I believe it is solid maple with an Old Pine ... morefinish and probably dates to the 1950s/60s. It has bamboo style turned legs with a barrel shaped midsection and an overall colonial style. Nichols & Stone began making furniture in the 1850s and finally closed up shop around 2008. They have since been reincarnated under the Stickley name and are available again in some limited forms. HARVARD CHAIR Original Traditional 1950's Nichols & Stone Co Windsor Gardner MA
This is an original HARVARD CHAIR made in the late 1950's. It is from my best friend whose parent went to Harvard and bought four of these. Back then it was made by the originator of the Windsor Harvard chair. Nichols& Stone from Gardner Mass. That is what these are. They are now made by FW Lombard I believe. But this is the ORIGINAL! It is solid and heavy. I don't think I can ship it. If you know of a way. Please let me know. But for now, let's just say Local Pick Up only. Claud Bunyard was consigned for a short period by Nichols& Stone. Gardner Mass. in the early 1980's for a few pieces. These chairs are signed and dated Nov 4, 1980. The auction is for a set of two and they are in most excellent condition with no repairs or damage, well taken care of. Made of Red Oak. 33" high. 21 3/4" from outside edges of the arms across, seat is 17 7/8" from front to back, 20 1/2" across the width of the seat, 16 5/8" from the floor to the seat top, legs are 21 1/2" from the outside of the two front and two back legs, the side legs are just over 19" from base to base. seat is about 1 1/2" thick. We are pleased to offer this vintage pair of Nichols and Stone side chairs. The chairs feature black painted finish with heavy stenciled details. The chairs are a ladder back. Windsor design with a spindle back section at the lower back area. The stenciled details are found on the chair backs and the seat fronts. The pattern features a large urn/fruit bowl in the center back and a leaf stencil in other areas. The pair have nice, substantial front legs of turned wood with gold leaf accents. The chairs are solid wood and in very good with minor signs of age/use. There are some minor scratches and scuffs to the black paint which are not distracting and which can be resolved. NICHOLS AND STONE WINDSOR BACK ROCKING CHAIR Black with Gold Fruit/ Floral Stencil PICK UP ONLY PLEASE! For your consideration I am offering a Nichols and Stone. Windsor Style Black Rocking Chair. With gold stenciling, from GARDNER MASSACHUSETTS. This vintage. Quality rocking chair in its original finish showing wear consistent with age(see photos) The arm rests show paint wear from usage, and the fruit/floral gold stenciling is fading in many areas of the chair. The black paint is still nice and shiny and I don't see any nicks in the wood, other than one spindle that has a crack at the top near the head of the rocker. The spindle is still in place, but does have some movement if pressure is applied. This could easily be repaired with a little wood glue. Otherwise, the feet look great and the rocker rocks just fine. The piece still has ... morepart of the original tag affixed underneath that reads, NICHOLS AND STONE. A beautiful piece of quality furniture from one of Americas finest chair makers. In very good original condition with many more years of usage in it's future. One chair has an area that someone has tried to repair(see picture) and all chairs need the lower rungs tightened/glued. My husband tried to. But I would like a professional to do it.
