This is most likely late 18th, early 19th century, but possibly Civil War era. These first started to appear in the last decades of the 18th Century. This particular Desk isn't as ornate as many of the writing desks that I have seen here on ebay. Or online. This one seems to have been made purely for it's practical purpose. It shows it's age. But is still in good solid shape. It does have a few stains though. But. I guess it could possibly be refinished. The box had a key that is missing; the top unfolds and has a red velvet cover allowing the user to write easily. The cover unfolds and there an inner compartment to keep paper or hand writing utensils. On the top. There is a small box, most likely for envelops or short pads. I have up for sale a very nice vintage/ antique circa 1870s- 1890s smaller size Hand Carved Wood Traveling Secretary Lap Writing Desk. It measures approx 13-5/8" long. 9-1/2" deep,and 3" high on the back section. The top lid folds down to reveal a writing surface, still has the old velvet, the ribbon is a recent replacement of course. Under this is a storage area for papers or documents. The top section folds up, for a storage area for pens, inkwells and accessories. I am not sure if this is Black Forest but it does have very nice hand carved designs- the top panel has leaves.Vines,and either berries or grapes. The back portion is hinged and lifts up to reveal an area for pens and possibly for inkwells or whatever. It is in very good shape. Some normal wear as one would expect from an item of its type and age. There is one small area of imperfection- located on the hinge area, noticed in pics 7& 8. There is a small piece broken out in this area. Being ultra fussy there is also a small worn wood section, on the front lower right corner area. Other than this its in excellent shape. Antique Vintage Mahogany Wood Portable Writing Lap Desk W/2 Ink Wells Nice
A great antique for any collector. Calligraphy artist, writer or interior decorator. In beautiful condition for its age! Needs some restoration. Sold as found and as is. Working key and two original inkwells included along with the blotter and pen(old letter NOT included) Note: front right corner has a small crack. Hinges are a bit loose, some minor staining on top, see pictures. Felt is in good condition and has been carefully replaced, but everything else is original. The box is approximately 11" wide by 7 3/4" deep by 3 1/2" tall.

Portable Writing Walnut Desk CA 1840's
Elegant writing desk 16" long by 9" wide and is 6" in depth. Probably English in origin the leather insert has been lovingly replaced. There are three areas for ink wells plus a walnut covered area for pens. There are two separate storage boxes under ink wells. Measuring 6 3/4" times 2" in width and one inch in height. There is an age crack across bottom, see picture. This is completely handmade with brass brackets on all four corners and has original lock and carrying brackets. The lock does not work as there is no key is available. Please ask questions. I am selling for my brother.

Antique 1830's-1870's English Laptop Writing Desk. Inlaid Abalone, Portable Up for bid is a gorgeous antique writing desk. It is a laptop style writing desk. We took it to our most knowledgeable antique expert here in Sacramento. He told us that it was made between 1830 to 1870. But most likely around 1830. He says that it was English made. It is made of Burl Walnut on the outside and faux Rose wood painted on the inside. The lid has a brass plaque in the center and the name Miriam is engraved in it. There is several types of shell and in between all of the different woods on the lid there is brass inlay. The writing surface is the original velvet, you can still even see a pretty border painted on the velvet. It could be replaced easily if you want, we like it like it is. It has a spot for an inkwell and a spot for a sanding pounce. ... moreIt also has a spot for the pen to lay in and in the center there is a spot to store accessories. It does have a small piece of wood missing by the sanding pounce spot, doesn't detract from the look or function. On the underside of the lid, it has a latch to bring down the writing surface to store papers and such in. The lower part of the writing surface lifts up for more storage. It does have some condition issues, a couple pieces of abalone are missing, along with the white material. There are a couple of chips to the burl walnut and a couple of minor cracks of the burl walnut. It is beautiful and we decided not to fix any of the issues. We think it shows the character of the piece. It came out of an estate from San Francisco. It measures 13" x 9" x 5" high. It would make a wonderful Christmas or Hanukkah gift! CIVIL WAR ERA. Great condition! Portable writing desk. Beautiful wood case with brass corners and brass plate on top with monogram"AJC. Desk shows wear and use. But still in wonderful condition. Interior has black lacquer finish and leather writing surface with gold embossed decoration. Lots of extras included: two pens with steel nibs. One extra nib, one very old hand-sharpened pencil, one glass ink well, and one black rolling documents pin. 13.75" width x 9" deep x 5.5" high. Lots of nice details and evidence of use. ANTIQUE WRITING DESK– NO RESERVE Acquired at an estate sale in Virginia is this antique wood folding lap writing desk. Unknown type of wood- does have a cedar smell on the inside. Inside in many areas written in pencil is dated information from the 1800’s. Some of the writing with signatures is faded and difficult to read. Some the years can be read are“June 1894” 465 letters” March 15& 16 1895” March( 17, 1877” and“July( 18, 1875” There is no structural damage to the box. There are no apparent breaks or repairs. Hinges are securely in place. Closed the desk measures 3 ¾ inches tall. 11 ¼ inches long and 7 ¾ inches wide. Open the desk measures 15-3/4 inches long. 11-1/4 inches wide and 1-1/4 inches to 2-1/2 inches tall(slopes up) Writing area has ink stains and is loose in one area– see photos. Glass inkwell without cap ... moreis included. Two pencils are also included. When the desk is closed the top has some marks/stains– I have not tried to clean these marks/stains. Key is included; unknown if this is the actual or original key. The key does work but at times it is difficult to unlock– I would not recommend locking the desk. Antique Travel Walnut ? Wooden Writing Lap Field Stationary Portable Desk Box
Antique Portable Travel Writing Lap Desk with bun feet. This piece was purchased at an estate sale in the Washington DC area. Desk measures approx. 17" long x 9 deep x 14" tall. There are several compartments and drawers. The drawers are all hand dovetailed. Front and back sides. There are the 2 hidden compartments that come out, but look as though they are stationery columns. My guess is that the brass hardware is original. The finish may not be original. The wood may be walnut, not sure though. There are some nicks, surface scratches and signs of aging, all of which I consider age appropriate wear. A little bit of veneer damage, some stress cracks(some are natural in the wood) and inside has some slight warping. There is no key. I love this piece but have nowhere to display it in my home.
