Glass Inkwells, Working Key, Powered by Offered here for auction is an Antique Rosewood-Veneer Lap Desk(or"Writing Box" with an ornate mother-of-pearl& inlaid wood design on the top and edges. The original owner(1866-1936) was wheelchair-bound. So this desk was well used and loved. It has remained in the same family ever since. The box measures 15" wide, 10½" deep, and 5½" tall(I believe this is large for a writing box of this age) You must look at the photographs to appreciate the beauty of this piece! The top is adorn with delicate designs. Separated by thin strips of metal. Gold gilding, mother-of-pearl, and various shades of inlaid wood make up the floral/vine-like center and the borders around it. Even the ... moretop's edges feature a gold& mother-of-pearl star design. There is a diamond-shaped brass plate around the key hole; the original key is included and still works to lock& unlock the box! There is also an inlaid brass notch on the box's top to lift the lid with ease. Amazing craftsmanship! The box has a hinged lid and opens fully to reveal a rich purple velvet-covered inclined surface. The purple is now faded around the edges with age(as you can see in the photos) There are five cubbyholes. One of which is rectangular(with a lid) to accommodate pens/pencils; and four square cubbies perfectly sized for the two ink bottles(included, although one is missing the cap) as well as other writing supplies. Other features include a spacious storage area in the base for paper or small books This is opened by the pull of a green ribbon(now faded) And last(but not least) is a hard writing surface that flips down from the lid. This compartment has a small latch-mechanism to keep it shut when not in use. This box is made of a wood veneer. Up for consideration is an antique lap desk. It is English with some nice brass inlay and is circa 1840. This piece came from the famous Henry Stern Antique shop in Louisiana. Henry Stern is world renown for his antique shops in the French Quarter and was one of the biggest collectors/dealers of his time. This lap desk is in as-found condition with the original tag(pictured) The leather has some glue residue on it from the previous owner. This is a beautiful antique piece made of rosewood from circa 1840. Brass inlay on the top. Front and sides makes this piece very stunning and a great conversation piece.It comes with the original ink bottles, pen, and key. There are some small chips on the lips of the bottles but still in great condition for its age. The shorter side has a folding surface which opens to a walnut lined compartment. It has two slide locks to hold it in place. The opposite side has a folding surface as well which shows a ... morewalnut compartment which is removable. Then an ebonized wood at the end which holds pens. Inkwell etc. Underneath inside the compartment are three hidden drawers with cloth pulls. Then a side lock on one side which when pulled up releases the exterior hidden drawer. The piece is stunning and large. It does need some work. I don't have a key. There are extra original brass mounts and inlay inside for fixing. It measures an incredible 20" by 11" by 8" See condition below. Being sold without reserve& a $9.99 start. Have fun bidding. Condition: The box as stated needs some work. It is not bad off. Opens and closes fine. Needs a few pieces of the pen/inkwell holder ebonized wood repaired and replaced. Which some of the pieces are there for it. Antique Rosewood Lap Writing Desk, Stenciled Border 1860's
A very attractive wooden lap writing desk in rosewood. Crafted in America in the mid-19th Century. Nice diamond stenciling on top and front bandings. The writing surface is a rose felt that shows pretty normal wear from 150 yrs or so of use. There is also a writing utensil compartment inside. All exterior wood areas are in good order. No cracks or breaks. There is however some old tape residue on the top surface that can be removed with some patience and skill. Its a nice size at: 11.5" long x 8" wide x 4" tall. It weighs approximately 5 lbs.

This is a gorgeous antique. Circa 1840 rosewood lap desk. Includes the key. 2 silver ink bottles, porcupine quill. There is brass inlay across the top and sides. Approx. Measurements: 13 7/8" x 9 1/4" x 4 5/8" There are six compartments on the inside: 2 for the silver ink bottles. 1 to hold items such as stamps. 1 for the porcupine quill. Which also has a lid. 1 which opens up to hold the stationary. 1 which opens up to hold the envelopes. There is a small crack across the top of the box but still in very good condition for its age. Antique 1800's CAPTAIN's ROSEWOOD & BRASS FOLDING LAP DESK~HIDDEN COMPARTMENTS!
I bought this from a very old estate in Vermont. Mostly 19c and older furniture and items. The lap desk is described as a Ship Captains lap desk or folding travel desk. It is made of Rosewood with Brass strapsand corners. It is in remarkable condition. There is a secret compartment where the vertical panel below the script pens and ink is released by lifting up the left hand divider where there is a spring clip under the wood. The panel springs out to reveal three drawers. One drawer is missing the tiny knob. It measures 20"inches by 10"inches and 7"inches tall. Dark blue velvet on the writing service. There.
