There is a name and year written on the bottom of the desk, but it is very faint and can only be seen while hold the desk at a certain angle to the light. I tried to capture the writing in a picture, but could only get the first part of the name. The name stands out the most. The rest of the writing, I believe would be where the owner lived and the year is much fainter. It looks like Maggie C Farr(something) something) 1876 or 1896. The box measures about 11 ¼” x 7 3/4” x 3 ½” closed) Opened and lying flat the desk measures about 16” long. The inside bottom felt writing surface that lifts up is tight and strong while the top felt writing surface that lifts up is wiggly, but still very much intact. Very nice old lap desk. Nice Antique Circa late 1800's walnut slanted lap desk/writing cabinet. Brass hinged cover flips open to a removable felt writing surface with storage for documents and paper underneath. Two individual inkwell compartments are separated by a long compartment that stores pens and other writing materials. It is removable and does need some reinforcement(gluing) One glass inkwell remains. Very good condition with a minor crack in wood where it meets the left corner. The underside panel has separated but is still intact to piece. Lock and key still work well but need some adjusting to make it lock. Inside there are few compartments and appears as original felt. However due to an age and use, it is seperated as shown in picture as well. ANTIQUE WRITING DESK– NO RESERVE Acquired at an estate sale in Virginia is this antique wood folding lap writing desk. Unknown type of wood- does have a cedar smell on the inside. Inside in many areas written in pencil is dated information from the 1800’s. Some of the writing with signatures is faded and difficult to read. Some the years can be read are“June 1894” 465 letters” March 15& 16 1895” March( 17, 1877” and“July( 18, 1875” There is no structural damage to the box. There are no apparent breaks or repairs. Hinges are securely in place. Closed the desk measures 3 ¾ inches tall. 11 ¼ inches long and 7 ¾ inches wide. Open the desk measures 15-3/4 inches long. 11-1/4 inches wide and 1-1/4 inches to 2-1/2 inches tall(slopes up) Writing area has ink stains and is loose in one area– see photos. Glass inkwell without cap ... moreis included. Two pencils are also included. When the desk is closed the top has some marks/stains– I have not tried to clean these marks/stains. Key is included; unknown if this is the actual or original key. The key does work but at times it is difficult to unlock– I would not recommend locking the desk. Antique Travel Walnut ? Wooden Writing Lap Field Stationary Portable Desk Box
Antique Portable Travel Writing Lap Desk with bun feet. This piece was purchased at an estate sale in the Washington DC area. Desk measures approx. 17" long x 9 deep x 14" tall. There are several compartments and drawers. The drawers are all hand dovetailed. Front and back sides. There are the 2 hidden compartments that come out, but look as though they are stationery columns. My guess is that the brass hardware is original. The finish may not be original. The wood may be walnut, not sure though. There are some nicks, surface scratches and signs of aging, all of which I consider age appropriate wear. A little bit of veneer damage, some stress cracks(some are natural in the wood) and inside has some slight warping. There is no key. I love this piece but have nowhere to display it in my home. Victorian American Civil War Lap Desk Wooden Ornate Brass Hinges ca 1860 Up for Auction is this Antique Civil War wooden writing laptop desk. It has all brass hardware and is quite ornate. It shows some age and was used. It dates ca. 1860. It has a purple velvet lining that is ORIGINAL. It has two ink well compartments a pen compartment and two large paper compartments. I did not find the secret compartment with the gold coins hidden yet. Maybe you can find it? This is an American made desk not English. It has two ink bottles that are very old. They do not match each other but they look like period pieces. The key for the brass lock was lost long ago. The ONLY replacement part is the handle for the cover of the pen compartment. It looks like a push pin. Everything else is original. Included are three quill pens. I only pictured one. The outside ... moreof the box shows wear on the veneer on one side. The large brass hinges and lock add such masculine beauty. This is a real handsome lap desk. MEASURMENTS ARE: 17" BY 12” Overall condition is very good. It does show its age in places where it was well used. It was well made and is still firmly sturdy and durable. I have seen very similar lap desks sell for over $500 right here on ebay.
