have not tried to clean these marks/stains. Key is included; unknown if this is the actual or original key. The key does work but at times it is difficult to unlock– I would not recommend locking the desk. There is a small chip on the keyhole where the shelf opens to expose the organizer part and the bottom door doesn't stay closed real well. But those are the only issues and the important parts are all in great shape. This has a small beveled mirror and ornate trim work. I believe the glass is the original glass because it has a look about it that does not compare to modern glass. It has a lift and slide piece of glass at top. Key holes. Pull down front. Compartments. Curves. Nice hardwood. I hope someone who appreciates the true beauty of antique furniture can make use of this for many years to come.
