It also has the original metal hardware, which is absolutely incredible and ornate as well. The front door of the secretary that would open down as a writing service has been broken off, and in half horizontally, however, the hinges are intact and it could easily be repaired. This door is 14" top to bottom, 20" wide. There is a lot of light staining and wear as well as scratches and dings to the finish.

Offered for sale is this beautiful large antique secretary-bookcase in gorgeous solid wood. We think it is cherry. But will leave it to the lucky new owner to decide. The desk base is 44-1/2 inches high x 38-1/2 inches wide x 23-1/2 inches deep at its widest point. The top of the esk is 13 inches deep. The drop front reveals a complete contingent of pigeon holes and drawers. There are slide supports on either side that pull out to uphold the weight of the drop front, which becomes the writing surface. Below the desk are three deep storage drawers. The top drawer has hidden finger holds under the front of the drawer, and the lower two drawers have wooden knobs. The upper bookcase portion is 40 inches high x 34 inches wide x 11-1/2 inches deep. The beautiful molding at the top extends in both width and depth, and measures 13-1/2 inches deep ... morex 42 inches wide. There are two shelves plus the floor of the bookcase(making the third shelf) and the doors feature six panes of original blown glass. The key to the bookcase is present and correct. The old finish is very well preserved with lots of antique character- mars. Wear and shrinkage separations from age- see photos. Mahogany wood has delicate inlaid banding and warm patina. The top two drawers are false. They drop to form a desk top. This style of desk was often called a"butler's desk" in a large household, the butler was the head of staff and kept records in a desk like this. But this complete top is in lovely, age-appropriate condition. I believe the wood is walnut with pine as a secondary wood. There is a top section that lifts that goes the entire away across with the molding. Revealing pigeon holes/cubbies. On either side of the piece are large doors.the left side has a grid of cubbies. The right side has horizontal dividers, with pretty ogee divider detail for vertical file storage. Four drawers with horizontal beaded details.they no longer have their pulls but move freely. It starts with an ogee molded crown top, and has two beautiful wavy glass doors with two shelves inside, two hand-cut dovetail drawers, a flip down flame mahogany matched veneer lid that opens to reveal a green felt writing surface, which we have replaced, and pencil trays on the side. The top drawer opens to support the writing surface. Below that are two more large drawers with wooden knobs and traditional elephant style scroll feet. The overall size is 43.5 inches wide on the base, 21 inches deep, 32 inches high to the writing surface, and an unusually tall 83 inches high overall. It consists of separate upper and lower cases with a fold over slanted writing surface with the following features& characteristics: The outstanding mahogany finish with crotch mahogany veneer is in excellent condition. Viewed from front or sides. The entire piece has a stunning, rich and warm patina. The upper bookcase and desk features a handsome projecting molded crown/cornice with a flat top. The double glazed panel bookcase doors feature individually paned window glass. All but two of these beautiful old wavy glass panes are original. Victorian 1870 Antique Walnut Secretary Desk. Bookcase Top, Carved Grapes. This 1870's Victorian period solid walnut secretary desk has burl panels. A bookcase top and hand carved grapes. The original glossy finish has been revarnished over the years and is very well preserved with enough wear for warm antique patina. There are stains. Mars at the edges, shrinkage separations from age and ink stains for character. Waxed and polished, only an occasional wipe with a soft dry cloth is needed to maintain its luster. The drop front key is a handle only, the lock does not work. Inside are cubicles and small drawers. A separate piece for easier moving. The bookcase has a working lock. A very nice antique. Circa1930's, solid mahogany Chippndale style block-front secretary with drop front, a two lattice door bookcase above having broken arch urn crest. One piefe construction. The desk is on carved bracket feet, appropriate pierced brass pulls and escutcheons. Includes the three locks to the lower three drawers. Drawer interiors are in mahogany. The drop front desk brought down automatically advances the lopers to support the desk. There cubbyholes and drawers, with center door doors compartment. The bookcase has fluted pillars, doors include the lock, no key. Lattice doors with a single glass panel. Inside are two stationary mahogany shelves. The crest has a pedestaled flaming urn. It measures 7' 84" tall by 3' 36" wide by 20z" deep. The drop front writing surface measures 24" wide by 14" ... moredeep. The bookcase shelves are 6-1/2" deep. Antique English-Made Late George III Three-Piece Inlaid Drop Front Secretary/ Bookcase Flame Mahogany. C. 1800 41”L x 21”D x 80.5”H This beautiful secretary bookcase is space-saving. Handsome and commanding. It comprises three independent parts- 1) Moulded cornice with graceful profile accentuated by faux inlaid dentils 2) Two-door book cabinet with intersecting mullions defining nine glass panes each 39”L x 11.25”D x 44.5”H 3) Drop-front desk has 8 letter pidgeonholes and 4 drawers laid out side-by-side. Drawers have beautiful brass pulls. Original leather desktop has embossed border around. The drop front has swan neck brass pulls and plates. Although the righthand pull is missing. The cabinet below has two doors with frame and panel construction. Bracket feet support the whole at bottom. The desk is made of mahogany intricately inlaid ... moreacross cornice. Desk front and lower cabinet doors with ribbons& garlands together with fine trim lines and geometrics. These inlays may be period or may have been added in the later Edwardian(1890-1920) The top of the drop front is trimmed all the way around its perimeter in satin wood. Both right and left sides of the three components display a rectangular accent trim inlay. Desk drop front. And upper and lower cabinet doors have large keyed case locks, which date the desk to the late George III period. Original keys are included. This is a superb example of English cabinet-making art at the highest level. The desk is in very good condition. With few dents. There is a horizontal crack running from the lower right side to about the middle of the desk front(see photo) The brass pull on left side is missing. The wood trim at the top of the lefthand letter pidgeonhole needs re-glueing. Small piece from left foot on side needs re-glueing. Interior desktop leather is original and could stand to be replaced. Here is an terrific mid-late 19th century flame mahogany column step back secretary with fold out desk. Turned legs and glass door bookcase or storage& display cabinet above and three large functional bureau drawers below. I've detailed the restoration work this lovely piece will need to bring it back to it's former full value in my detailed description of condition above and in my multiple photographs included to accurately represent the design, quality, condition and construction as well as the overall beauty and potential of this marvelous old piece of mahogany furniture bargain priced as a restoration project. It has had a few small professional repairs to the veneer previously. This wonderful cabinet travels easily in two pieces and stands 68 1/2 inches tall by 42 1/2 inches wide and 20 inches deep front to back. The top ... morebookcase section measures 33 1/2 inches tall by 42 1/2 inches wide at the bonnet by 12 3/4 inches deep front to back. It has 12 panes of glass in it's upper cabinet doors and three small drawers run across the bottom within the top cabinet just below the two display shelves. The bottom bureau section measures 36 inches tall with a 35 inch tall flat surface height when the desk is closed and a 3/4 inch recessed space along the back for the upper bookcase to rest in. The base is 42 1/2 inches wide and 20 inches deep front to back and had three drawers. Inside the top bookcase the cabinet measures 25 1/2 inches wide by 8 1/2 inches deep and 28 inches tall. Divided by a shelf with 12 inches clarance below the shelf and 15 inches clearance above the shelf. Below the shelves but inside the cabinet doors are three small beautifully hand dovetailed drawers, 11 1/4 wide by 5 3/4 inch front to back by 2 3/4 inch deep with the center drawer of the three actually being only 11 inches wide. We are pleased to be offering today this true Victorian burl walnut secretary bookcase desk that dates from the Eastlake era of the 1870s to 1880s. This desk is truly Eastlake as it has the circular dove tail that was used for a short period of time and really pin points the date range of the desk. It came out of a pretty nice estate on the east coast. It appears to have been refinished years ago in a medium walnut stain finish. It has all the hardware intact. All the burl walnut panels are intact. The only thing we did was replace the felt on the pull out tray as the other one was stained. The desk comes with the original wavy glass on the bookcase glass doors top. Three adjustable shelves that appear to be true original shelves, the doors have burl panels on all four sides with ... morerosette covers and even comes with a key. It has a crown molded top, beautiful burl walnut center and the pull tray. The base cabinet sports three graduated drawers with the circular round Eastlake dove tail and carved columns coming down both sides and lots of burl walnut. The overall size is 40 inches at the widest point, 23 inches deep, 31 inches high to the writing surface and 87 inches high overall. One thing I would like to add is that these desks usually have white wood sides or non walnut sides, but this one is truly all walnut as you can see in the numerous pictures. The original backboards are all in place. The desk is a nice original desk. The more I look at it, it appears like they just put a clear coat of shellac on it to brighten it up back years ago. A very nice antique. Circa 1860's, solid walnut secretary bookcase in transitional Rococo to Renaissance Revival style. Two piece construction. The bookcase has a serpentine crest, the doors with arched wavy glass panels. The interior has three adjustable yellow maple selves and maple back boards. Just below the bookcase are two drawers. The secretary case at top has a drop forward writing surface. Below are three long drawers with carved nuts and leaves grips. The drawer interiors are maple. It measures 7'11" 95" tall by 3'8" 44" wide 21" deep, the shelves 9-1/2" deep. The felt writing surface measures 36" by 10-3/4" Very good plus condition: original unworn finish, carvings complete. 1880's Victorian Walnut Desk Secretary This estate item is ready to use as is. Looks all original with exception of the felt on desktop. It looks quite newly replaced. There is typical wear to surface from normal use over the years. Beautiful original wavy glass doors on bookcase. There are small brass curtain rods on interior doors. One of them is missing. Sometimes people used these to put curtains in the bookcase to hide their books. Drawer construction is dovetail all corners front and back!
