Vintage Poul Volther Frem Rojle Chair Danish Modern Project Wegner Style MCM
This auction is for one vintage Frem Rojle Poul Volther designed project chair. We bought this chair to restore. At the time we were trying to find a forth chair to finish our set and we found this one that needed a lot of attention. When we found it. Someone had badly painted it white and added some extra holes to it. Fortunately they didn't paint the woven seat. We started to remove the white paint. That was as far as we made it before we found one in perfect condition to finish our set. So now we are passing this project on. Besides the white paint, they added a two bolts to the left rear leg and two extra bolts to the right side of the chair where the seat back attaches. They split the wood on the back rest when they added the extra bolts. I had planned on filling all the extra holes and fixing the splits in the backrest once I got ... morethe whole chair properly stripped and then refinishing it back to it's original glory. The woven seat with the manufacture stamp on the rear corner is in good condition. One joint needs to be clamped together but the chair is not loose or compromised in any way. It is a very minor separation(pictured) The chair measures 28.5"W x 26"D x 30.5"H. Even though an unlicensed Wegner chair, this is an incredible design, very comfortable and accurate to the Carl Hansen version with the exception of the upholstered back instead of a plywood back. I pulled the ad for this chair at that time(I'm reposting as of 9-20-13) Since then. I was able to find replacement vintage Westnofa straps from the same Ingmar Relling chair model. They are of the same webbing material as the rest of the chair, however they are slightly darker. Please look closely at the last two photos to see the new straps- the first ten pictures were taken with the original straps in place. When I replaced the bottom straps I also re-glued the bottom front stretcher ... moreboard to the side frame boards. Now. PP MOBLER PP19 Papa Bear Chair--Hans Wegner, Teak, w/Ottoman, NOT a reproduction
For sale is an original 1950's PP MØBLER PP19 Papa Bear chair made from teak. And designed by Hans Wegner. This chair is not a reproduction. It includes the matching Ottoman. And is in excellent to above excellent condition for an original mid-century chair of this type. These chairs(also known as Teddy Bear chairs) are coveted and iconic. And are one of the most popular and enduring examples of mid-century Danish designs. This chair has NOT been reupholstered. There are no clearly noticeable or significant fabric tears or stains. The teak itself is really in amazing condition considering this is a 60 year old chair. Only upon very close inspection will you find a few very small imperfections. A few of the legs have light scratches about an inch off the ground where it looks like a vacuum cleaner may have touched them. But these ... moresimply do not stand out and you really have to look to find them. Other than this. There are virtually no other scratches or defects in the finish anywhere else on the wood. It is highly unlikely that you will come across an original Papa Bear Chair in this condition, anywhere. This chair was originally purchased by a family friend in San Diego from a local Danish furniture dealer in the 1950's. It was kept for much of its life under cover and unused. The seat cushion. But not the back or side cushions, crunches when depressed due to its age. The buyer may wish to have the seat cushion re-padded, or alternatively, it may be that the crunching goes away as the padding is reused and the horsehair underneath is loosened up after years of non-use. We recently received a response from PP Mobler who was kind enough to offer an opinion on the validity of the chair with the following comment: To us your chair looks authentic and original. Back in the 50/60’s they did not mark the chairs. So that’s why you cannot find a stamp or mark. This chair has also been evaluated by two local mid-century furniture dealers. SABRE-LEGGED, BLOND, VARNISHED FOLDING CHAIR and MATCHING OTTOMAN, with NATURAL WOVEN CORD SEATING. The chair measures 24" in width x 30" in depth x 29" in height. The matching ottoman measures 20" in length x 15" in width x 15 3/8" in height. What is particularly nice about this iconic ensemble is not only that there's a matching ottoman that comes with the folding chair, but that the wood's finish is not stained with the darker, walnut-looking stain, often seen in the Yugoslavian produced pieces of furniture after the original Wegner design. The wood is lightly varnished, giving it a blond, clean look. Lighter than the ... morephotos suggest. The light natural woven cord seating and backrest are a handsome marriage with the wood frames, acting quietly in concert with the frames and not standing out against them in stark contrast.
