It seems that since the first Nichols set foot into the New World. They've been producing fine quality chairs and passing on that skill to the next generation. As early as 1762, there was a Nichols Brothers Chair Manufactory in Westminster, Massachusetts, which was worked by bewhiskered Nichols too numerous to mention. As the country grew, the Nichols' chair business grew, too. By 1857. It was already an established company that became the benchmark in craftsmanship. At the turn of the century, the business was moved to neighboring Gardner, Massachusetts to gain easier access to the railway. The second of two fires leveled the plant, but adversity was turned into opportunity. An updated brick factory was opened in 1907 by Charles Nichols, with his new partner Reuben Stone, under the name Nichols& Stone. Having survived these natural disasters. Nichols& Stone continued to expand. By the 1930s, Edmund L. Nichols and Albert Stone had taken the helm. Responding to consumer preferences at the time, they pioneered in merchandising by specializing in Windsor chairs and Boston rockers, building the brand awareness still enjoyed today.

Vintage Maple Ethan Allen Hitchcock Style Stencil Painted Pouting Chair
This is a beautiful vintage pouting stool in excellent condition. The cloth label was removed but looks to be either Ethan Allen or Hitchcock. Beautiful painted stencil back and antique gold painted accents on the legs. The condition is excellent with very little general wear. The painted foot balls have moderate wear to the paint but could be retouched. The cushion is soft with a little discoloration and a very small hole on the side(see closeup) The chair overall is very sturdy and strong with no splits or breaks. It measures 41" tall at the back and 19" on the leg width. Thank you!

This sturdy pair of twin. Gently used vintage black and gold stenciled chairs still have their original 1.5" by 3.5" heavy paper labels stapled to the underside of their seats stating, Manufactured by Boling Chair Company, Siler City, NC, Pattern 264, Color Black A. The High Point Bending and Chair Company became the Boling Chair Company in 1956 and the chairs have been in our donor's family for'many years' So these beautiful chairs probably date from the early 1960s. The Boling Company is renowned for its quality workmanship. As noted in the Condition remarks there is some wear in the gold stenciling in places. And the chairs have accumulated some minor nicks and scrapes over the years. But overall, these two chairs are in remarkably good condition. They are surprisingly heavy at just under 10 lbs each; they feel solid ... moreand the rush seats are in amazingly good condition on both top and bottom. For the most part the stenciled designs are delightfully clear. The chairs stand 33 1/2 inches tall, and the seat is 17 W x 15 D by 18 H. The stenciling is very much in the same style as Hitchcock chairs produced in the same era. These chairs are available for free local pickup in Olympia WA or we can deliver them to a Tacoma or Seattle location for a negotiated fee. We would really prefer not to try shipping them.
