Today you can go anywhere in the entire world within 24 hours by plane. Just think way back when before commercial airlines. People traveled primarily by railroad or by ship. Traveling was long, hard, and exhausting. People would literally live out of these trunks as they traveled for weeks and sometimes months on end. Thus. They were built with quality and built to last, which is why they have stood the test of time! The craftsmanship that went into the construction and design of theses ole’ trunks are truly nothing short of spectacular. I recently discovered this wardrobe trunk buried in the rafters in the attic of a local farm house estate in a in nearby town. It stopped me dead in tracks and I had to literally pick my jaw up off the floor! There was no way I was leaving without this trunk. And lucky for me I had hubby to carry it out of the attic and down 3 flits of stairs! And now for the decription… This is a nice authentic period Wardrobe steamer trunk. It is signed on the exterior by the maker Oshkosh Trunk Company. I am unsure of the exact age. But it was clearly left where I had found it for a very very long time. If I had to guestimate I would say it is likely from the early 20 th century. It measures 40 x 22 x 20 inches and weighs 75 pounds respectfully. The exterior is covered with what appears to be a volcanized material with dozens of original brass. Nails, knobs Hinges, Lock and hardware. The lock comes with key and functions as designed. On the interior right side. The trunk has 5 wood drawers with original deco drawer pulls and covered in swanky antique fabric. What's so cool about this ... morewardrobe trunk is that it has features that so many of the other wardrobes you see don't have or they're missing! Also. It was restored approximately 20 years ago and is still in good condition. You may want to repaint or reline the trunk to make it your own, but you don't have to worry about a bunch of repairs because they were already done. For example, the metal trim was not brass and so it was painted. It could easily be repainted to suit your needs. As for the unique, original features, the trunk includes: a wooden ironing board, metal bracket for iron, a pull out holder for the ironing board, 6 wooden hangers- one of which holds a cloth laundry bag, a removeable wooden box(holds shoes.lap desk? and 4 drawers- among other features. It's missing the outside lock and original leather handle(handle was replaced with a strong leather buckled handle) The key to the inside lock, the narrow flat bar that slides in front of the drawers, and some material behind the drawers. Some of the material is faded. The hinges and drawer pulls are secure and in functional condition except one outside latch(this doesn't prevent the trunk from closing tightly. The metal rods that hold the hangers extend out to hold the ironing board and are easy to slide in/out. All the drawers are lined with material and are in good/clean condition. The top drawer is divided into three compartments and is in good condition. The two middle drawers are in good condition too. The bottom drawer is deep and has a shallow pull out tray which exposes a cool feature. The feature is a sphere shaped cloth form that straps to the side of the drawer with leather. The original leather is still in place and functional. But somewhat brittle. My guess is that a hat could be pinned to the form to keep it safe for travel. Has a fabric cloth to cover the clothes from the drawers. This is a large heavy truck, but in pretty good shape for it's age and the number of trips it has taken over the years. The top(picture 6) shows the rip in the fabric. Has two tags on it. First is the Hartman Trunk co, Racine, WI. The other is on the corner and says Wasseman's, Grand Rapids, MI. Rare Hartmann Vintage Stateroom Antique Travel Steamer Trunk Wardrobe Chest
Characteristics of Hartmann We are offering for sale an extremely RARE& UNIQUE fine stateroom steamer trunk. Came from an older Central Pennsylvania estate. Trunk has previous owners initials H L B. Exact age and origin unknown but believe to be from the early 1900s. 1877: Hartmann Inc. was founded in Milwaukee. Wisconsin by Bavarian Trunk maker, Joseph S. Hartmann. 1905: Mr. Hartmann had a vision to build"luggage so fine it will stand as a symbol of excellence. Because of his vision. The company grew rapidly and moved to larger facilities in Racine, Wisconsin. This trunk has early Hartmann trademark cloverleaf hardware. Pull out hanger is patented March 1905. This may be the only one is existence. VERY RARE Quality constructed. Trunk interior is fitted with American golden oak and cast brass ornate pulls with drop front hat box ... morearea that can be used as a desk. Exterior is fitted with rose and silver colored cloverleaf hardware(corners are cast iron and the rest of the hardware is nickel plated brass? which I believe the cloverleaf hardware was characteristic of early Hartmann. Canvas appears to have been a deep mahogany that has darkened over the years from the smoke of coal fired trains and ocean liners. Nice shaped edging of wild boar hide(pig skin) and fine brass tacking. The skin from a boar was tougher and thicker than other animals. Pull out hanger is patented March 1905. This is an antique pre war Oshkosh Steamer"The Chief" wardrobe Trunk with 2 fold out shelves. A case and its original key. It also has a plastic Rite-On chart sleeve made by Aljon Company. I am told that it was owned by Diane Strawbridge Wister of Bryn Mawr PA of the Cambell's soup family. When closed it is approximately 42" tall, 22 1/4" wide and 25" deep. It is in good condition considering its age, but the back has some water damage and there is some rust, the cover on one of the fold out shelves is not attached, but it does close and the shelf wood has some small chips at the back. All the drawers and original pulls, a special shoebox insert in the bottom drawer(which has the only damage to report which is detailed in our last picture) the original laundry/garment drawstring bag(almost impossible to find these days) it also has two drawer dividers in the very top drawer, the original Belber instruction manual, also included is the lock down metal mechanism for the left side of the chest, but no key. It is clearly marked Belber and the outside is in very good condition. It does have some dings and scratches that are consistent with its"worldly travels" There is a metal plaque on it that states patent dates from Feb.13, 1907- Aug. 21, 1928. My research shows that Adam Cappel had an umbrella factory in Dayton Ohio and was in the luggage business. At this point I'm unclear whether he made luggage at the factory or simply sold it in the retail stores. It does have many of the characteristics of the Schmidt manufacturers in Oshkosh. Either way. You're looking at a really cool antique steamer trunk from the early 1900s by Innovation. This really reminds me of the scene from the Harry Potter movies where Professor Lupin has been fired and is magically packing up his trunk to leave Hogwarts! There are 5 drawers on the left side. The top one is divided into 3 separate compartments. All have intact leather pulls. The right side features a set of wooden hangers that swing out for easy access to all your clothes plus two more small shelves for hanging trousers or locking larger items into the lower portion of the trunk. The outside is nearly indestructible. Being covered in metal. It looks like someone spilled some white paint on it at some point. The hinges are intact, and the main latches are functional, although the secondary ones are damaged. Up for bid is this awesome vintage steamer trunk. This amazing wardrobe-style chest normally stands upright on rollers and is pulled by a single handle on the top. The trunk is intended to travel on its wheels. But it also sits nicely on its side if desired. Once opened. The trunk reveals four drawers of varying sizes on one side. On the other side, a drape hangs over a small closet. A covered small suitcase box holds wooden hangers to be used in the closet- it fits into place to make a storage space at the bottom of the closet area. The top of the closet opens up. See pics. The interior of the trunk is all nicely lined. Including the drawers. The interior hardware and hangers are intact. There is a lock on the top drawer, I do not see a key for it, although the exterior lock on the trunk comes with its key. Based on the information on the ... moreexterior lock hardware. It was made by the Eagle Lock Company, Terryville, Conn USA, no. 56K12. I could find no other manufacturer identifiers on the trunk. The leather handle on the trunk is stamped with the number 16. As described in condition case in good overall condition for being around 100 years old and is surprisingly complete. It even has the wooden hangers and removable suitcase. Early Vintage Travelling Storage Wardrobe Steamer Trunk dates back to about 1910. 42" tall X 23" wide and deep. Cured genuine leather stretched over a sold wood frame. Yellow in color with a nice patina. All edges and corners protected by brass plating. There are 6 functioning ball type wheels on the bottom which allows the user to roll the trunk while flat. And an additional 2 functioning wheels allow the user to roll the trunk while standing on end and towing with the leather handle(picture shown) All metal edges do have some wear but this gives the trunk a great look. The locking hardware is functioning. And is stamped EXCELSIOR#4230 Made in Stamford, Conn USA. Excelsior began making this lock in 1910. The locking mechanism is controlled by the exterior latch which in turn stabilizes the drawers for travel(shown in picture) There ... moreis 1 key from the Independent Lock Co#1076 Made in Fitchburg. Mass USA(valued at $18.95 on Ebay) The interior fabric is a copper monochromatic damask which is in good shape considering the age(picture shown) Once settled at their destination. The traveller may lift the padded top portion of the trunk up using the attached hinges to reveal and unlock the hanging garments(see main picture) There are 5 drawers which feature the same copper damask on their fronts. And brown lining within(picture shown) The top drawer is missing the lock, the bottom drawer is missing the handle, and both drawers do have a little water damage. There are 4 original hangers(1 shirt. 1 pant, and 2 coat) These hangers rest upon a chrome bar which extends outward 18" to allow the traveller to peruse their garments and avoid wrinkling. The hanging garments are protected from dust during travel by a copper damask curtain that snaps closed at the bottom. Approximated weight is 85 lbs. This is a totally retro early 20th century wardrobe trunk. Which makes a perfect coffee table. It measures about 40" x 22" including the handle) and is about 15" deep when closed. I'll mostly let the pictures do the talking, but you can see how sturdy it is, and it comes with four drawers on the right side and room to hang your clothes and store your valuables and toiletries on the left. The manufacturer's diamond-shaped tag says"Dependo, Petersburg, Virginia" in the center; Independent Trunk& Bag Company" across the top; and"Dependable Luggage" along the bottom. It is in used and worn condition. Both inside and out, and, more specifically, it has the initials"H.M.M. in red paint on one end; the carrying handle is missing(from the same end) and the lock has been busted off. The lock ... moreis included, but separated and stuck in the closed position. It is numbered"912" and marked"Akinson& Long Mfg. Co. Everlasting Lock, New York, NY. We don't have the key for it, in case you hadn't already guessed. Because our trusty bathroom scale tells us it weighs more than the postal limit of 70 pounds. There is a series of latches and joining hardware on the front. The lock is not functional and is bent a little(looks like it was pried open) The latches are all in good working condition. The trunk is very solid and is not cracked or damaged. The outside top leather handle is also in very good condition. This Hartmann wardrobe trunk is in great original condition given it's age(believed to be 1930's) This is a large trunk- overall dimensions are 22" x 22" x 41" These are the things I am amazed at regarding the trunk: 1. Everything is there including TWO original keys to open the trunk and TWO original keys for the drawer locking mechanism. 2. Original labels in excellent condition 3. Under the bottom drawer is the original patent label- looks brand new still 4. No missing rivets 5. All hinges are original and solid 6. The trunk closes completely flush all the way around 7. A large wardrobe trunk made by Henry Likly of Rochester. N.Y. established 1844. Extremely well made. And equipped with beautiful oak slats and ball castors on the bottom end. This fine trunk is complete. Fully functional, and in excellent vintage condition. It is signed with a brass plaque outside and a paper label inside. It is ink stamped Patented December 12. 1911. It comes with the original key. This rare American trunk was beautifully made in the same style of the famous much more expensive ones. It measures 46" x 23" x 25" The same or better quality as the French examples. I recommend Uship or Plycon for shipping from postal code 13066. Weight about 125 lbs.

Wardrobe steamer trunk (made by Corbin lock co.)
This is a nice old wardrobe steam trunk. There are no dents on any of the exterior metal straps. Brass, etc. Leather has some age cracks and is a beige color. The only interior concerns are that the laundry/wardrobe bag is missing, half of hinge on shoe box missing, some separation on lower drawer(just needs a staple or two, which I'd prefer to let buyer do, as I don't want to ruin any patina) Interior has some water damage a some small tears in fabric, but in really good shape for it's age, just needs a little clean up. Trunk measures approximately 14 1/2" deep, 22 1/4" wide, and 41" long. Similar chests listed for $ 250.00 and up. We are listing for a very reasonable price.
