There are a few damaged spots in the burled walnut veneer (see pictures), and a couple of splits in some of the side panels (see pictures). The joinery helped in dating this piece to prior to the industrial age with it's hand carved ducktails in the drawer and the ornate eagle talon/claw and ball feet tend to point towards an upper east coast, i.e. New York, Rhode Island, Maryland, origin probably sometime around 1850-1860. The only maker's or craftsman mark are the numbers 1111 carved into the bottom of the desk and 1114 carved into the bottom of the drawer. When we do a desk like this. We basically strip it down the bare finish, replace/retighten glue blocks to make sure it is tight and sturdy, sand, plane or whatever it takes to make this piece amazing. We are one of the few that actually tear down the canvas and re-canvas the roll because that is one of the things that many people pass over and then two years down the road the roll needs replacing. You won’t run into that problem with our roll tops and we will match our finish to anyone in the trade as we have been doing this for over 40 years! We are pleased to have an item look as beautiful as this desk. ... moreThe desk has 37 individual raised panels inserted on the construction of the desk. All of the components are original except for the brass knobs on the small drawers of the interior. After gluing to insure tightness, we go through and hand sand, multiple coats stain, apply multiple coats of Sherwin Williams lacquer, scuff and sand between the hand rubbed coats and finally top the table off with multiple coats of moisture resistant lacquer. We leave some of the characteristics mark in as you can see on the backside of the desk where there are a couple of little areas where they had old time repairs. The desk is simply stunning in a satin sheen lacquer. It is unusual to find a desk like this with as many raised panels and a semi full interior. The interior has 13 drawers, with pencil tray pulls, pencil drawers and carved handles. There are three slots for the letters and numerous pigeon holes. The desk was made by Standard, who was very competitive to Derby, and they made a rounded corner heavy duty piece. We have made sure that the locks work and come with keys. This style of Victorian desk was called a"Davenport" after its English inventor or a"ship captain's" desk because it made efficient use of space on board. Solid walnut. This American made furniture was restored some years ago. The gleaming hand rubbed finish is in excellent condition, there is a shrinkage separation from age, see photos. Side drawers have"racetrack" moldings and carved walnut motif pulls and were rebuilt. The writing surface is leather with gold tooling. Underneath are tiny cubicles for papers and a velvet lining. 100 yr. Old Painted Desk We have several old antique items to sell at my folks old house that I thought would best be liquidated here on Ebay. This oak secretary or writing chest is absolutely wonderful and is so much more attractive in person than the pictures. Every authentic antique painted piece of furniture of this nature is original unique and of its own beauty and this one is no exception. Green color is rich and deeper green in person than with camera flash. The green is likely an old oil based enamel or lead paint. The top surface is glared in a couple pictures appearing a different color but it is the same green color as the rest of the cabinet. The paint is not flaking or pealing but is still very strong adhering all over. Loads of character and charm. The whole piece is solid as a brick and not rickety or wobbly. I don't see ... moreany repairs or cracks etc. Typical wear that would be indigenous to this period and stature. I took a close up of damage on interior of the door around the drop hinge arm. Drawers function well and door closes nicely. I particularly like the shaker style going narrower to the floor as seen in the side profile. The detail in curvature of the drawer fronts is unique as well. There has been no back on the cabinet for many years. I have seen hundreds of secretaries in my days but have never seen this particular style before. This little cabinet is simply divine and could be used in so many rooms of a home to suite your taste. However, they were made roughly around the same time and really look good together today. Marrying a top and bottom is not an uncommon practice. The top section has two adjustable shelves behind two old wavy glass doors. These shelves adjust by sliding in and out of grooves. This section also locks and a key is provided. Below the bookcase top is the actual antique butlers desk section. Closed it appears to be a chest of drawers. But the top drawer opens, the front flips down, and it reveals a wonderful desk interior. Various drawers and nooks are present for storage and the fall has a black leather insert which has recently been replaced. When open, the desk area measures 36.5″ wide x 18″ deep x 30.25″ from the floor. The drawers below were obviously used as some kind of filing system as each drawer has letters of the alphabet inlaid on them. We are pleased to be offering today this gorgeous Victorian oversize 107” tall butler’s walnut secretary desk that came in recently. We are always intrigued with these and they are always found in the old dark Civil War era finish which is kind of grungy and doesn’t show the walnut right. So. We brought it into the restoration shop to hand strip(which takes a long time, but is well worth it to leave the patina or original color in the wood) hand sand meticulously throughout, stain the same factory color and applied multiple coats of hand rubbed lacquer until it builds up a beautiful semi glow lustrous finish such as this. It has the original glass, original triple adjustable shelves, we had to replace some of the center slats and the crest is original. Everything on this desk is original except for the exterior finish and the felt that we ... morereplaced. The cabinet dates from the 1860s era. We are fortunate enough to get one or two of these every year, but we scour the entire United States to obtain the rare and hard to find items such as this. This desk has gothic block pyramid columns down on the base with spoon carving on the incise carved and picture frame panel doors that open for a large space that probably had a shelf previous. If the buyer would like us to put a shelf behind the doors, we will do so if you tell us at the time of purchase. The cabinet also features panel sides all the way up, which a cheap one would not as it would be plank sides, but this one is walnut all the way. There is Cornish molding all the way around the shapely two doors that open to reveal a triple shelf adjustable height interior, carved columns with diamond points for motifs and big leaves are carving in with dainty little cornices. The top of the cabinet has a double wide crown molding and a large center finial broken arch top. It doesn’t get much better than this. I believe the glass is the original glass because it has a look about it that does not compare to modern glass. It has a lift and slide piece of glass at top. Key holes. Pull down front.
