Condition: Seller refurbished Location: Tacoma, United States Guess what? I took apart a Lane Cedar Chest once only to find out that it was not really cedar chest at all. What it revealed itself to be was certainly ... moreenlightening. For concealed between a thin layer of cedar veneer. An even thinner layer of decorative fascia veneer, and a 3/4" thick top strip of cedar running horizontally along the edge was in fact a huge sheet of PARTICLE BOARD! Prior to this rather cleverly deceitful method of increasing a company's profit with the use of inferior material under the guise of quality woods. There used to be a disclaimer attached to such pieces as this LANE'VIRGINIA MAID' CEDAR CHEST This disclaimer identifies the products used in the construction of furniture. And on the inside of the lid it says: 70% MADE OF 3/4" RED CEDAR PANELS(JUNIPERUS VIRGINIANA) So this isn't one of those particle board pieces. It is almost all solid wood except the veneers on the front and top, and the decorative base. ART DECO STYLE The blotchy areas are just where varnish remains-almost all of the varnish has totally disappeared. Leaving a raw piece with just those blotchy areas mentioned-the piece is almost immaculate condition otherwise. SIZE: 48" in width x 19" in depth x 18 1/2" in height VERY NICE ANTIQUE CONDITION no gouges. Lane Furniture was founded in 1912 by Edward Hudson Lane in Altavista. Virginia. The company has always made chests and boxes, and for many years its mainstay was well-made cedar"hope chests" designed for storage of clothes and household goods. During the First World War, the company also supplied pine ammunition boxes to the government, and after the war was able to apply these mass-production methods to the manufacture of its cedar chests. Helped by aggressive advertising campaigns, the company's chests began to sell all over the United States. In later years, Lane expanded to produce other kinds of furniture, but its cedar chests are still the ... moremost emblematic of its products. Because the chests were mass-produced throughout the 20th century and are thus quite common, only older examples tend to fetch high prices at auction. Beautiful. Well taken care of"hope chest. Made by Lane. From what I can gather, it was made in 1994. Fabric top with no stains, rips or markings. All wood is sound and in good construction. It has a key and all lock mechanisms are functioning. 44x14.75x19. All measurements take into account the cushion on top. It's a well loved piece that I'm happy to give to a new home!
