Antique writing desk secretary 1800's Please read provenance.
This rare and ornately beautiful writing desk was discovered at the estate sale of the heirs of Mrs. Theodore Peterson of Boston. The desk came with a handwritten history of the desk. Said to have been bought by Mrs Peterson in England sometime in the 1800's. Mrs. Peterson is said to be the mother of civil war officer Homer Black's wife. Eugenie Peterson. Mrs. Peterson died in Harrisburg in 1924 according to the timeline document. The estate sale conductors claimed that the desk had hand written letters from civil war officer Black in it but they were removed by the family to be kept in the family. I have done no personal research to support the letter's claim and thus do not guarantee the claim of the letter or the estate sale conductor's story but I will include the letter that came with it. The condition is amazing considering ... moreits age. The drawer pulls are missing. The leather top is worn out and separated at the seam, the top handle is missing, there is some damage where the pull or possibly a latch was originally, there is missing veneer on the right side of the top. See pics. Despite all this, the dovetail joints are tight, the hinges are set in place and the only odor it emits is that of wood. No smoke or mildew, just good old wood smell. I will carefully pack and ship to the lower 48 for $18.00 and I will ship to other locations at a calculated rate depending on country or location.

The drawers are all dove tailed joined indicating earlier era construction and show aged wood inside. Here's what I stated about this gorgeous cabinet's condition: One wood split crack and chip of inlaid veneer marquetry on front middle of bottom drawer. The drawers have some resistance when pulling out. But the can be pulled out completely and fairly easily, but just have some snug fit little tug drag to them, as does the slide out writing desk platform, but not at all a problem and just not real easy and loose pulling out. Some minor surfaces scratches, but other than these remarkably well preserved and beautiful condition dovetail joined antique writing desk cabinet. Truly an incredibly beautiful and stand out showcase piece that is hard to find one as remarkably crafted as this. So you may want to grab it quick, before it is gone! Beautiful old paw foot desk with elaborate articulate feet. The best feet I've seen.the carving is amazing from all angles.toes. Tufts, fur, nails. The desk is in lovely condition. Cherished and not abused, from a non-smoking home. My parents bought it in Charlottesville, VA in the early 1970s. Beautiful striped veneer vertically across the slanted top. The dovetails are not hand cut and irregular. But are consistent. Online I found this description: A close inspection shows no irregular saw cuts or variation from a skilled craftsman, but rather a precise and identical manufactured machined joint. These machine-cut dovetails are as strong and long lasting as the hand-made joints, and became the standard of better American furniture ever since the late 1890's. So this desk may be very late 1800s or early 1900s. Another indication is that the back is not multiple boards. But appears to be an early plywood? There is a tiny hole drilled in the back where I think my dad had our phone(land line) cord come in so the phone could be in the desk. Regardless, it is a beautiful old desk. It measures approx 13-5/8" long. 9-1/2" deep,and 3" high on the back section. The top lid folds down to reveal a writing surface, still has the old velvet, the ribbon is a recent replacement of course. Under this is a storage area for papers or documents. The top section folds up, for a storage area for pens, inkwells and accessories. Antique Traveler's Folding Walnut Writing Desk/ Box/ Secretary* All Original This is a late 19th century portable. Or traveling, writing desk. It is 13 3/4" wide, 8 3/4" deep when closed, and 4" high closed. It is made of nicely figured walnut with brass reinforcements. Everything is completely original. The exterior finish has very fine crazing which is not obvious- you must view it at an acute angle in the light- and VERY few of the minor marks these things usually pick up over a century. There is no real damage or dings. I do not have the key. The hinges are completely solid. The interior wood finish is in nearly the same condition but has about a half dozen wear spots. The velvet pad is original. It is split across the boxe's hinge but I believe it may have been made that way- there in no fraying- and the tab to ... morelift the bottom section is missing. The only real problem is that the velvet, which acts as the hinge for the two compartment lids, is loose from the frame of the box's lid as seen in the fourth pic; this is easily repaired. The compartments are clean and include the original dust. There are two ink bottles- one with its original pewter collar and lid and the other is missing the pewter pieces. The lid for the pen/pencil compartment has ink spilled on it(seen in the pics) but this should clean off if you know how to do that. Antique 19th century Chic Shabby French Renaissance Revival Painted Wood Secretary Writing Desk Fabulous late 19th century antique secretary writing desk in a french renaissance revival style. repainted most likely in the 1930's 40's. Gorgeous creamy color. With black paint peeking through. Accented beautifully with gold incised detailing. This desk is so UNIQUE. It's hard to know where to begin! Two thick beveled glass doors open up to small cupboards that flank a center galleried top portion of the two piece desk. Underneath each is a small drawer with beautiful hardware. The base of the writing desk features a small drawer with an additional felted pullout for writing. The base and legs are just as stunning with all the intertwined woodwork.
