Additional storage is found below the desk area consisting of an area with a ornate door measuring 20" x 14 1\2" deep. The drawer below this storage area measures 2" x 14 1\2" deep x 5" High. To the left of the desk is a tall shelf area with four adjustable shelves for storage or acting as a bookcase again having fine ornate wood carving over the glass door front. The ornate carvings on the front of the fold-down desk and upper glass door appear Victorian. Work is needed for refinishing this piece to bring it back to its original beauty. Some wooden back pieces shown in front. Need to be fixed to the back of the desk area and one more missing piece to make the back complete. Overall measurements: 63 ½” high 42 3\4" Wide 14 ½” deep The carved decorative top piece laying in front is shaped to hold a mirror which fits between the pieces and sits on the top of the desk area. The Hardware and wooden casters are original. All hardware appears to be brass. It is missing one wooden caster from one of the legs. Everything on the piece is original. The three adjustable shelves each measure 9” in depth and 41 ¼” in width. This is truly one of the most beautiful Victorian Secretaries of its kind that we have had the privilege to offer. You will notice that there is some faint writing on the back of the piece(see the e-Bay photo) that probably indicates either the maker or the person for whom the piece was made. From what we can see it is signed M. Hall, Hannibal, MO. The details on this Secretary are absolutely wonderful! This beautiful Secretary is constructed of mahogany. And flame mahogany over a secondary wood and the details are exquisite! The bookcase top is graced with a beautiful open arch top with a lovely center foliate carved pedestal that is surrounded on each side with elegant applied scroll land leaf adornments. The bookcase top doors have wavy glass that appears to be original. And three adjustable shelves. The doors have arched tops with picture frame moulding around the original glass and carved foliate escutcheons. The right door has an intact lock and a decorative(non-working) key is included to assist in opening the doors. Also. You will note that there is a small, insignificant scratch on glass in the lower corner of the right door which in no way impacts the beauty or integrity of the original wavy glass. It is hand hewn solid wood, very thick for todays standards. It was manufactured by the George M. Hammer Co. Ltd. in Strand London in the late 1800's or possibly the VERY early 1900's. They were builders of church and school furniture in England. It still has the brass ink well cover as shown in the pictures and also still has the porcelain casters. The desk part slide in and out for comfort and fit. The bas is 34" long, 11" wide in the front and 14" wide in the back. The desk section measures 22" long, 19" wide, 10" tall in the back and 6" tall in the front. It is 38" tall in the back. It is missing one small wood brace as shown in the pictures. I have had a lot of school desks over the years but this is by far the most unique and rare I have ever found.
