There is a name and year written on the bottom of the desk, but it is very faint and can only be seen while hold the desk at a certain angle to the light. I tried to capture the writing in a picture, but could only get the first part of the name. The name stands out the most. The rest of the writing, I believe would be where the owner lived and the year is much fainter. It looks like Maggie C Farr(something) something) 1876 or 1896. The box measures about 11 ¼” x 7 3/4” x 3 ½” closed) Opened and lying flat the desk measures about 16” long. The inside bottom felt writing surface that lifts up is tight and strong while the top felt writing surface that lifts up is wiggly, but still very much intact. Very nice old lap desk. This is a very neat old travel lap desk. I would guess hand made. Neat inlays and borders. it measures 12.5 long by 8 wide by 5 tall. the inside has compartments, and hinged covers on the inside. the hinge on the left side of the top inside is loose, and the felt has disintegrated from the boards on the inside and the bottom. there is a removable pencil holder. the desk is solid and has no damage other than the broken hinge on the inside. see my other auctions for more neat old items. This is one gorgeous piece of wood. It is burled walnut and is from the early 1800s. It is a lap desk or maybe used as a bed tray. It is 32" long and 14" tall. It is in really nice condition. You can obviously tell it is a true antique but I don't see any chips on the edges, etc. Please ask if you have questions. Up for auction is this beautiful 19th century rose wood lap desk. This was purchased by myself at the Ivey sellkirk auction on dec. 8th featuring items from the Stan and Lillian Musial estate. It is in great condition and absolutely beautiful. It is 9.5 inches high and 14.5 inches wide. It features mother of pearl and abalone highlights. It also has a scrolling back rail over the recessed pen and ink tray and a lidded compartment over the sloping. Leather inset hinged writing surface. Also there is a slide out drawer to the right. It has a lock on the drawer but I do not have the key. It is not locked though and opens. This is one of my favorites. I almost dont want to sell it. I hope it finds a good home. Antique Civil War Era Fold Up Lap Desk Wood Veneered Traveling Writing Slope
This is a Beautiful 19 th Century Traveling Lap Desk. The box is covered in a wood veneer and has an inlay circle on the lid and around the key hole. The writing surface is covered in green velvet and is original to the piece. The hinges are original and in good repair. In addition to storage under the writing surfaces. There are four compartments, one of which is covered. The bottom of the desk is covered in green felt. The box is in very good aged condition. There are few places were the veneer has broken and there are some age or shrinkage cracks to the wood(see pictures) The box is 14” across. 9” wide, and 5” tall. It was procured at an Antique Estate Auction in Central Kentucky.

The wood looks beautiful and is undamaged. The lock and key work properly and the hinges are undamaged. There is no manufacturer's information or label on the desk. The inkwells are not included. The sides appear to be rosewood and the top wood could be mahogany. The felt looks to have been replaced. Beautiful Antique Roll Top Lap Desk. Writing Slope Up for your consideration is this truly beautiful antique lap desk. Made of wood. I am uncertain of the actual type of wood but has nice graining. This is just great in every way, it is intact and very secure when completely shut and when you pull out the drawer at the front, it will open the roll top portion in the back to expose a three section area inside. Once the roll top is open, you can unfold the desk portion which flips open from back to front and leans securely on the open drawer for stability, the desk has a purple or a worn blue felt top with brass hinges. Again, the wood is very nice inside and out, the drawer opens nicely as does the roll top portion. There is a large transfer decoration on the wood desk top, there is also the very slight remains of one on the top of the roll ... moretop framed area. There are only two areas with minor problems, first is the lower right corner which is missing a small corner wood piece, and the upper left corner of the framing of the roll top where there is also a small piece of wood missing; otherwise, working very well and looking very good. There is a brass lock in place for the drawer but no key and the hinges are brass as well and seem to be original. It measures 12 1/8" wide, 9 1/4" deep, 5 1/2" tall. It is very clean, no major breaks, cracks, or discoloration. Nice patina, nice scroll design in wood at the top roll top framing, transfer decoration is wearing and almost gone on the top portion, and of course, the two missing pieces mentioned earlier. This is an antique Victorian 1800s solid wood sloped travel lap desk with working brass lock and key. Featuring. Brass hinges and lock, blue felt writing surface with two storage compartments underneath. It has two inkwell compartments and the center section for pens lifts out. Found inside the center compartment was six nice quill pen ends and what appears to be some sort of pencil. The lapdesk wood looks beautiful and is undamaged. There is an inscription inside the box it is pictured and says that" This box was presented on December 25th 1852" So obvioulsy a Christmas gift. The lock and key work properly and the hinges are undamaged. The box is in very nice condition. The quill ends and pencil are included in this sell. The box appears to be solid walnut. Antique Burl Wood Veneer Lap Desk Storage Box
Antique burl wood veneer lap desk possibly a presentation piece. Needs some TLC. Measures 12-3/4" x 9" x 5.5" Inside writing area is a blue velvet which is torn where the 2 boards meet/folds. There is a brass inlaid medallion with 3 initials"FROM" and another set of 3 initials. There is cracking. Splitting and some raised areas on the wood veneer. There are 2 nails used as pins to hold the hinge together. Really quite a shame it's in this condition, but with some patience and dedication, it could be restored. Victorian Inlaid Wood Traveling Lap Desk for Writing As Is Shown. 4" height 12 3/4" length 8 1/2" width This lap desk is in fair condition. There are some scratches and small gouges throughout the piece due to normal wear. The wood on the top of the case has chipped away along the bottom edge and along the bottom right edge. The wood has also chipped away around the corners of the piece. Some of the inlaid wood has been replaced(see pics) The floral design that has been inlaid into front is still intact. There are small white paint splatters on the top of the case. The wood trim is coming loose along the left side of the top half of the case. Some of the corners on this piece do not align tightly. Three of the ... morecorners appear to have been repaired before. There is a lock on the lower front half of the desk; the key is missing. There are two hinges on the back of the case. One side of each hinge has come loose from the case. The holes where the screws were secured have become worn down and too large. The inside of the lap desk is in good condition. There are no cracks or chips on the wood inside of the case. There is a purple velvet-like material inside the case that is still intact and has no rips or holes. The inside of the case also has a 1.5" deep slot with four seperate compartments. The largest compartment has a removable cover. The wood inside of the desk can also lift up to reveal a compartment that is 11 3/4" long x 5 3/4" high x 2" deep. Being sold as is. As shown, see pictures for details. Up for auction is a vintage looking wood inlay lap desk. Inherited from my father's house and I have no idea where he got it. Just know that it sat in his den holding stamps. Bills etc.before it came to me and served the same function in my office. Have now moved my office to home and have no more space for this useful and very attractive piece. It could be an antique Victorian lap desk as my father was always heading to auctions of all sort, and they were all the rage in Victoria's time or it could simply be a well done but more recent reproduction of a Victorian piece. I really do not know. Measures 13" wide x 10" tall. The front angled panel flips backward to reveal an inner compartment with seven separate sections. Two glass ink wells(one is missing its original brass lid) a pencil/pen compartment and a flat embossed ... moreleather covered table for writing on. Brass hinges and nice inlay work to the centre of the front panel and the four corners. There is a vertical crack measuring 7" to the veneer on the front of the lap desk. There is also a 3" crack on the upper back side. Neither of these appear to be getting any wider and neither affect the functionality of the desk. We have a wonderful antique, Victorian era slant top lap ... moredesk which is on a stand. Inside of the desk is a panel that conceals two secret drawers for security while travelling. You never know when your stagecoach is going to be set upon by brigands or highwaymen! The wooden box, we think it is walnut, features brass hardware, as you can see in the photos, the lock, the inset on the cover, and straps around the corners, etc. The box measures approx. 13 ⅝" by 8 ¾" by 5 ¾" standing approx. 19 ¼" tall with the stand. When you open the desk. You can see the desk top panels are covered in a textured black paper with gold gilt trim. The finish of the wood has a wonderful glow to it, along with signs of age and use, such as surface scratches and little nicks, as well as mystery stains. We found an old hand written name on one of the wood pieces- T W Cox. We took photos of it, so that you can see for yourself. We believe that the stand is a later addition to the piece; the wood is not quite a match. Recently acquired it at an estate sale. Would make a great gift or keep it for yourself. The lap desk is probably English made. But that is just a guess, you be the judge. F or your consideration is this beautiful antique lap desk in very nice condition. The wood is most likely walnut and it has a great luster to it. What makes this piece really unique is the secret slide drawer compartment at the bottom of the case. It can be opened by opening the case and then taking the brass rod out of the left side of the box that"locks" it in place. My guess is this piece dates to the mid to late 1800s. You be the judge before buying. This lap desk is beautiful with ... moreonly small surface scratches. The corners are seamed togethers. A slice of veneer below the secret drawer is missing. Very nice wood and graining. The inside folding pieces are still all there as well. The hinges are all there. The top panel of the desk has come unglued and I have left it that way. I took the pics of the case with what I think was the inside of the case, but I think it looks better that way. So leaving top unglued, so that the next owner can decide which side they want showing. The lock and latch and the bone piece around the key hole are there, the case did not come with a key. The top of the inside of the desk has a green felt fabric on it which shows wear. The bone pull is on the secret drawer to pull it out. The desk has two brass handles to carry it by. Both sides of the lap desk open for storage. Has open areas for two ink bottles in the well areas. One on the left and one on the right. The bottom of the lap desk has felt that is coming off. The bottom of the case needs some re-gluing as well. This is a diamond in the rough. Yes it needs loving care and restoration. We know it was a great. Great grandmothers desk, but not sure if she brought it from England or not. It has a secret drawer. Little compartments, and a little cover for small treasures. inkwell glass bottle(1) Some keys, some waxed string for whatever we don't know. It has brass corner plates, and a plate on the top which we believe are the initials. H A M. there is what appears to be one pen which you would put a tip in, and a pencil. THERE IS ALSO some original sealing wax. they kind you melt and stamp. The felt is in bad shape, and the felt that connected the little table hinge is worn off. It weighs 14.9 pounds. measures in the box form 10 X 17 3/4 X 7 1/4" tall. and opened up it is 21" long, and slants for easy writing. It needs someone who can appreciate ... morehow old it is. 1800's Antique Wood Wooden Portable Folding Travel Lap Writing Desk Box w/ Key
ANTIQUE WRITING DESK– NO RESERVE Acquired at an estate sale in Virginia is this antique wood folding lap writing desk. Unknown type of wood- does have a cedar smell on the inside. Inside in many areas written in pencil is dated information from the 1800’s. Some of the writing with signatures is faded and difficult to read. Some the years can be read are“June 1894” 465 letters” March 15& 16 1895” March( 17, 1877” and“July( 18, 1875” There is no structural damage to the box. There are no apparent breaks or repairs. Hinges are securely in place. Closed the desk measures 3 ¾ inches tall. 11 ¼ inches long and 7 ¾ inches wide. Open the desk measures 15-3/4 inches long. 11-1/4 inches wide and 1-1/4 inches to 2-1/2 inches tall(slopes up) Writing area has ink stains and is loose in one area– see photos. Glass inkwell without cap ... moreis included. Two pencils are also included. When the desk is closed the top has some marks/stains– I have not tried to clean these marks/stains. Key is included; unknown if this is the actual or original key. The key does work but at times it is difficult to unlock– I would not recommend locking the desk. 1800's Primitive Wood Ship Captains WRITING LAP DESK for restoration or parts
Offered for sale is this early to mid 1800's wood lap writing desk for restoration in poor overall condition. It has a real primitive look to it and would be a great piece if restored. I purchased it at a Maritime Nautical auction in the Finger Lakes Region of New York State. The desk does have much wear and tear. And is missing some of its hardware. The lock and handles are missing and there is a loose board that needs to be re-glued under the small compartments. There is wear on the felt surface and the edges of the wood. It is a little unusual in the sense that it has a"lift top" panel that comes off as the pictures show. The box measures about 17" long by 10 1/2" deep by 7" tall. The desk has a great old antique look to it and could be a really fine looking desk with a little work.
