Vintage Thonet Gull Wing Side Arm Chair Mid-Century Modern Molded Plywood
Great look and it is sound and solid but has been painted. It looks like a red primer first then brown on top.It was done many years ago as there is wear to the paint. Also there is a 1/16" deep by 1" wide by 5" long piece of veneer missing from the furniture grade plywood that this is made of. It is at the base of the one arm and it is common to have a problem there as the veneer wants to buckle when they steam form them in to place. It usually blisters and cracks there. If you are going to strip it and take it back to the original blonde finish you'll need to replace it with the natural plywood veneer strip. If you are going to repaint it you just paint over top. Fill it with wood filler or just patch it in with any veneer strip you can find. It sets very comfortable. This Listing is for two Eames DCM cowhide chairs circa 1970. It seems that both came from the estate of the original owner who at one point started to refurbish them. But came up short. Both are in functional condition, but they need some work. It is possible that the eames chair with black feet is not an original cowhide DCM chair, but that it was possibly made to match the DCM chair with white feet, which has slightly more wear consistent with a chair from the 1970 period. The tags and stamps are not on the chairs, however there are areas of discoloration which seem consistent with what original Eames cowhide chairs tags and stamps would have been. This all being said. They are charming and quite rare examples of classic Eames, particularly since the comfortable cowhide surface denotes a uniquely american response to the overwhelming danish/european ... moreinfluence of the mid century modern design movement. They are wonderful and functional in their current condition.and though they would need some restoration to become showroom caliber pieces, they are by far superior in comfort, historical relevance, and rare styling than the many knockoffs and modern day reproductions that are available new today. These chairs in excellent condition often sell for between $1000- $2000 per chair. However, these chairs are listed for only $445 for BOTH chairs, shipping included. I am told proper refurbishing or restoration typically increases the value a significant amount in these types of circumstances, however I have not looked into this myself regarding these chairs. The finish is a medium, to medium-dark brown. 30 1/2" tall, 18" deep, 18 1/2" wide and weighs 16 pounds. Condition: Normal wear for this vintage. Two small nicks on the edge of the seat. Some small scuffs a round the edges. Wear to the finish on the back rest. Several scuffs around the base of the legs. Sturdy and comfortable. Overall, good to very good condition. It is tight and sturdy with very little light wear of a couple tiny nicks and light surface mark on legs. They could be easily polished out if you need it to look brand new. Not signed, but definitely in that style. My friend is an experienced dealer in mid century modern furniture and he has never seen this size. There is VERY slight warping as one leg does not touch the floor by about 1/2 inch. However. With just a few pounds of pressure on the seat, the chair becomes very stable. This warping is probably do to the construction. The only other minor issues I see is a small green paint line on the front of the back support and a small area of drips on the seat. Please look at the photos and ask ... moreany questions you may have. These issues are barely noticeable and could be removed by a restorer very easily. The chair measures 19 inches high. The seat is 11 1/2" wide and 10" high at the front and 9" at the back. If you chose to bid and are not satisfied for ANY reason. Your money will be immediately refunded upon return of the chair in the same condition. I value my 100% satisfaction feedback and will quickly resolve any issue.
