It is an unusual desk with drawers opening on both sides and one door on both sides. Each side has a center drawer, a right-hand drawer, and a right-hand door. The desk was refinished in the last 10 years or so and whoever it was did a wonderful job. The desk has dainty carved cabriole legs with brass fillagree on the elbows and castors. The drawers are all dove tail with brass ribbed knobs. The doors have locks, but there is no key. The desk is in wonderful condition apart from two small cracks on the solid oak top that has nothing to do with structure and you wouldn’t want to touch it. The overall size is 52 inches wide, 28 inches deep and 30 inches high.

The writing surface is covered in black felt and pulls out to provide a larger area. There is a large overhanging drawer as well as two smaller drawers and a cabinet below, for even more storage. All of the drawers have brass pulls and escutcheons and dovetail joints. The lower area is spoon carved in a charming leaf pattern. This piece most likely dates from the late 1800's. This piece is in good condition. But does have some cosmetic flaws, as is to be expected in a piece of this age. Several of the escutcheons are missing as well as the door pulls on the upper cabinet. The drawer pulls are loose as well and one of the escutcheons looks like it has been reattached. There is a piece of wood missing from the molding below the desk top as well. See picture) There is also significant wear to the felted writing surface. No other significant damage or repairs. The entire desk stands about 88" 7'4" tall. The desk comes with four raised panel dove tail drawers that retain all the original hardware. The center where the legs go have a reverse cove carving, which I have never seen in oak. It has a scallop bottom trim base, raised panels all the way around and a wide bevel edge on the solid tiger sawn oak top. The only negatives I see on the desk is that there is a little wear on the edge of the top from rubbing against something and there is a split going down the center of the top. We most likely could pull the top off and repair the top, which wouldn’t make a huge difference, but it is an expensive repair. The desk itself is high end quality.

There are a few light surface scratches to the finish from general use, but it has been very well cared for, and is in amazing condition. I am unsure of the exact age or manufacture of the piece. It most likely dates to the middle to last part of the 19th Century. It does have some cracking in the front writing surface of the desk, but these areas are superficial thus far. The desk is made of what I believe is mahogany, and has ornately carved accecents on the vitrine shelf supports which are done in reverse scrolls.

It has burl walnut panels coming down both sides, heavy crown molded top and a crest with big ball finials on each end. It has a commode base with three drawers and a door. The only thing I don’t like about this cylinder desk is that the finish is light, similar to a cherry, but it is walnut wood. It has the original heavy bold brass hardware, and is in really nice shape. The pull-out writing surface has green felt on it. When you open the double panel cylinder roll, it reveals a simplistic double drawer interior that is simplistic.

Tall Antique Victorian Oak Cylinder Desk Carved Secretary Glass Front Shelves
Fantastic Victorian era cylinder top desk. Made from oak with pine secondary woods. Panelled back and sides. The large upper cabinet has flexible. Movable shelves and period glass doors. It rests atop a cylinder or roll top desk area with a small drawer and several pigeon holes. The writing surface is covered in black felt and pulls out to provide a larger area. There is a large overhanging drawer as well as two smaller drawers and a cabinet below, for even more storage. All of the drawers have brass pulls and escutcheons and dovetail joints. The lower area is spoon carved in a charming leaf pattern. This piece most likely dates from the late 1800's. This piece is in good condition. But does have some cosmetic flaws, as is to be expected in a piece of this age. Several of the escutcheons are missing as well as the door pulls on the upper ... morecabinet. The drawer pulls are loose as well and one of the escutcheons looks like it has been reattached. There is a piece of wood missing from the molding below the desk top as well. The reverse has 9 dummy drawers which make the desk appear identical from both sides and it is perfect for sitting centrally in a room with the back on display. The desk has a number of very fine quality ... moredetails including hand carved panels at each flank and either side of the kneehole. The upper panels with etched back and crossed oak leaves on twisted branches and the lower panels of trailed ivy wrapped with ribbon. The upper drawers and side panels are dressed with thickly cut and beautifully flamed mahogany. The overhung rounded top is inset with an olive green leather in very good condition with gold tooled and embossed edge detail and gold leaves to each corner. All of the drawers open and close smoothly and have good strong interiors with dovetailed joints. The escutcheons are original throughout. The desk dismantles into three sections- two pedestals and top and has an unusual mechanism whereby the top slots down into the pedestals and wraps around the front- so that it looks very much as though it is made in one piece when all together. Condition: there are minor dings and veneer repairs here and there to the working drawers and some very fine and old grain cracks which are stable and not going anywhere. That dates from the 1880 era. ... moreIt has been completely stripped, re-glued, refinished, the canvas roll has been all re-canvassed, and we had to re-fabricate one handle(bet you can’t tell which one when you see the desk! Any molding damaged was replaced, any panels that were damaged were replaced, any wood damaged or ink-stained was replaced– we do one heck of a job when we go through a desk! The interior has burl walnut pencil trays and cubby drawers, and the original letter holders on both sides of the desk. We’ve even replaced the felt insert with the original factory dark green color. It has an applied beveled edge base, and a finished off back. We always put a reproduction roll-top lock in, which will be done before shipping. The overall size is 54 inches wide, 36 inches deep, 30 inches high to the writing surface from the floor, and 50 inches high to the top of the desk. The lock mechanism prevents the drawers from opening when the roll-top is down. Three drawers and one small lower cabinet. There are nice floral carvings on the top drawer and on the Slant Front door. The drawers do open and close smoothly. There is an old slide lock which seams to have been added a very long time ago to keep the Slant Front door closed. On the inside there are 16 various size compartments and one small drawer. All drawers are dovetailed. The writing area has a leather surface but is worn with some rips to it and should be replaced. Raised picture frame molding is featured on each side of the base with wide recessed carvings on each side of the bookcase top which has a slight Gothic influence. Additional wide recessed carving is present on the slant front portion of the desk with the original pull out support slides intact. This secretary breaks down into two pieces for easier handling during shipping and moving. The original glossy finish has been revarnished over the years and is very well preserved with enough wear for warm antique patina. There are stains. Mars at the edges, shrinkage separations from age and ink stains for character. Waxed and polished, only an occasional wipe with a soft dry cloth is needed to maintain its luster. The drop front key is a handle only, the lock does not work. Inside are cubicles and small drawers. A separate piece for easier moving. The bookcase has a working lock. It is an English antique that was originally made around 1890 featuring barley twist legs and stretcher. It is hard to believe all of the wonderful carved features in this writing desk. Each of the four sides is meticulously carved to great detail. These carvings are the most prominent feature of ... morethe desk. The next thing your eye is drawn to are the barley twist turned legs and stretcher. Using a stretcher between the legs allows the heavy desk to remain sturdy even after all these years. The table top is finished with a nice black leather that has gold tooling. This leather is not the original desk leather. The front of the desk has two drawers that work easily. Their handles are part of the carvings on the drawer fronts. The fully finished and carved back has two faux drawers so it looks just like the front. This antique writing desk is really in excellent condition. It is sturdy and strong and we did not find any repairs or breaks on the carvings. The black leather is near perfect. The table top around the edges shows some old minor signs of wear(tiny dents here and there as you would expect to see) Otherwise this desk has stood the test of time remarkably well and would go great in a variety of surroundings. This is another piece out of my personal stash that I reluctantly need to move. It's a huge desk with so many things going for it. I expect it was made by Mitchell and Rammelsburg even though there is no mark or tag. Very similar in appearance to other examples they made. Is a three piece unit comprising of a base with marble top. Bookcase and crest. All original cleaned finish in superb condition. Tennessee sausage marble tops the base if the butlers desk and bookcase sits above on a step-back. Original wavy seedy glass and crest. Desk needs nothing and is very impressive. It's rare to see a desk like this that is crotch mahogany and not walnut, in this case the mahogany looks better and I'm sure the manufacturer decided that it did too. Original late 19th century(gorgeous from every angle) carved walnut desk. The original brass pulls are well intact. The drawer pulls with ease and it has a lock with no original key. The finish wood at the top and sides of the desk is a fine tight burl veneer. The desk top has been re-covered in its past with a tapestry with chrysanthemums and/or peonies. There are holes, pulls and wear into the tapestry. There is some surface wear in the wood at the corners and areas where one would expect from an item that has seen continued use. It is all intact& strong. At the top are a few very small pieces of burl veneer missing. but the tiny spots are old and smooth from, as above mentioned, continued use.
