This chest measures 48 inches wide by 18 inches deep by 17 inches high. When opened. You are greeted with the fresh scent of natural cedar as a shelf rises up and away for easy access to the chest below. Based on the serial number. The manufacture date was April 21, 1954. I received the chest in the early-to-mid 70s and had it professionally refinished with a walnut stain in 1979. Some of the grain is slightly raised on the front(as seen in the picture) Several pictures were taken under different lighting conditions. There are a few very minor scratches. But overall it is in very good condition. IMPORTANT: As per the requirements of the Consumer Products Safety Commission. A new replacement lock has been obtained from The Lane Company and the original pushbutton removed. This item comes from a smoke-free. Beautiful Rare 1927 Antique Lane Cedar Hope Blanket Chest Style# 48910 This Lane Hope Chest was made on May. 9th 1927 In 1912 John Edward Lane bought a small packing-box plant in Altavista. Virginia at a bankruptcy auction for $500. Placed in charge of the small, corrugated iron building, his son Edward Hudson Lane decided to convert the facility in order to make cedar chests. The Lane family was unsure of what success they would have selling chests, so they originally named the company The Standard Red Cedar Chest Co. The firm manufactured and sold chests used to store linens and other items for setting up housekeeping, as well as keepsakes. Early production of about ten chests a day was sold through independent salesmen working on commission. In its early days. The business was run on a shoestring budget. Nearby buildings were rented as ... moredemand grew, with finished parts transferred from one building to another by means of a mule-drawn carriage. Ed Lane later recalled he was"one jump ahead of the sheriff most of the time. When a banker told him the company was insolvent, Lane asked him what that meant. STUNNING ANTIQUE 1926 ROOS CEDAR HOPE CHEST! The Ed Roos Company. Based in Forest Park, IL, was in business from 1916-1951 and made chests in popular styles from Edwardian to Art Deco. Featuring double locks and two levels. This beautiful Hope Chest is multi-functional and a great collectors piece! The first shelf has four felt compartments including one large area that you can strap down a blanket or anything really! The largest compartment under the first shelf is lined with thick paper with holes. This method is used to protect both the cedar and any items stored. Articles and cloths along with other items can stick to the cedar and possibly ruin both. The lining helps the cedar breath. And keeps items from attaching to the wood. Solid wood construction with decorative patterned veneer. Original finish. The cedar scent is still very strong. The lid opens by depressing the latch on the outside. the handles are missing. but it's not really going to be used to hold stuff anyway look carefully at the images. I'm sure you know some. or about all of the people inside. would certainly make an interesting centerpiece. maybe cut some glass or plexiglass to fit inside as a table, then close the lid and use the top as a table when kids come over the cutouts inside are old. some are ripped. I have up for sale a very nice vintage original circa 1920s- 40s Cedar Chest. The chest is in very clean original condition! It measures approx 45-1/4" long. 20" deep, approx 19-1/2" tall which includes the 1" castor height. The chest is in Excellent Condition- nice clean original finish- strong& sturdy- has a flat top which would be strong enough to sit on- that is unless you are over 300 lbs then I would not advise it. Some normal light age wear as one would expect. The only damage to note is a fairly inconspicuous chip/ slivered off piece- located on the front lower right. Shown up close in pics 10& 12. This is not something that is very noticeable at all, the sliver was done many years back and it has been stained over and the only way you will notice it, is if you look upclose with scrutiny. There is some ... moreslight wear to the metal bands, but its very light- nothing serious. The hinge works perfectly and the little metal elbow for holding the top up, when opened,works just fine. I do not have the key for the lock and not sure if the lock works. Vintage Moderoma "Modern Hope Chest" with Tray
This is a beautiful chest dubbed the"Modern Hope Chest" for its day by the Franklin Shockey Company in North Carolina. I believe it was made in the 50's. As you can see from the photo the wood is beautifully done. I have seen one other but it did not have the shelf. They are designed to be waterproof and have a small compartment in the middle of the shelf for mothballs or other moth deterants. The interior is pristine and looks like it was never or barely used. The exterior is in great condition for its age with just a few nicks and one small piece of the stripe veneer missing. The trunk is 3' 5" long and 1' 4" wide. It stands 20" tall and 17" deep. Lovely. Vintage, Late 1940's or early 1950's, Lane Cedar Hope Chest. Chest measures approximately 47-1/4" wide, 22-3/4" tall and 18-1/2" in depth. The Chest is in the Art Deco Style. There is a top self which is divided in two parts with original green felt liner. The chest has the original paperwork included. The locks were repaired with a safety lock in September, 2013. New key and instruction sheet included. The underside of the chest has style number 2231, and serial# 846230. The inside of the chest is in good condition. The outside of the chest shows signs of age and has some scratches and wear, from being relocated a few times, but is in good condition for its age. The three rear hinges open and close well.
