Beautifully refinished empire mahogany secretary circa 1860-1880. The secretary is made in two parts for easy transport. The overall measurements are 81 1/2" high(good for 8' ceiling homes) 46" wide at the top crown molding and 44 1/2" wide at the door area, and 18 1/2" deep at the bottom. The top section measures 46" wide and 11" deep. It has two glass doors that are 31 1/2" high and 19 3/4" wide. There is a lock in the top door but I do not have the key. Ther are two fixed shelves for displaying. The bottom section measures 37" high and 39 1/2" wide. The bottom section starts with two small drawers that are 16" wide and 4" high. Below that is the writing drop section. This measures 40 3/4" wide and 18" deep. The writing surface leather has not been replaced. After ... morethe drop section are three storage drawers. The first drawer is 5 1/4" high x 34" wide. The two bottom drawers are large good for storage. These are 9" high x 34" wide. Offered for sale is this beautiful large antique secretary-bookcase in gorgeous solid wood. We think it is cherry. But will leave it to the lucky new owner to decide. The desk base is 44-1/2 inches high x 38-1/2 inches wide x 23-1/2 inches deep at its widest point. The top of the esk is 13 inches deep. The drop front reveals a complete contingent of pigeon holes and drawers. There are slide supports on either side that pull out to uphold the weight of the drop front, which becomes the writing surface. Below the desk are three deep storage drawers. The top drawer has hidden finger holds under the front of the drawer, and the lower two drawers have wooden knobs. The upper bookcase portion is 40 inches high x 34 inches wide x 11-1/2 inches deep. The beautiful molding at the top extends in both width and depth, and measures 13-1/2 inches deep ... morex 42 inches wide. There are two shelves plus the floor of the bookcase(making the third shelf) and the doors feature six panes of original blown glass. The key to the bookcase is present and correct. The bookcase affixes to the desk with long screws through the floor of the bookcase. This is a most handsome and imposing piece, and our photos do not do it justice. This is a great old early Mahogany Secretary Desk. We did not find a label but based upon form and style we can confidently attribute it to J&J W Meeks of NYC. Circa 1830 to 1840. It has been restored back to pristine condition, note photo of cracks that been repaired and filled. Flame grain figured mahogany veneer is prominent throughout this piece, it is truly beautiful. The drop down down door opens to reveal many compartments and drawers, the lock has been replaced on this door) on the side of the large drawer are these carvings: LP No 17/1803. There is one full length drawer and 3 doors at the bottom, the center door is straight while the one on each side is curved. the locks on these 3 doors have been replaced with new ones and the outside backing has been replaced. In amazing original condition, this is a beautiful flame mahogany flip top empire secretary bookcase desk. Look ... moreat the flame mahogany that these cabinet makers used back before the Civil War, and it’s obvious that they were very talented. There is matched flame mahogany veneer across the hand-cut dovetail drawers and the flip down lid. It has the big, wide molded crown molded top, arched gallery center face with flame mahogany all over, and the individually paned doors with some of the original glass still in them, and the double shelf interior. There are two hand cut dovetail drawers underneath the glass doors, and it comes down into a base with a flip-top lid on which we have redone the felt with antique red. The three hand-cut dovetail drawers come down into a scrolled empire legged base. The glass has been replaced in two of the sections for sure, and maybe some other places. You can see some of the triangular points that holds the glass panes in. The cabinet is in great condition, with some wear marks on the sides, and they can be refinished easily. The overall size is 40 inches wide, 22 inches deep, 34 inches to the cabinet top, and 78 inches to the very top and comes apart in two sections. First. The pictures do not do justice to this beautiful piece of work. It's an Empire period Flame Mahogany Secretary with a 2-Door bookcase above and single drawer below. This piece was estimated to have been made in the middle 1800's and is in remarkable condition. The inside 2 drawers are hand dove-tailed. The bottom wide drawer is hand dove-tailed as well. The bead work along the front doors and along the top is in excellent condition and beautifully done. This great piece of furniture shows signs of age as you can see in the close up picture of the zipper-like crackle in the veneer along the side, but, there is no separation. The desk measures 80" at the peak, is 39" wide and is mounted on 4 turned legs. The depth at the top is 11" and is 18-1/2" for the drawer section. Two piece construction: the bookcase with three adjustable wood shelves, the interior with an old ivory paint finish. Both doors retain their original wavy glass, brass escutcheon, key and lock. The drop front desk has a felt writing surface, cubbyhole with two drawers and letter slots. The two bottom doors have a brass grill over dowel framed pink fabric, with brass escutcheon and lock. Classical Empire Secretary Bookcase C. 1840
Classical mahogany secretary bookcase of impressive size and proportions C. 1840. Completely devoid of hardware this desks cabinets and drawers are only accessible by key. The full freestanding columns flanking the bookcase have ionic carved capitols and turned bases. The plinth style base conceals six brass rollers. The case is made of Mahogany with highly figured mahogany veneers over white pine. All components are mortised through or dovetailed. Drawer sides are mahogany(denoting a quality shop) and bottoms are poplar. The sever style suggests Boston origin to me but that's just my best guess. Two original shelves remain the others are replacements. Finish is original and has been refreshed with a new polish, overall it presents very well(especially the color) with a few minor blemishes.
