They've been producing fine quality chairs and passing on that skill to the next generation. As early as 1762, there was a Nichols Brothers Chair Manufactured in Westminster, Massachusetts, as the country grew; the Nichols' chair business grew, too. By 1857, it was already an established company that became the benchmark in craftsmanship. At the turn of the century, the business was moved to neighboring Gardner, Massachusetts to gain easier access to the railway. The second of two fires leveled the plant, but adversity was turned into opportunity. We are pleased to offer this vintage pair of Nichols and Stone side chairs. The chairs feature black painted finish with heavy stenciled details. The chairs are a ladder back. Windsor design with a spindle back section at the lower back area. The stenciled details are found on the chair backs and the seat fronts. The pattern features a large urn/fruit bowl in the center back and a leaf stencil in other areas. The pair have nice, substantial front legs of turned wood with gold leaf accents. The chairs are solid wood and in very good with minor signs of age/use. There are some minor scratches and scuffs to the black paint which are not distracting and which can be resolved. The stenciled areas are very good. There are no structural issues and the chairs are sturdy and heavy. This is a nice pair of designer chairs with a slightly different style ... morethan often seen. Syracuse University Chair in Black w/ Gold Seal -- Vintage Nichols & Stone
These are vintage. Authentic Nichols& Stone chairs in the Windsor Liberty model. N&S was the oldest furniture manufacturer in the USA operating from 1762- 2008(246 years) The new manufacturer of the N&S chair that bought production rights changed it and the quality is not the same. Either. It would cost a lot more than twice($550) as much for the new N&S chairs, too. You cannot buy the same ones with the same detail and quality anywhere today. The chairs for sale here are now not only vintage put pure collector's antique items. The Syracuse University seal is silkscreened onto the backs in gold leaf. The chair is stained black and the arms are cherry. One chair is more worn than the other. As shown in a picture of the back near the seal, but this can be stained or lightly spray painted. There are places on both chairs ... morethat can"done over" but I chose not to touch them up(you can see in two pictures a little apparent white paint spot on the top of one chair's back, as an example) Neither chair's condition is much better than the other, but we can get into details if you only want one chair(including more pictures) No major scratches or defects. Minor wear and tear. Heavy and sturdy- weigh 24 lbs. each. The leg bottoms take a carpet saver. Not all four legs of each have them. So remove or replace. You could easily touch these up and even cover the Syracuse logo on the back and make it all black or put your own seal/decal on it. EARLY 1950'S - VINTAGE NICHOLS AND STONE ROCKER
This auction is local pick-up only. For your consideration is a Nichols and Stone Company. Gardener, Massachusetts rocker which was purchased by my parents in late 1952 to early 1953, in preparation for rocking a baby(me) who was soon to arrive. I am now 61 and can say that this rocker has been in our family at least since the time of my birth in mid 1953. The finish on the rocker is original and has never been restored or touched up. The wax or varnish has dried in places and is flaking off. Revealing unfinished wood beneath. Please see the pictures. I'm not an authority on wood, but I believe it to be maple. It is marked 1 MAP. Pair of RARE Vintage NICHOLS STONE Windsor Arm Chairs- Maple Two amazing chairs made by the Nichols Stone Company in Gardner. Massachusetts. These chairs are in wonderful condition with their original finish. They look as though they were well-loved and taken care of, with minimal wear commensurate with age. All spindles are original and intact. There are a few leg joints that look as though they have a touch of glue(see last photo) but are very sturdy with no wobbles. The original label with the item# stamp and date are all on the underside of each seat. One chair has an area that someone has tried to repair(see picture) and all chairs need the lower rungs tightened/glued. My husband tried to. But I would like a professional to do it.
