VERY NICE ANTIQUE FOLD OUT WRITING SLOPE/ DESK- LATE 1800's? MAHOGANY? Up for sale is this very nice writing slope. We don't know the age of this item but it looks like it's from the late 1800's. It might be oak or mahogany. But whatever it is it's very nice. It has a little drawer below the writing slope area. The slope folds out and has a leather surface, this may have been replaced at some point. The hinges on the side also don't look original and were probably replaced. You can tell around the hinges where the wood failed and they replaced the hinges. The top flips up too to allow access to the slots for papers and envelopes that is in the back. Behind the writing slope is a wider area to hold other things. We've tried to show how the whole thing works in the first five pictures. The top has a lock but it doesn't ... morehave a key. The drawer has a lock on it and it does have the key as you can see in the pictures. It's very nicely done. The drawer is dovetail mortised on the sides. It's a very nice size and would be fairly portable if you needed it to be. It measures 14.5" W x 9.25" D x 10.25" H. The slope part is 13.75" H by 13.25" W. It weighs 9 lbs. Outstanding Victorian walnut cylinder desk. This intricately detailed piece has definite Eastlake influences including a decorative grid pattern that borders the panelled sides and back and elaborate scroll decoration below the writing surface. Cylinder top conceals pigeon holes and a pull-out writing surface covered in emerald green felt. Brass hinges. Diamond-shaped escutcheons and rosette-mounted bail handle drawer pulls. Antique Late 19th Century Walnut Secretary Desk Original Hardware England
This antique secretary in solid walnut and burled walnut veneers came to us from England c1880. It is in beautiful condition and boasts three adjustable shelves(spaced at 2 ½” apart) in the upper unit along with the original glass front doors. There is a key for the upper cabinet and it works in the lock. But the locking mechanism does not work(missing the catch) There are some surface scratches to the bottom of the upper cabinet and also to the writing surface. Solid brass teardrop knobs complete the drawers which vary in depth(top at 4 ¾” middle at 6 ½” and the bottom drawer at 8 ½” Drawer fronts are a burled walnut veneer in excellent condition. Overall height is 85 ½” and the bottom section is 36”w x 19 ¾”d with the pull down substantial writing surface at 35 ½”w x 23”d(there are narrow panels on either ... moreside of the lower unit that pull out and support the writing surface) There seems to be some very slight delamination of the burled walnut veneer on the pull down panel– this is not noticeable unless scrutinized up close and should probably be left as is(refer to photos) as it does not affect the integrity of the piece. The flat side area has been covered in green felt and has two small drawers. Drawers are framed with molding and have decorative wooden pulls and sturdy dovetail joints. Unique antique stand up American Walnut drafting desk. I purchased this desk 30 years ago and now no longer have a place for it. It came out of a beer brewery in Cincinnati Ohio. I estimate it to be over 130 years old. I was told it was 100 years old when I bought it. It is perfect for a stand up desk or for drafting blueprints. I also have a wooden screw stool which is correct height and can be purchased separately( stool is not an antique) Top does not lift but three drawers pull out. The whole top lifts off leg stand and held in place by balance and wooden pins.Two small nicks in surface which do not show on photo. I believe this lap desk original came from SPAIN. This travel lap desk has been used through the years so there are expected signs of wear from normal use. The wood on the bottom has a split. I am sure not too difficult of a repair. The red cloth writing surface is worn and a bit soiled. The wood is overall nice but there are some minor scratches and scuffs from age and use. English Mahogany Schoolmaster's Antique Desk w/ Slanted Leather Top Late 19th Century w/ Ebonized Reeded Legs in the George III Style Item# 130009FPX20 This is a just lovely English Antique Schoolmaster's desk. Crafted in the late 19th Century of solid mahogany, mahogany veneers and pine secondaries. The slanted top provides a fine writing surface, covered in a warm-khaki tone tooled leather; lifting over original brass hinges, the interior retains what is probably an original blue paper liner and reveals a large storage space. Every aspect of the top is crafted with dovetails, from the tiny inkwells to the joinery of the entire slant front portion of the desk. Two small hand dovetailed drawers retain their original stamped brass hardware, framed in ebonized stringer inlays and retaining the same light blue papered liner. The desk ... morerests over boldly reeded and ebonized legs that terminate simply in stumped toes. Simply gorgeous for anyone decorating their home and looking for a great form in the hallway or entry way. A highly unique side table for a living room or a small writing desk to actually use for work and storage, this is a wonderful selection. With a warm patina and mellowing of the mahogany surfaces, remaining in quite wonderful condition throughout, this is a piece you will cherish for a lifetime. It is possible the piece was originally crafted mostly during the early 19th Century and was re-fashioned slightly or at least restored during the late 19th Century- there is some curious work with the dowel restorations around the drawer blades. This is a original antique secretary desk. It is a beautiful piece and in nice condition considering it's age. The original company sticker is inside the bottom drawer. It is the Udell Works company. This company built furniture in Indiana and Chicago. At different times. The company existed from the late 1800's to the early 1900's. The wood grain is beautiful. It has a fold down top, two drawers, and space inside the fold down top for storage. There is a key hole lock but no key. The measurements are approximately 27-1/2 inches wide, 17 inches deep, and 41 inches high. When the fold down is open for writing, it extends another 13 inches, which makes a total depth approximately 30 inches when opened. There are some stains inside the desk and one of the drawers and some fading of the wood. The last owner appears to have been an Elizabeth M Updike. Recently acquired it at an estate sale. Would make a great gift or keep it for yourself. The lap desk is probably English made. But that is just a guess, you be the judge. F or your consideration is this walnut antique lap desk in very nice condition. The walnut case has a great luster to it. What makes this piece really unique is the secret slide drawer compartment. It can be opened by opening the case and then taking the brass rod out of the left side of the box that"locks" it in place. The previous owner was an Elizabeth M Updike from Princeton NY. The famous writer. John Updike, had a daughter named Elizabeth, ... morebut correspondence is too old to have been hers. Possibly and earlier family member as John was born in 1932. There are some wedding invitations from the early 1900s in this drawer, a letter that has Princeton 66 on it. Not sure if year, for 1966 or means something else. There is a letter to a Mr. E. M. Updike in the drawer as well from a Turnbull that accompanied a Liberty Bond Medal for WWI efforts in gather funds for the war effort(Princeton NJ Victory Liberty Loan Committee) It probably meant Mrs. but you know the government, they can't even get the sex of a party right in correspondence, eh? Another piece of paper with genealogical information on it talking about Updike's grandfather Samuel Montgomery(1816-1878) married to a Matilda Stockton. Also a mention of a Samuel Updike and his children in this same piece. Also correspondence to Elizabeth Updike in 1927 from Wm Ball& Sons in West Chester. PA. Price lists and pictures of hardware which me thinks was probably to address the missing handle on the one side of the lap desk. In the folded position. It measures 9 by 15 ¾ by 5 ½ inches tall. Around the ... moreoutside are rows of inlaid bone surrounding porcupine quills. In our close-up photographs, you will notice that there are a few quills missing from the cover. Also, many of the small white bone dots are missing. On the inside is a bag filled with these small bone pieces, but we only have four of the missing quills. Also on the inside are fitted compartments and small drawers, plus a ruler and a round dowel used for resting your wrist on when writing. One of the writing surfaces, which were held with leather hinges, has separated. The cover is beautifully inlaid with scrimshaw bone discs and exotic wood. This is about the last word on one of these short of a 17th Century Museum collection's piece. This has part of its late 19th century label showing it was made in Paris. This partial label still has identifying features as to its maker but we are buried in new estates. Putting fair prices on everything and vaulting to the next estate. Getting past that: This desk has very well defined fan carved shells, bust medallions ... moreand just dripping with ormolu. It has a hand tooled leather top. We are sorry and only see now that while reviewing one of our photographic work that the leather top was not cleaned. We can see a faint mark on the leather. No promises we can make that better but were sure we could clean this up much better. It's leather top is nicely varnished so we have to have one of our top people play around with it. For those of you who know us its no surprize we do this in a very big way and we know what we are doing. The desk has fine form standing on well defined cabriolet legs all mounted with ormolu running the the very ends of the legs. One side has two drawers and the partner's side has two faux drawers. Google North Adams/Hoosac Tunnel) This solid oak desk measures- 7 feet X 30 inches and stands 49 inches to the top of the border rail which is 3 inches with a 2 inch cap. The surface is slanted and the 2 1/2 inch drop/slope starts at 8 1/2 inches from front of desk and stops 21 inches down at a'pencil stop' piece of small well-rounded oak molding. The 4 drawers along the top are all 16 inches wide-3 deep and 23" long-one of them is a coin drawer*see photos) One side column consists of five 14 1/2 inch drawers all 5" deep and 23 long. The other column has a 24 inch'roll top' section X 14 wide followed by a bottom drawer also 5" deep and 23 long. It's solid wood construction, mostly walnut with walnut burl panels, very tasteful Eastlake geometric details, original wavy glass and beautiful original patina. Three adjustable shelves in the top book case; drop-down writing surface with original felt, two drawers, file bins and pigeon holes; one fixed self in the base. The two locks work with a replacement key, but they are a little sticky, and one of the rosettes that covers the writing panel pivot is missing. Measures: 42 x 85 x 11.5 top, 20 base. I bought this from a private party in DC about 20 years ago and now I'm downsizing a bit, so I hope it finds a good home. Up for auction is this a nice. Old(estimate from the late 1800’s) lap desk. The top front left corner is cracking but remains sturdy thanks to a former owner’s attempted repair. As pictured. Antique schoolmaster desk, American, late 1800 early 1900
This is an exquisite antique handcrafted schoolmaster desk. It is in excellent condition and as you can tell from the pictures has a vibrant walnut finish. We believe this to be a hardwood such as walnut or birch. Not entirely sure. There are no markings on this piece, but any knowledgeable professional dealing with antiques will tell you that not all antique furniture needs to have markings on it to make it special. It has several compartments of different sizes. One drawer, a small compartment with a lift off lid, a large packet with a snap closure attached to the inside of the front panel door, and another packet of bound stationery that you can slide out. Please see photograph#12. The pull out tab on this packet is torn. If you look at the inside of the lid. You will see three sheaths, two of which are holding a pen and a bakelite letter opener. the middle sheath is torn in half, and so, cannot be used. The pen was in the box when ... moreI bought it and is, of course, not original to the box. The letter opener was also in the box and may be original to the box. I am selling this piece with all the items that were in it when I purchased it. The brass hardware is all original. But I do not have the key for the lock. Since there is no key to lock the box, it cannot be carried by the handle on top without opening and spilling the contents. The hinge on the bottom right of the front panel is loose. But I will leave that to the new owner to tighten the screws which are all there. The overall width including the molding lip on the bottom measures 11 1/2" and without the lip it is 11" wide. The depth is 7 1/4" and the heighth measures 8 1/2" The patina and the figure in the wood of the quartered white oak is just beautiful with barely a flaw. I've had this box displayed on my desk for a few years. But before me, someone took very good care to keep the outside of the box immaculate, but judging by the wear on the inside, it is obvious that it was well used and handled often although there are very few scratches on the wood inside.
