The rocking chair has the traditional rolling seat, curved arms, and seven thin and concave spindles which support the lower back. There is a crack in the center spindle, but it does not seem to affect the chair's use. There is also slight movement in the legs, but they are not lose. This chair easily supports my 230 lbs, and it is very comfortable. This is a great example of a Boston Rocker and the worn surfaces highlight the chair's comfort and longevity. Vintage George Nelson / Herman Miller Maple Arm Chair ~ Mid Century ~ Excellent
This is a Vintage Modernist Arm Chair designed by George Nelson for the Zeeland. Michigan furniture company of Herman Miller. Condition is excellent, showing little normal wear. The wood finish is original. The fabric has been professionally reupholstered in a beautiful Modernist pattern of slate blue circles against a tan/blue background which compliments the natural wood perfectly. The chair dates to the 1950's and has been well cared for. The chair measures 31 1/2 inches tall by 22 3/4 inches wide and 22 inches deep. Seat height is 16 1/2 inches and arm height is 25 1/2 inches, and was made for comfort. Please see the photos which were taken outdoors in natural light to show the quality and condition of this chair. The label has become detached from the chair as shown in the photo. It has very minimal signs of usage. There is some minimal wear on the seat as well as a very light scuff mark at the top of the back of the chair from it being bumped against a wall. Neat maple or cherry paddle arm chair as shown with a single drawer under the arm. Very unusual. In overall near excellent original condition. Does have some negligible scratches here and there but really crisp and clean. No visible maker's mark however someone will recognize the chair. The estate this chair is in is loaded with traditional Heywood Wakefield Old Colony furniture and Cushman so my guess is that this chair was made by one of these two companies. No. 7290 is marked on the underside of the chair- maybe a clue to its maker. Chair only- no cushions or upholstery. Anyway. Pickup in New Haven, CT within 7 days of auction end. From what I think I've learned.I think the started sometime in the mid 19th century and continued in operation until about 1980 or so. I think they are maple.but don't quote me on that.I'm no wood expert. My guess is these quality chairs are from around the 1960's.
