Description: This listing is for a ... moreChippendale Period Slant Front Desk circa 1770-80. Salem Massachusetts, in the manner of John Chipman(b. 1746-1819) It features solid Cuban Mahogany case, each side crafted of a single solid plank, through-dovetailed at the top and dovetailed at the bottom. The slant front lid features an original keyhole escutcheon over what appears to be the original brass lock, falling onto arms that slide out with brass knobs- one original, the left one replaced. The open writing surface is clean, with what appear to be two original brass hinges, though curious patching is noted below flaking each hinge. Above the writing surface is a collection of nine small drawers, the centermost shell carved, each with brass knobs, below which a gallery of six pigeon holes rest in perfect symmetry. The case has four graduated drawers. Each of which feature period bail pull brass hardware flanking a replaced lock with original brass keyhole escutcheon. The drawers are hand dovetailed front and back, the front dovetails hidden behind applied cockbead molding. The drawers are yellow pine secondaries, the bottom being deeply chamfered along the perimeter to rabbet into the frame. They slide easily in and out of the case over replaced drawer runners, the drawer dividers running into the sides behind a mahogany facade, effectively hiding what are probably dovetail joints. The back of the case has all original backboards, though many nails are replaced. The molded apron features a carved shell drop down medallion in the center that mirrors the design of the middle drawer. The case rests over scroll cut bracket feet, each with an incredible flowing design in the manner of John Chipman. We do not believe the desk was executed in the shop of John Chipman. As his cases will typically feature exposed dovetail drawer dividers in the Newport manner, and the pidgeon-hole gallery will regularly featur

One of the most interesting thing about this desk is that in the upper corner of the right door there is a piece of paper taped inside that lists the presidents of the United States and has 24 of them with Woodrow Wilson being the last one and the date listed is 1893. This piece looks like perhaps the top may have been added later, not sure, and also where the slant top is looks like it was altered at one time as well. An amazing piece, all pegged. Antique Large Plantation Slant Top Desk 78" Wide
Item# ss031212 Antique Primitive Large Plantation Slant Top Desk- Beautiful Chestnut Wood in its natural finish. Fixed Slant Top with 2 drawers. Pulls on the draws are not original to the piece. But look very nice. Noticed the detail etching on the inside of the drawers on the skeleton key locking top plate. Approx age 130+ years old. Excuse the glare from the flash of the camera. Questions? please ask. Condition Report: Nice natural wood finish. Sturdy and solid. Normal Primitive natural wear from years of use. Antique 1800's Desk Walnut Slant Front Top Section Only or Countertop Original
Antique 1800's desk slant front top or possibly a counter top desk for a country store. Etc. I believe that it's all original with the original outside finish and interior light green paint. The wood is walnut, popular back in the old days. The early desk hardware is pictured in photos# 3 and# 8. As you can see it possibly is a desk that just sat on a counter, etc. because of the way it's not finished on bottom and not much of evidence of any nails or screws holding it on to a base, so possibly a complete unit in itself and all complete. Photo#9 shows the pencil or pen holder that extents the whole inside front. In photo#4 the hole for an early ink well can be seen. It measures about 26 inches wide, about 20 1\4 inches deep and about 8 1\2 inches high in back and about 6 1\2 inches high in front. Which makes me wonder if underneath the old, shabby-looking white paint, is the rest of the desk like this, or is it veneer or what is it? The drawers are painted on the outside, but inside are pine lined, which tells me that most likely the exterior is some sort of veneer. This piece came out of Denmark and dates from the 1840s to‘60s era. It’s a great period desk that someone decided to modernize in the shabby chic style many years ago with white paint and a gold border edge. The height to the writing lid, when opened, is 31 inches high, and gives you plenty of work space to write out checks for your antique purchases. The actual size of the desk, itself, is 48 inches wide, 22 inches deep, and 43 inches high. Antique Slant Top Teacher's Desk
Authentic slant top teacher's desk. Made from clear pine. Has a single wide drawer and cubby holes inside the slant top compartment. Dimensions: 31" wide. 21" deep, 34" tall This desk is typical of those used by teachers in one-room school houses in the 19th century. The outside of the desk has been refinished but the inside is in its original condition. The internal lock mechanism is missing. But the outside lock plate is still there. One hinge is also a little loose. As you would expect of a piece used in a schoolhouse, it has a few scuffs. However, these are part of the charm of the piece.

Old Slant Top 19th Century Oak Countinghouse Desk
Oak slant-top countinghouse or printer's desk. Late 19th century. Beautiful dark oak finish and wide grain to wood. Turned spindle legs. Rail and turned stiles on top. Two divided drawers with brass pulls. One drawer has a wooden escutcheon, but the other's is missing and damaged. Desk top does not lift. Including rail and stiles. Desk stands 59" tall(nearly 5' Height to desk top is 46" and clearance between bottom of desk and the ground is 36 1/2" Desk is 48" 4' wide and 29" deep. Drawers are each 4 1/2" tall and 20 1/2" wide and run the entire depth of the desk. Desk is in good condition. There is some wear and minor wear damage. However the piece is structurally sound. A couple of minor repairs have been made. One of the drawers has likely been repaired or replaced, since they have two ... moredifferent types of joints- one is a classic dovetail and the other is pictured. Family lore has it that this was made in 1840 but I don't know for sure. This was my father's father and. Given to me but I'm headed to. South America and none of our children want it. All the drawers and top are joined. With dovetails at the corners. All the drawer bottoms have chamfered. Ends that fit into a tight track in the drawer. Sides. I'm guessing that drawer facewood. Is cherry(mahogany? and hinder parts of drawers made from boxwood. All the drawers fit precisely. The large drawers have grooves worn in them. From riding over guidance rails in the front of. The drawer entry points(see pics) It looks like. This was by design to accommodate the heavy. Drawers(which are prob mahogany. Not cherry) Veneer is poor in several areas. Esp the slope top front. Antique Oak Slant Top 2-Level Desk c. Late 1800's Lift Top 2 Drawers Green Felt
Antique oak slant top desk. Slant top section lifts on brass H-hinges from the top providing an excellent storage space beneath. Secondary wood is pine. The flat side area has been covered in green felt and has two small drawers. Drawers are framed with molding and have decorative wooden pulls and sturdy dovetail joints. Wide turned legs complete the Victorian-era look of the desk. This desk dates from the late 1800's. Overall. The desk is in very good condition. There is a little bit of sagging in the middle of the desk, where the two sides join, which has caused some of the wood to separate. See picture. There is also a perfectly round hole in the back of the flat section where another back piece may have been attached at some point. There is some wear to the feet, corners and surfaces, which is to be expected on a piece this age. It ... morelooks as if someone has filled in most of the nail holes with wood filler at some point. Antique Wooden Slant Top Desk w/2 Inside Drawers
This antique wooden slant top desk opens up to reveal a storage area divided into compartments in the back. Two of which have drawers in them. The desk measures 33” wide. 23” deep and is 30 1/2” high in the front and 38 1/2” high in the back, including the back panel. It has a keyhole and some metal hardware inside but there is no key and the lid does not latch down. This desk most likely originated in the South. I do not know the age of the piece but would guess late 1800s? The inside compartments and drawers may have been added at a later date. It is not pine or oak but otherwise I am not sure what kind of wood it is made from. The outside has been stained at some point but the inside shows how light-colored the wood was originally. The piece is very sturdy and is in good condition. The finish shows its age. There are some minor scratches, ... morescuffs, etc. There are a couple of small age cracks in the lid. All of the drawers are inlaid with satinwood stringing, each drawer is hand dovetailed, the brass hardware pulls and escutcheons are original, the hidden drawer is shaped and in the interior section behind small door, bracket feet are original, secondary wood is pine and the back boards of pine are hand planed. The inner desk case and all drawers are dovetailed construction. The front dovetails of the drawers have been bulked up with added strips of wood that cover them up. but they are there! This is a very pretty ladies desk owned by the seller’s family for over 40 years. It has a low applied scroll-carved crest rail over the wide hinged curved slant front and cabriole legs. A fitted interior. Long curved front drawer and two smaller curved front drawers complement the design. Height at center back 42 5/8" Width of cabinet 27 1/2" Depth of cabinet 14 1/4" Width of legs 29 1/2" Depth of legs 16 3/8" The desk has some wear from years of use. Please review photos. Antique Slant Desk 1880 Primitive but Original Great piece very nice looking. Goes with primitive.Country, federal and early Armerican Décor. Nice slant desk for office-bedroom-foyer. Nice for young adult-child. Measures 25.5 by 25 and 32 inches high. Very old piece that has the wear from generation to generation. Overall sturdy and excellent original. Besides the age in the wood you can see some of the old original nails that were used during the 1800's. This was a desk that you would see furnished in a country farm house or rural area not an aristocratic rich family in the city so the desk would be handed down from generation to generation home to home so they would repair it as needed. Here is an absolutely gorgeous antique mahogany desk with lovely burl mahogany veneer and border design inlay. Circa 1840 and American made. This slant front desk drawers. The desk stands 43 inches tall and measures 38 inches wide by 21 inches deep, front to back. The writing surface itself is 36 inches wide by 21 inches from front to back. The surface is beautiful and in very good condition. The inside of the desk also reveals 16 small drawers and an additional cubby with lovely inlay door as shown. Below the desk slant front. T here are four large drawers. Each 31 1/2 inches wide and 18 1/4 inches front to back and then 2 3/4, 3 3/4, 4 3/4 and 6 inches deep respectively, in descending order. The dovetails are not hand cut and irregular. But are consistent. Online I found this description: A close inspection shows no irregular saw cuts or variation from a skilled craftsman, but rather a precise and identical manufactured machined joint. These machine-cut dovetails are as strong and long lasting as the hand-made joints, and became the standard of better American furniture ever since the late 1890's. So this desk may be very late 1800s or early 1900s. Another indication is that the back is not multiple boards. But appears to be an early plywood? There is a tiny hole drilled in the back where I think my dad had our phone(land line) cord come in so the phone could be in the desk. Regardless, it is a beautiful old desk. The desk, 36" wide and 20 1/2" deep, is probably cherry with secondary woods of pine and oak. The substantial desk has a false top drawer over two small drawers over two graduated drawers.the fitted interior has two drawers on each side with a door middle and carved dividers.there is a hidden drawer for valuables. The top is dovetailed and a ledge is attached to the slant lid, probably for writing purposes. The brasses appear to be original, as are the locks. There is a possibility that the top drawer has been modified to create the hidden space in the interior.I'm pretty sure that the pull-outs to hold the lid have been replaced. At least one of the boards ... moreon the back has been replaced. The desk is quite dark and may be the original finish that needs a good cleaning and polish. Several of the drawer bottoms have been repaired due to wear.the drawers work well. There is a fairly deep mark on the lower part of the lid and some cracks on the top. This is an estate piece that has come down through the family(important, American descendants)the name of the family will be revealed to the buyer with provenance going back to the grandmother. I am selling the desk for the family and took photos on the present site in"as is" condition with no cleaning or polishing. Primitive Original Antique Slant Top Shopkeeper's Desk Circa 1880-1900 Very old piece that shows the appropriate wear one would expect from a shopkeeper's desk. This piece was used both in an early drugstore and real estate office in Quogue. New York. It never had a base as it was always used on a counter. For an old piece, it is very sturdy and in very good condition. It has the original hinges and lock; there is no key. Desk measures about 30 inches wide. 28 inches from front to back, height of desk in back 10 inches, height at front is 7 inches. Some pictures show the desk on a base. Base is an optional purchase. Antique Carved Oak slant top desk dated around 1850
I am selling one of my family heirlooms. It has been in the family over 70 years. I am not sure of its origin or maker. It is heavily carved all over in great detail. It is gorgeous. The only problem I found was one of the hinges is in need of repair. I have tried to take good photos for you to see its condition. There are no visable nicks or pieces missing.
