Description: This listing is for a ... moreChippendale Period Slant Front Desk circa 1770-80. Salem Massachusetts, in the manner of John Chipman(b. 1746-1819) It features solid Cuban Mahogany case, each side crafted of a single solid plank, through-dovetailed at the top and dovetailed at the bottom. The slant front lid features an original keyhole escutcheon over what appears to be the original brass lock, falling onto arms that slide out with brass knobs- one original, the left one replaced. The open writing surface is clean, with what appear to be two original brass hinges, though curious patching is noted below flaking each hinge. Above the writing surface is a collection of nine small drawers, the centermost shell carved, each with brass knobs, below which a gallery of six pigeon holes rest in perfect symmetry. The case has four graduated drawers. Each of which feature period bail pull brass hardware flanking a replaced lock with original brass keyhole escutcheon. The drawers are hand dovetailed front and back, the front dovetails hidden behind applied cockbead molding. The drawers are yellow pine secondaries, the bottom being deeply chamfered along the perimeter to rabbet into the frame. They slide easily in and out of the case over replaced drawer runners, the drawer dividers running into the sides behind a mahogany facade, effectively hiding what are probably dovetail joints. The back of the case has all original backboards, though many nails are replaced. The molded apron features a carved shell drop down medallion in the center that mirrors the design of the middle drawer. The case rests over scroll cut bracket feet, each with an incredible flowing design in the manner of John Chipman. We do not believe the desk was executed in the shop of John Chipman. As his cases will typically feature exposed dovetail drawer dividers in the Newport manner, and the pidgeon-hole gallery will regularly featur

The drawer fronts have book-matched crotch mahogany veneers and cockbeading. The fitted interior(sorry for the dust) has burl walnut veneers, ebonized pulls and boxwood stringing. The interior cupboard door opens to reveal a drawer with a secret drawer behind. See photo) The desk measures 44" high by 39 1/2" wide by 20" deep. In overall very good condition. There is some minor loss to the veneer on the feet which we will restore for you. The desk lid is cupped which makes the desk impossible to lock properly though we do have a key. There is also some cracking of the veneer on the lid but it is all stable, nothing loose. The desk has great color and patination and is guaranteed to be as described. This is a great antique 19th century French slant front desk with excellent craftsmanship shown in the carving work and the lid where you can see the hand planing that was done to the piece. The hardware is all original on this piece but the leather has been replaced. There are a couple imperfections that are shown in the final two pictures there is a nearly identical one as seen in picture 11 over the other pull out to lay the slant down on that couldn't be pictures. Antique 1800's Desk Walnut Slant Front Top Section Only or Countertop Original
Antique 1800's desk slant front top or possibly a counter top desk for a country store. Etc. I believe that it's all original with the original outside finish and interior light green paint. The wood is walnut, popular back in the old days. The early desk hardware is pictured in photos# 3 and# 8. As you can see it possibly is a desk that just sat on a counter, etc. because of the way it's not finished on bottom and not much of evidence of any nails or screws holding it on to a base, so possibly a complete unit in itself and all complete. Photo#9 shows the pencil or pen holder that extents the whole inside front. In photo#4 the hole for an early ink well can be seen. It measures about 26 inches wide, about 20 1\4 inches deep and about 8 1\2 inches high in back and about 6 1\2 inches high in front. Antique Georgian Federal(?) Secretary Slant Front Desk Four Drawer Bureau 1840
Family lore has it that this was made in 1840 but I don't know for sure. This was my father's father and. Given to me but I'm headed to. South America and none of our children want it. All the drawers and top are joined. With dovetails at the corners. All the drawer bottoms have chamfered. Ends that fit into a tight track in the drawer. Sides. I'm guessing that drawer facewood. Is cherry(mahogany? and hinder parts of drawers made from boxwood. All the drawers fit precisely. The large drawers have grooves worn in them. From riding over guidance rails in the front of. The drawer entry points(see pics) It looks like. This was by design to accommodate the heavy. Drawers(which are prob mahogany. Not cherry) Veneer is poor in several areas. Esp the slope top front. This is a gorgeous. Early 1800's, American Federal style secretary. Solid wood made from cherry and tiger oak. Has a beautiful tulip inlay. A fitted interior. Long curved front drawer and two smaller curved front drawers complement the design. Here is an absolutely gorgeous antique mahogany desk with lovely burl mahogany veneer and border design inlay. Circa 1840 and American made. This slant front desk drawers. The desk stands 43 inches tall and measures 38 inches wide by 21 inches deep, front to back. The writing surface itself is 36 inches wide by 21 inches from front to back. The surface is beautiful and in very good condition. The inside of the desk also reveals 16 small drawers and an additional cubby with lovely inlay door as shown. Below the desk slant front. T here are four large drawers. Each 31 1/2 inches wide and 18 1/4 inches front to back and then 2 3/4, 3 3/4, 4 3/4 and 6 inches deep respectively, in descending order. The lock sets are original and in working order and the keys are replaced. The drawers are all still lined with a thin blue paper.certainly a Victorian ... morething. The dovetails are not hand cut and irregular. But are consistent. Online I found this description: A close inspection shows no irregular saw cuts or variation from a skilled craftsman, but rather a precise and identical manufactured machined joint. These machine-cut dovetails are as strong and long lasting as the hand-made joints, and became the standard of better American furniture ever since the late 1890's. So this desk may be very late 1800s or early 1900s. Another indication is that the back is not multiple boards. But appears to be an early plywood? There is a tiny hole drilled in the back where I think my dad had our phone(land line) cord come in so the phone could be in the desk. Regardless, it is a beautiful old desk. Exquisite antique continental slant or fall front desk. Made with intricate inlaid marquetry featuring striking burl fruitwoods. This small decorative piece was likely intended as a ladies' writing desk. The fall front opens to reveal a writing surface as well as two cubbies, two drawers and a tiny cabinet with door. There are two drawers below the writing surface, each with consecutive concave sections, scrollwork inlay and ornate meta pulls. The bottom portion features a carved skirt and graceful cabriole legs ending in trifid feet. Overall the desk is in good antique condition. With some wear and minor crackling to the surfaces. The key surround at the top of the piece is coming loose and there is a small break behind the front left leg, which is not visible without lying under the desk and does ... morenot seem to affect the sturdiness of this piece. Antique American 19th / 20th C Chippendale Ball & Claw Mahogany SLANT FRONT DESK
Here we offer a beautiful turn 19th/ 20th Century Queen Anne. Ball and Claw Slant Front Desk. Sea Shell cartouche motifs. Not your average, run of the mill desk. This baby has crisp carvings and intricate construction. It stands on four high beautifully curved and carved legs, ending in ball and claw foot. Front lid carved to the max opens up and sets on the support slides that pull out on ends. Judging by the lack of the pull handles on the slides, and by the bronze hardware mechanism, I believe the slides to have been mechanical. Desk interior features four drawers, four upright drawers and another four cubbyhole compartments. Outside there is one wide center drawer, with two additional ones. It is in good. Has turned legs with a slant front desk top that lifts up and a secretary style top with doors that open and cubbies inside. Not sure of history of this piece. We obtained it from an estate sale in Johnston County, North Carolina. One of the most interesting thing about this desk is that in the upper corner of the right door there is a piece of paper taped inside that lists the presidents of the United States and has 24 of them with Woodrow Wilson being the last one and the date listed is 1893. This piece looks like perhaps the top may have been added later, not sure, and also where the slant top is looks like it was altered at one time as well. An amazing piece, all pegged. American Chippendale Walnut Slant Front Antique Desk, Chester County, PA c. 1807
AMERICAN CHIPPENDALE WALNUT SLANT FRONT DESK. PENNSYLVANIA Probably Chester County. Signed illegibly four times and dated 1807 Item# 411IQL13P This fine example of Eastern Pennsylvania craftsmanship. Almost certainly originating in Chester County, has a distinct air of ingenuity about it. A departure from the typical corinthian fluted corner columns seen on these cases, the desk employs a quartered column with three graduated divisions of double-ringing in completion of the drawer blades they flank. This effective treatment softens the facade and introduces a certain magnetic rural character to the form. The interior is exceptional. The deep writing surface edged by a scalloped molding conforming with the serpentine of the ten blocked front drawers beneath ten pigeon holes. Instead of employing a prospect door, the center of the interior ... moreis a complicated little box that is easily drawn from the center- over the pigeon holes in this box, the valance actually is a tiny hidden drawer. By removing the entire dovetailed box from the interior, a previously hidden document drawer becomes visible. On the front it is signed illegibly"J. Sh.f.p Rat. 1807" the same signature seen also on the two hidden document drawers that flank this drawer and the two hidden document drawers that flank these as well- to bring out the deepest document drawers, a long string is attached and can be tugged to bring these unseen pieces forward. The front of the desk is composed of a pair of lopers. The fronts of which are set on tiny dovetails and sunk into the blades, and four graduated drawers retaining their original locks and untouched structure with replaced brasses. The top and bottom of the case are openly dovetailed, the back of the case with untouched half-lapped planks retaining their original rosehead and cut nails and a nearly black level of oxidization throughout. ANTIQUE SECRETARY DESK w Inlay, Mother of Pearl Slant, Drop Front Desk
We are selling a lovely antique secretary drop front desk with an inlaid design on the front. As you can see the inlay pattern is quite nice and incorporates mother of pearl. The desk stands approximately 40" high by 28" wide by 15.5" deep. While the desk is a little rough around the edges- it could use a thorough cleaning and does have a number of scuffs and dings. As well as some loss to the back panel and the lower right edge of the front- it has a nice shape and patina with a little TLC will have a lot of use left to offer. Antique Squire's Front Slant Desk. Condition"Very Good" The desk has been in the family for over 50 years. I was told it was from a lumbar mill(late 1800s) but I have no documentation. It has been mended but not refinished while we have had it. It is in 2 pieces. Height 5ft. 6" Width 3ft 8" Length 3 ft. Legs 2ft. I have been told the wood is American Pine. But I don't know that for sure.

Antique American Cherry Hepplewhite Slant Front Desk. Pennsylvania, Ca. 1800 Probably central Pennsylvania. Circa 1800. The form consisting of a hardwood case resting on flared French bracket feet with four drawers(each having a lip moulded edge. Recessed brass escutcheon and wooden knobs) The verticals with an inlaid large panel of ebonized wood. The interior fitted with with a typical arrangement of pigeonholes and six drawers(three on either side) Each area separated by a strip of tiger maple veneer. A central prospect door opens to reveal an internal storage area. The wooden knobs on the drawers to the best of our knowledge are original. The interior of the drawers have a old yellow lacquered finish. Probably done over 100 years ago. MEASUREMENTS: 42-1/2" x 21-1/2" x 46-1/4" high. CONDITION: Wear consistent with age. Probably ... moremissing internal pigeonhole drawers behind prospect door, surface appears to be old and untouched.
