They've been producing fine quality chairs and passing on that skill to the next generation. As early as 1762, there was a Nichols Brothers Chair Manufactured in Westminster, Massachusetts, as the country grew; the Nichols' chair business grew, too. By 1857, it was already an established company that became the benchmark in craftsmanship. At the turn of the century, the business was moved to neighboring Gardner, Massachusetts to gain easier access to the railway. The second of two fires leveled the plant, but adversity was turned into opportunity. This is an original HARVARD CHAIR made in the late 1950's. It is from my best friend whose parent went to Harvard and bought four of these. Back then it was made by the originator of the Windsor Harvard chair. Nichols& Stone from Gardner Mass. That is what these are. They are now made by FW Lombard I believe. But this is the ORIGINAL! This chair was made in 1974 by the Nichols& Stone Co. of Gardner. Massachusetts. It a children's model with a custom finish featuring the United States Military Academy crest across the top. The wood in is extremely good condition with no cracks, bows or splits. The all original finish has some cracking on the seat and wear on the rockers and corner of the seat. Nichols and Stone a name that has been around since as early as 1762. Round kitchen table is 57 1/2 inches. When adding the two leaves the table become oval and is 69 inches long. Comes with four matching Captain's chairs. They are all stamped with the Nichols and Stone stamp. The table itself is not stamped and has a laminate top for durability. The table has some nicks along the edge consistent with age but, can be fixed easily with some Old English oil. You need only to look for the Nichols and Stone shield burned into each piece to verify your choice of the finest solid wood furniture made by by oldest furniture name in America. Grime, smudges,some discoloration, etc. It does need work but in the end you will have a beautiful rocking chair for years to come. Measurements are: 40.5 inches high, 24 inches across at the arms, and the seat is about 19.25" deep. This item is a"Pick Up in Person Only" type of auction. It is too big to pack. Massachusetts This wonderful child size traditional rocking chair was made by the Nichols& Stone Company in Gardner. Massachusetts. This American made"Boston rocking chair" is perfect for your child, pet, doll, stuffed animal, etc. It is in good used condition. There are some nicks/ scratches/ dings/ wear from use and age. Most of these could be made even less obvious by oiling the entire rocking chair(perhaps with Old English oil) Both the seat of the rocker and the top are shaped for comfort. It is stamped with the maker's logo on the underside of the seat. The letters NS are inside a double"shield" The words NICHOLS& STONE CO GARDNER MASS form a circle around the shield logo. The four"legs" and the ... moretwo spindles under each arm have the traditional incised lines around the dowels. The chair is very solid. Sometime in the distant past someone puts a screw through the bottom of the seat and on rocker rung. The screw-heads look like old style screws. Again. The rocker is solid and has no wobble or loose joints. Please see the photos for more on condition. This is a vintage piece and has had some use. But, still a great collectible childs chair with lots of life left in it. Nichols& Stone chairs are always made of selected northern hardwoods. But we are not sure which types of wood were used for this chair. This lot is for a pair of Windsor Style chairs by NICHOLS& STONE CO. out of Gardner. MA The chairs are painted a dark green. They look black. But in the sunlight they are dark green. They measure 19 1/2" W x 21 1/4" D x 39 1/4" H Seat Height is 17 1/2" Paint is chipping in many areas. The bottom foot rung looks as if a dog has chewed them. But it is not. Probably from shoes scrapping on them. Chairs are structurally sound and very sturdy. They need to be painted or stripped. Chairs weigh 11 pounds each. Shipping/Delivery: Delivery to NYC is $125.00. For sale is a nice rare Nichols and Stone rocking chair. The chair has a nice stencil design. The chair does have some scratches and wear but nothing that couldn't be fixed within minutes. The chair is engraved/carved with a Nichols and Stone logo on the bottom and it also has a orange Nichols and Stone label. This is a full sized rocking chair not a child's. With gold stenciling, from GARDNER MASSACHUSETTS. This vintage. Quality rocking chair in its original finish showing wear consistent with age(see photos) The arm rests show paint wear from usage, and the fruit/floral gold stenciling is fading in many areas of the chair. The black paint is still nice and shiny and I don't see any nicks in the wood, other than one spindle that has a crack at the top near the head of the rocker. The spindle is still in place, but does have some movement if pressure is applied. This could easily be repaired with a little wood glue. Otherwise, the feet look great and the rocker rocks just fine. The piece still has ... morepart of the original tag affixed underneath that reads, NICHOLS AND STONE. A beautiful piece of quality furniture from one of Americas finest chair makers. In very good original condition with many more years of usage in it's future.
