The chair shown to give a sense of scale Item# 110105PII25 This is a remarkably well preserved English Georgian Mahogany Kneehole Desk from the third quarter of the 18th century. It is crafted of well figured solid single boards of Mahogany on the top and sides- there is no veneer on this desk. Just solid boards of full grain mahogany. A simply molded edge runs the perimeter of the top, each corner scalloped. Each drawer is hand dovetailed front and back, with thin oak frame construction and thin oak drawer bottoms- all drawers are fully original and lack any adjustments and restorations to the secondary construction. Glowing hand forged brass hardware adorns each drawer. Appearing to have never been removed from the piece. Inside each drawer, as well as the tiny door in the kneehole area, silver metal locks are secured and functional. Each lock appears to be original, each uniquely cut on the right hand corner for all small drawers- it would appear the craftsman was presented with the challenge of making the lock of his choice fit the small space in conjunction with the pull hardware, and overcame this but cutting the corners of each lock. Hand made screws are visible throughout the lock hardware. While we cannot say for certain if the key is original, it is of the period, hand made and very similar in metal color to that of the locks. Each drawer is lip-molded and slides flawlessly in and out of the desk. Just below the top drawer is a secret drawer compartment. Appearing to be part of the frame design, but actually pulls outward smoothly as an extra hand dovetailed drawer. The wide top drawer pulls out to reveal a full dust shelf. Every surface shows hand planing marks on this classic and functional furniture. The beautifully figured one-board drop front rests on pull out supports. Lock and key work. Inside are tiny drawers with exquisite dovetail joints and compartments for papers- old India ink stains show this was a working desk. Brasses appear original on lower hand dovetailed drawers with chamfered bottoms. The bottom drawer has a warp, also there are numerous shrinkage separations from age, see photos. English Mahogany Schoolmaster's Antique Desk w/ Slanted Leather Top Late 19th Century w/ Ebonized Reeded Legs in the George III Style Item# 130009FPX20 This is a just lovely English Antique Schoolmaster's desk. Crafted in the late 19th Century of solid mahogany, mahogany veneers and pine secondaries. The slanted top provides a fine writing surface, covered in a warm-khaki tone tooled leather; lifting over original brass hinges, the interior retains what is probably an original blue paper liner and reveals a large storage space. Every aspect of the top is crafted with dovetails, from the tiny inkwells to the joinery of the entire slant front portion of the desk. Two small hand dovetailed drawers retain their original stamped brass hardware, framed in ebonized stringer inlays and retaining the same light blue papered liner. The desk ... morerests over boldly reeded and ebonized legs that terminate simply in stumped toes. Simply gorgeous for anyone decorating their home and looking for a great form in the hallway or entry way. A highly unique side table for a living room or a small writing desk to actually use for work and storage, this is a wonderful selection. With a warm patina and mellowing of the mahogany surfaces, remaining in quite wonderful condition throughout, this is a piece you will cherish for a lifetime. It is possible the piece was originally crafted mostly during the early 19th Century and was re-fashioned slightly or at least restored during the late 19th Century- there is some curious work with the dowel restorations around the drawer blades. The lack of matching between the screw wells in the frame to the underside of the slant front desk(though we have not attempted to remove the slant front to truly examine this) As such, it should be assumed as a late 19th Century work of simply gorgeous form, but should not be collected as pure or without alteration. Circa 18670. The desk boasts a dark sage green& gold tool leather surrounded a by a rounded thumb moulded edge top. Below, there are 9 large working graduated drawers to one side. The cock-beaded drawers feature brass key escutcheons and later very good quality turned brass shaped swan neck handles. All drawers and cupboard doors feature working locks and keys. To the back of the desk, there are a further three working drawers and below, there are two large working cupboards with hinged doors. Each cupboard features a fixed shelf. Each drawer and cupboard door features lovely quality thumb moulded fronts and boast a stunning grain configuration. This desk is outfitted with eight drawers. Including a double sized file drawer, twin pull out writing tabs, hand tooled leather top, nice original brasses and finish. The partners side of the desk has faux drawer facings. Both sides and the knee hole is accented with paneled moldings and very attractive base molding surrounding each of its double pedestals. The desk is in good condition with just a few small mars to the original lather top all well within acceptable limits given its about 150 years old.
